You're gonna see this with any sort of boxy, upright windshield. I thought about getting a Toyota FJ cruiser from the early 2000s at one point, or one of the newer land Rover defenders on the used market. Both those both have a huge amount of stories regarding cracked windshields. The Land Rover is the worst because the windshield is apparently acoustic and heated, so to replace one of those is apparently about $1,500.

I am curious how many people use a windshield sun shade and have had a windshield crack. I am careful not to follow too close or to get behind big trucks, but my windshield took a direct hit from a big rock and it didn't crack, just left a small mark that could only be seen when washing the car. I felt lucky it didn't hit my paint. Then months later, I wasn't sure if I got hit again, but windshield was fine when I left and fine when I got back and it was a warm day so I put up the windshield sun shade and later came back to a big horizontal crack from the edge. And it was nowhere near where my old small impact mark was. So I am curious if the black fritting edge of the windshield heats up from the inside thanks to the sun shade and expands more than the rest and cracks the glass. It was the sun shade that is made for the Maverick and fits right against the glass, it is the hoop type and not the accordion type.

I use sunshade. No problems. I'd say that we get hot here. I don't know how much harder it is where you are.
The chip in my windshield came while driving it.

I have this type of sun shade that may create more of a solar oven being close to the glass with no air gaps. A lot of these cracks start from the edge and in toward the center of the windshield, so it had me wondering about the black edge frit if the sun shade went all the way into every corner.

What kind of heat did you have.
Were you hotter than 120°?
And we weren't as hot as Phoenix
There is still some ventilation at the top where it goes around the mirror.

I also believe that your sun shade is a material that you can twist down into a circle as pictured for storage? It's purpose is to block the UV rays. The material will breathe.
But, I don't think it had anything to do with it.
Windshield mounting is different than it was in the old days where there was a big black rubber gasket.
Today's windshield adhesives do Flex to compensate for expansion and contraction of the glass.
If you're looking for a professional opinion stop at Safelite or an auto glass business and ask an installer for their opinion.

I’ve got one small chip and now a big hole in my windshield. Sounded like I get hit by a ball bearing, it was very loud! I need to contact my insurance company and see what they want to do about it. Ugh.😑

A friend with a 24 Wrangler just had his cracked today. A piece of metal blew off a scrap truck. $2,500 windshield, but he has to pay $50.

You need to distinguish between design affecting probability of a crack/chip and bad luck. Unfortunately, a sample size of two cracked windshields is way too small to draw any inference.

I am wondering if this happens more based on road conditions. Our roads in general in Florida are in pretty good shape so only occasionally have had rocks thrown up my truck. No breaks for me. I also try to keep a good distance from the vehicle in front of me just in case.

Ive been driving 25 years and in the 2 years I’ve had my maverick I’ve had more windshield cracks then the previous 23 years. I’m on my 2nd windshield but the first one had 2 repairs before I replaced it. I finally had to replace it because I got another crack on a road trip and couldn’t get it repaired in time before it spread. Now on my 2nd windshield I have 2 repairs which luckily I was able to repair before they spread.
I even bought the hood deflector which hasn’t done anything to help.
What is it about this vehicle that attracts rocks?
Totally feel your pain !!! I completely agree with you.

Unfortunately I think it's just bad luck.
