We just had our second Maverick lose power while driving on the Freeway.

First Maverick was a 2022 Maverick (XLT Hybrid Luxury Package w/ 24k miles build date February 2022) that lost power while driving on the freeway. We were fortunate to doge a couple lanes and able to pull off to the side. Shut the vehicle off and turned back on and immediately brought to the dealer to get checked out and caught up on a recall. Dealer performed Three recall services 22b39 relating to loose 12 battery connection, 22E09 Update Powertrain Control Module, 23C41 Turn Signal Outage Detection Failure. Haven't had a loss of power since the service was done in early 2024.

Second Maverick was a 2024 Maverick (XL Hybrid 13k miles Build date of February 2024) that lost power on the freeway, pulled over and heard a loud sound and started smoking. We were fortunate to doge a couple lanes and able to pull off to the side. Turned off the engine and got vehicle towed. Dealer said Code P0301 was the only code that showed up which pertained to cylinder 1. They did a compression test on cylinder 1 and no pressure and found the piston was gone or in pieces...they said they found parts of it in the oil pan. Ford replace the long block assembly with no questions asked.

Any other people with multiple Mavericks have have complete loss of power? These occurrences have spooked us and we are swapping the Mavericks out of our fleet. The major concern is that we have already found two ways to lose power while driving on the freeway across two unique vehicles and there are still other know ways for this to happen out there such as Customer Satisfaction Program 23N06 relating to the long block being replace if engine fails. On our 2022 there were also a couple recalls relating to 'if engine fails' there is an increase of fire due to accumulation of engine oil fuel or vapor Recall 22S47 and Recall 22S27.

We really enjoyed the incredible gas mileage and compact size of the Mavericks but in the end we have decided that Safety is a Priority and the Mavericks need to find a new home.

I seem to recall a few threads way back in the past on the subject, but I think the total loss of power has been fairly rare. No doubt it being a scaring and unnerving experience for the driver/owner, so I can understand your concern and decision. But in the scheme of it all (quantity/frequency wise) I think its so rare overall it doesn't even register percentage wise in the quantity built. I definitely see your point, concern and moving on. I probably would also if I had the same experience. Good luck and hopefully better experiences with your replacement vehicles.

That's unlucky, but your decision sounds like a wild overreaction. It's your choice though ...

In other news, my friend's low mileage 2024 F150 just blew its transmission and left him stranded 1200 miles from home. No vehicle is immune to having a mechanical failure, I'm curious what you plan on buying to replace the Mavericks and how you can be sure they're any better?

There is validity in that for sure. It seems like recalls/problems have plagued practically every auto manufacturer for a while now like a plague. Sadly, Ford seems to stay in the #1 spot :crying:

Nice that Ford fixed it no questions asked. I have a couple questions though - how many miles until your first oil change & did you follow Ford’s recommended engine break in procedure?

Not trying to be a jerk at all - just curious. Modern pistons & rings are designed for abuse. The toughest time is the first miles to 1000.

Yes, Ford was incredibly responsive when it came to getting a tow truck out (had acknowledgment that a tow truck was on it's way within a couple minutes of requesting roadside assistance through the APP. Also, there wasn't much back and forth with the dealer and Ford corporate - it was a quick "were going to replace the entire long block assembly.

The First and only oil Change was at 7500 Miles (Still had 20%+ oil life per oil indicator). Yes, broke the engine in very gently keeping to speed limits, no high revs, varied the throttle, no road trips at same RPM for the first thousand miles.

I should clarify the 2024 that had the engine failure was also a hybrid and not the ecoboost engine.

This is very unfortunate and I definitely understand why you would prefer safety over any mileage advantages. I would say the odds of having one owner with two Mavericks failing power is pretty high.

Thanks for info!
I’m guessing a rare manufacturer defect(?) that Ford took full responsibility for & took great care of you.
Scary & a hassle for you - but you handled it like a Pro it seems!

" fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me " . If it happened once, I agree that it would be an overreaction. Next time you are on the freeway in fast lane (when there aren't any cars around for safety) take your foot off the accelerator for 10 seconds and try to work your way over to the right shoulder pretending the freeway is full of vehicles.

I was considering and F150 for it's replacement...but you talked me out of it. It's a very tough choice at this point because nothing exists in the Maverick space where you can get 37+ MPG average and still have a truck bed. In my case, the 2024 wasn't being used as a truck and I would say a Honda CR-V Hybrid would be a good replacement that has a very proven track record for reliability and excellent fuel efficiency.

If your interested in another small truck you may want to inquire about the 2026 Honda Ridgeline , rumor is it will be updated and available in Hybrid and ICE powertrains but maybe late availability 🤷🏻‍♂️

If one issue with one guy posting about his bad luck in an F150 can "talk you out it it" and instead look at a Honda CR-V Hybrid instead, maybe you should not read this link either...

Have had something similar happen to me (total loss of power) and it is scary as hell. Live appx 50 miles from Boston and was leaving work next to I 95 in rush hour traffic and had just gotten into the left lane when it happened to me. Like you... was able to get into the breakdown lane without causing an accident. How I don't know. Luckily it was not a section of the highway where they allowed travel in the breakdown lane during rush hour. This was a Subaru, known for quality. Walked back to my office (could see the building from where it happened) and called the nearest Subaru dealer (about 15 miles away) and they had a truck to me within 20 min. Was lucky many in many ways... 1st was able to get a loaner for the night (person that had reserved had not shown up), 2nd it was only the timing belt (was no where near the recommend belt change for the vehicle), 3rd no damage to the engine, 4th, car was ready the following day. Never used that dealer prior, but used them pretty much exclusively till I got rid of the vehicle to buy my 1st SUV. Not often you get that kind of service.

Second Maverick to Lose Power on Freeway
Two Maverick's same thing!! Screw that.
I would NOT trust the brand either.
Good luck moving forward with a new vehicle.

Above all stay safe,
