I've had two Dee-Zees. The current one is over two years old and is working perfectly. Whether you need it is entirely up to you. If you like things to accidentally bang down, (as the tailgate will if you don't hang on to it) you'll be fine. When other people "help" they don't always think to let the gate down gently. Been there with older trucks.
The tailgate isn't heavy and you can easily lower it. I don't use the tailgate tiedown that has to be removed because I never drive with the gate down. The camera isn't useful when it is down and I like to use it (and my mirrors) as a bent tailgate from backing into something is not fun.
I see it as a positive enhancement but the haters have made their point. Guess that is the way things are now.

I like mine. NO problems in 6 months. $18 on amazon. One of the cheap ones with over 7000 ratings averaging 4.3 stars. Not sure where the proof is the Chinese made DeeZee is any better quality? Can anyone back up their claim? ✌

I have forgotten about this mod since it seems like it should have been there from the factory after I installed it. I have no real need but it was a want.

Anyone noticed the screw starting to rust? What is the best way to address this?
Remove, clean and paint with a good rust proof paint??

They are great in spring, summer, and fall but absolutely suck in winter if your temp drops below zero

The tailgate assist that I bought was one of the cheaper noname ones off Amazon. Two years in and no problems other than its fasteners rusting (aargh).
If it makes you feel any better, every single OEM black fastener I've ever touched in that bed is now rusting. The simple act of unbolting/refastening apparently damages the coating enough to leave the metal unprotected. Then the Torx bolts retain water in the head. Yay.

Anyone noticed the screw starting to rust? What is the best way to address this?
If I had to do it over again, I'd maybe use a smaller Torx bit wrapped in tape, and also touch up any heads I worked with black paint I guess.

I like mine, other than the slow winter performance lol. Pushing it down makes it go a bit faster at least. Plus it drops unassisted at the very beginning before the shock starts to work. I read somewhere you can flip it around to help with that but meh

Sandi.
Me personally YES. Proof is in the video.
Tailgate with soft open damper strut.👍🏻👍🏻

It is a great upgrade convenience for around $30
It's especially convenient if your hands are full and you don't want to set anything down you can use one finger to pull the latch and let it go, as my video shows. ☝🏻☝🏻
It eliminates any chance of the tailgate slipping from your hand and slamming down. I have a 2023 and installed it the first month I owned the truck.

Tailgate Slamming and bouncing Without the damper strut.😯

Thank you! Ordered one and floor mats from Rough Country. Still deciding about cover and bed mat. I have a spray in liner, but probably could use a bed mat to move things easier.

Installed mine today after its been sitting on my workbench for ~6 months. I bought the Arana version from Amazon. Took maybe 10 minutes from start to finish. I opened and closed my tailgate a couple times and it seemed to work pretty well. I will report back if problems start to arise.

I can manually open it with ease, I don’t need the help BUT !
I want one so my tailgate doesn’t bounce when open and I hit a bump.
My Terra Trike Rambler AT is not heavy enough to hold it down.

The DeeZee one I can attest to. I've had it on my truck for two and a half years and I have not noticed any degradation in performance. In fact, the other day when it was really cold, I could have done a lap around my truck in the amount of time it took to come down.
" a lap around the truck" LMAO............they do tend to lower SUPER SLOW when the temp is cold,

That was the first mod I did on mine and absolutely love it. You just open the door handle and walk away. Very smooth operation. The best investment for a Maverick.
