So I have had my 2.0L ecoboost AWD Maverick for almost 6 months now and in that time I've kept it in normal mode. Just for kicks recently I put it into Sport mode. Ugghh. To me it is very much unusable to the point I am wondering if something is wrong with either the programming or the transmission. I know that modes are electronic and not mechanical and the computer is just changing shift points and the timing of such. Sport mode on the Maverick as on other manufacturers that use it, holds the revs longer, and higher it seems. On my Maverick, the problem is is that it seems to hold high revs TOO long or when it shouldn't. Yesterday in Sport mode it was doing like 2500 RPMs at 40 mph. Seems a bit high to me since our Mavericks are high geared and are doing under 1800 RPM's at 60 mph in Normal mode. When I come up to a stoplight/stop sign in Sport mode, it holds the RPM's way too high when to me it should be lowering them since I am coming up to a stop. It's like someone in a manual that downshifts into 1st gear when coming up to a stop before they should and the engine is revving in too high an RPM. Just doesn't seem like it is behaving right or is this how Sport mode is supposed to behave in people that have used it regularly in thier Mavericks? If so, it is terrible IMO.

I concur. Sport mode in EB AWD is monstrous. Too much power. Feels like the car just wanna run away from you. I don’t feel the car is ā€˜controlled’ in sport mode with EB compared to hybrid.
Sounds pretty entertaining, glad they had fun with it. How was it in the hybrid?

Sport mode will hold the revs high when braking because engine braking and also If you want to get back on it(gas) its in the sweet spot of the torque band. Plus since your an ecoboost it will keep the turbo spooled for a more linear response. As a sports car driver(always manual with sports cars) you want to keep the revs high as that where the power band is.

I have had my Mav for 5 months and 5k miles. I accidentally put it in sport mode for about six blocks and two stop lights. My wife was panicking and kept saying: What is wrong with the truck??" I took me a bit to figure out what was "wrong". Just saw the initial red on my display and thought the engine had a mind of its own. :) Other than a one time, on purpose, for a 0 to 70 test, it has not been used. No plans or need for future use. Whatever floats your boat........

The different modes do a couple of different things.
1. it remaps the throttle response
2. remaps the transmission for quicker shift and holds gears longer

On the EB it does not give more boost in Sport v normal.

I can't believe people are complaining that the truck has too much power.

The 8F35 in the Maverick has computer controlled adaptive learning, meaning it will learn your driving habits and adjust things like shift points accordingly. I had the same thoughts at first but the more I use it the better it gets, holding gears for a more reasonable duration. Give it some more time and see if it makes a difference. FWIW I actually prefer using sport mode for driving around town since it holds a more appropriate gear for low speed driving.

I drove from Iowa to NC with the VB ecoboost. Each mode has its use:
Normal and Eco modes were great through the rolling hills of the Midwest; Sport mode was great on the curvy mountain and valley expressways of West Virginia. In Virginia normal mode seemed like a perfect mix for changeable terrain, and rolling into the NC piedmont region, Eco mode suited the highway. Around town, Normal/Eco modes are used; I like Eco Mode best…seems appropriate with softer programmed throttle response, given stop-n-go stoplight and vehicle congestion.

Also, it’s best to experiment with different modes when alone, or you’ll get yelled at for good reason. Yeah, learned that lesson the loud way.

I made a point to try all modes on my ECOboost on my way home from dealer 1st day. They all work great. Took the Looong way home through the local mountains with a lot of twisties. Mine mostly sits in the carport right now with Grand Cherokee being preferred DD in all this Winter weather we're having, but when it does get out, I always set for Sport mode. I love the kick in the pants, put you back in your seat feeling as it reminds me a lot of power delivery in my motorcycles. Kind of a poor man's "Muscle car". With the low seating position and AWD this thing handles like a go-kart and I love it!

Sport mode does keep the rpm’s high but ever since id install the Race Chip in my AWD with the towing option ( better cooling and differential ratio) sport mode under level 7 of the Race Chip is perfect!! The rpm’s are lower and better performance overall ( 40 hp + 50 ft/lbs added) I’ll admit the first time under level 7 at sport mode , I was scared to death and I thought I was going to fast. Now I’m use to it and wanting more performance!!

I know this is mostly about the EcoBoost but I'll note how my 2.0 escape worked, and maybe a quick insight at how the hybrid works in sport mode as well.

I agree with the above poster that the sport mode generally is more hesitant to upshift (I had a 6f35 on my model, which basically only has 1 less non-overdrive gear, if you look at the ratios compared to the 8f35). It keeps the revs up for increased braking in hilly areas and for having available power out of cornering. It would hold the revs for a few seconds and then decide to upshift on it's own.

The hybrid sport mode definitely idles the engine at a higher rpm. It keeps the HVB fully charged at all times. It does have fake shifts unless you use full throttle. You lose about 10mpg in this mode unless you are at highway speeds and there its pretty comparable.

I get the feeling that a lot of people here would not appreciate plaid mode on a Tesla. Under no circumstances is even the most tooled up Maverick eco-boost in any way of a fast or dangerous truck. It’s actually kind of a dog but a nice dog. You’re not going to win a greenlight challenge in any of the models, unless you have some compromised vehicles against you.

plaid is $115,000+… everything is relative. It absolutely is fast for a starting $22k.

The OP doesn't understand what sport mode is for, it is not intended to be used for normal driving, if you want maximum acceleration at any given speed or from a stop this is what it's for. The only time I use it is on an on ramp to the interstate or the one time I went to the dragstrip.
