That's not what that says. And Hyundai put it in the 2023 manual too.

And just because a truck can do it once doesn't mean it's designed to do it repeatedly. Hyundai's literature says you shouldn't put more than 661 lbs in the bed, and they could have corrected it for 2023 (they even modified the language to be clear the cargo area is the bed).
you read the whole page they show how to calculate with more or less passengers. I know what it says on the sticker on the side door on my SC and it says 1411 lbs which by the way is the rating they put on both the two wheel drive and the four wheel drive which indicates Hyundai is being cautious with their numbers since anyone knows the four wheel drive outweighs the two wheel drive which means the payload should change if nothing has changed when Hyundai introduced the truck they advertized over 1700 lb payload. Let me add the guy in the video knows a hellva lot more about payload and trucks then folks that can't logically calculate how payload it measured. Look up the carry capacity of the tires and axle of the truck and then pay attention to the weight adjusting rear end that he said did fine and levelled the truck with the weight. If the truck was level, the weight in the bed 1800 lbs it would only make sense to say your interpretation is incorrect. My vehicle has the following numbers....curb weight 3862, Gross Vehicle weight Rating 5611. Use your head...only one way 661 pounds plays is with weight after 5 150 pound passengers...

Hyundai says, in the manual, that the bed cargo should never exceed 661 lbs. It's page 6-67 in the 2023 owners manual.

This is clear. Total payload applies to the entire vehicle, including the passenger compartment. Hyundai is making it very, very clear you cannot put more than 661 lbs in the bed though, regardless of the amount of weight in the rest of the vehicle.

Read the preceding information to the warning which number 1 thru 6 and they tell you clearly how that number was calculated that they used 661. 1411 payload minus 5 passengers at 150 lbs each ( 750 pounds total) and subtract it from the 1411 payload and the number comes up 661 pounds...wow what a coincience...

I've read the whole page. I don't think you understand the context of the warning.

But go ahead and put more in there. If you want to break your Santa Cruz by consistently ignoring the limits clearly listed by the manufacturer, I won't stop you.

Just interested in knowing how many of you would REALLY consider the Santa Cruz as an alternative to the Maverick !! When I look at the Hyundai/Kia line up, IMO, they target Toyota and Honda. Specifically, the Santa Cruz is positioned to compete with the Honda Ridgeline.
How many of you considered the Honda Ridgeline in your decision process ??
Although Maverick, Ridgeline and Santa Cruz “technically“ serve the same market, do they attract the same buyer ?? (ME: No)…
Personally, I was waiting for the new Nissan Frontier when I saw the Maverick release. DONE !!
The way I see it, Ford caught the automobile industry flat footed. I will be interested in seeing how long it will take Toyota to react. I am not sure GM chases the Maverick as they are laser focused on being an all Electric lineup.

Impatiently waiting…
Don't like the suv look of the Santa Cruz. At least the Ridgeline and the Maverick look like a truck. Also, I don't consider the Ridgeline and Maverick competitors, as the Ridgeline is a midsize, and the Maverick is a compact.

Like even if the manual is wrong about it, wouldn't that make it worse? If they're printing inaccurate documentation (even while slightly updating it), why should you trust any of the truck's stats they say?

It's funny how Ford Fanboys can't add 661 and 750 for 5 150 pound passengers and come up with the payload rating of 1411. Here you go at the approximate 5 minute mark and watch the message from Hyundai in the split screen

See, I know that. But then they didn't clarify that in the 2023 manual.

In fact, they made it even more clear that you should only put 661 lbs in the bed.

What that means is that either you can only put 661 lbs in the bed, or Hyundai's documentation team can't be trusted. Neither is a good look -- and in any case no one should be blamed for "spreading misinformation" (which is what this whole discussion was originally about) when it's in Hyundai's documentation.

It was explained but a number of folks on this site wouldn't listen and ignored it. It was explained how they came up with the 661 lbs which aligned with what many of you argued about when it was explained to you . So now there is no argument Hyundai wrote this reviewer and explained it. The Payload is on the door sticker. In my case 1411 pounds payload and I could have it all in the bed sitting in my driveway with no driver or passengers . So there you have it. The bed can take 1411 pound payload on the top model 4WD loaded truck and more on other level models.

Yet they continued to print an UPDATED version of the same warning in the 2023 manual long after that review.

As I said, this discussion started because someone said the source of the misinformation was from "ford fanboys," when it comes from the current documentation supplied by Hyundai. My objection was to someone thinking anyone seeing that warning was at fault for believing it.

Regardless of whether it's true, you should be asking why Hyundai is still printing this warning still long after they've "clarified" it. And your issue should be with Hyundai continuing to put it out there.

If I don't get a Maverick by the end of this year, I'm going to get the Colorado. The one I priced out is only ~5K more than my Maverick order and it's obviously more truck too. I checked out the Frontier at the Cleveland Auto Show and it looked like another good alternative too.
You can have my Maverick when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers… I cussed and fussed while waiting, but I enjoy this truck more than any vehicle I have ever own, including my 68’ Cougar…
