For the first time today I put my Hybrid in Sport mode. It shifted 5 times until I reached my speed, being as it is a planetary CVT it must be simulated. Any thoughts.

That is pretty cool. I put it in Sport so the motor would run more for heat in extremely cold weather. It was a lot more fun to drive, but still had good gas mileage.

While in general no person needs to shift in motion, these are all "drive by wire" for one, and the computer won't let you do a bonehead move. And SECOND there is zero shifting. And third, there is no belts pulleys or chains.

Lastly, you CAN shift while the vehicle is in motion. You CAN shift to R while going forward at 75 mph. Nothing happens. It ignores your command and a message pops up "conditions not ready for shift". If you do it at 5 mph the truck makes a smooth, seemless, harmless transition.

The one "bad" thing you can do is go to P at under 3mph.

Above 3 mph you can't shift to park. It ignores you again. But under 3 mph but rolling it will.

Having another truck with a manual trans, I nearly always turn off and pull the key, unfasten seatbelt and switch off the headlights just prior to a full stop. This habit developed due to a pizza delivery job during high school.
Today I reverted to the same habit inadvertently in the hybrid and found the transmission goes into park when the key is pulled. Will have to break this habit.

Ok, thanks for the info. Good to know more about these highly technological tranny. Have a good day. And to others.

My 22 ecoboost has genuine shift points and 250hp so "sport" mode isn't required. It's always there and the mileage is decent too. Just sayin'

I’ve seen the video. And history about this eCVT drive. I could only assume the actual CVT drive has that metal chain on two movable V grooved sheaves.
No chain, Ford's are a Planatary CVT

The eCVT is not mechanically related in the least to a chain and sheaves CVT. In fact it really couldn't be more different.
The eCVT is essentially a planetary gear set being driven by the ICE, with a 2nd small electric motor attached to the outer ring gear (this isn't the main electric drive motor). By spinning the ring gear (software controlled), the effective gear ratio of the planetary gear set is changed. The output of the planetary gearset and the main electric motor both drive the main output gear that drives the axles. Literally under 20 moving parts, where as a regular transmission has hundreds.
Sport mode does include fake shift points, where it will hold a specific "gear ratio" for a while. It also changes the mapping of the accelerator pedal to be more sensitive. If you're driving in eco mode and swap the tranny i to sport mode, you'll immediately accelerate quite a bit.

Late reply, but yes it's simulated.
At least part of the reason for that goes back to mechanical (cones and belt) CVTs. They feel and sound really strange, almost like there is a rubber band in the middle of the drive train. (This is because being partly mechanical they cant respond as quickly, while the eCVT changes ratio entirely electrically so it responds instantaneously.)
The original CVTs felt so weird -uncomfortable even- that they had to put in fake gears (by holding at a specific ratio for a bit) so they feel just like a normal automatic. (Even then they were initially horrible, though they're better now.)
But on the eCVT it is possible to actually keep the engine RPM almost perfectly static (and efficient) even as the vehicle accelerates, and while that does sound *different* than a regular car, it doesn't sound nearly as weird.

i'm curious as to what your typical preferred driving mode has been so far nd what if any differences as in MPG and such? i'm a 95% ECO mode guy myself.

35 years in Engineering............... had knowledge of all that, I was just making a subject of interest.

I split between Eco and Slippery up here in Da U.P. averaging 40 Mpg in the colder weather.

I dont care for the pretend shifting. To feel no shift is considered a luxury in a transmission. But we imitate shifting in cvt?

Because the whole drama of the engine revving up, pause, shift, resume acceleration feels fast (even though technically it's wasting time). Ironically it's why some people don't like the modern 700 hp cars that can hit 100 mph without having to shift past 2nd.
