The fluid specced by Ford for the RDU. I don't know what the other options are, mostly because I don't believe this is the place to save money.
Do u trust your dealer to correctly perform the PDU service ? Dunno here. I used to do this every other year on my Element but now I may be too lazy -

Absolutely not. Because here's the razor-blade like piece that's been dangling between the A-pillar plastic and my airbags on both sides for almost a year after the airbag recall. Caught this in December. There are two missing nuts with torque values specified that they did not put back.

In a best case scenario, the airbags would deploy in a way that's not consistent with Ford's engineers' design.

In a worst case scenario, that slices the airbags or me and my passenger.

Ford customer service has yet to find a way to fix this for me.

After this is fixed, my vehicle will never again go back to a dealer short of anything related to important recalls.

Once it's fixed, I'll write up a very scathing review of Ford and its dealer network on here so folks can see how I've been treated.

I was inquiring about the PTU and whether a friction modifier would compromise the specific functionality of the PTU. I highly assume they the RDU does require a friction modifier.

Have you not demanded a complete headliner replacement ?

I want back 4 times to the original dealer due to damage, all in February and March of last year.

When I found out about the issue in December, I got angry and called Ford customer service because I don't trust the original dealer. Truck spent 10 days at another dealership, with 5 of those without having paperwork submitted to Ford.

So now I'm hoping for a call early next week for next steps from Ford customer service. My guess is they'll send me to the original dealer anyway.

Incompetence and negligence every step of the way.

No modifiers!

Folks, read the service manual links posted on page 2 and the rest of the thread stating not to use modifiers. Just buy the OEM fluids. For the cost and the quantity needed, it's not worth trying to use anything else. Just but the specified fluids I posted here. Rock Auto has them here and here.

There is no conflict of information in this thread, only troubleshooting to find the correct information and people trying to advise others that those few posts where someone has used other fluids have done it incorrectly.

If you need other part numbers, I have a bunch on page 2 of my build log in my signature, or here.

That's not what I see in the posts you reference...... The PTU is 75w-85, and the RD is 75w, so, not sure what you are trying to point out?
I agree. 2 rather different oils.

Lots of great info in this thread, thanks everyone.

I'm at ~13k miles and will definitely be replacing both the RDU and PTU oils. I want to start towing a travel trailer that's on the heavy side and don't want to destroy anything.
I'll post if it's low or has extreme sludge (I'm assuming there will be a good amount based on the above comments).

I ordered the OEM Motorcraft 75W for the RDU, but bought the Red Line 50104 75W85 for the PTU before reading the full thread. I've had good experiences with redline oil, but is this a big risk?

Also, is it easy to flush both with a jack/jack stands? I don't have a hoist and want to make sure I can still access the parts and do this with the truck at an angle. I did order a small pump to put the new oil in.

Thanks!

Just another (and contrary) data point for this. I have 17K miles on my early delivery 2022 FX4 (i ordered my truck on day 2). I have not towed with the truck but it has the tow package.

I had the PTU and 'RD' fluid drained and replaced today at the dealer. I was able to watch the tech dump both fluids. The PTU fluid looked great - very clear. Could still see through the fluid. Looked like week old engine oil.

The 'rear dif' fluid was dark brown and opaque but there were very few metal flakes/shavings or debris. It looked completely normal for rear dif fluid at 17k miles.

Based on how the fluid looked the tech postulated that it wouldn't need to be changed any more often then 50k miles.

LOL - i'll still change it out at 20k b/c it is cheap insurance.

Hi all,

I'm ready to replace the Front PTU and Rear Differential Fluids on my FX4 Maverick. In reading through some posts I'm finding some conflicting information. So, I called the dealer and these are the correct part numbers. Let me know if you've seen this before.

Front PTU
XY-75W85-QL

  • Motorcraft® SAE 75W-85 Premium Synthetic Hypoid Gear Lubricant is an excellent multi-purpose extreme pressure lubricant recommended by Ford Motor Company as meeting warranty requirements. It is recommended for conventional and limited-slip differentials of vehicles that specify a fluid meeting WSS-M2C942-A

Rear Differential
XY-75W-QL - Disconnect Rear Drive Unit Fluid
  • Motorcraft® SAE 75W Disconnect Rear Drive Unit Fluid is specifically formulated for Ford disconnect rear drive units with a low offset hypoid gear
  • Developed with a lower viscosity to improve axle efficiency and fuel economy
  • Motorcraft® SAE 75W Disconnect Rear Drive Unit Fluid is formulated with synthetic base stocks, friction modifiers, antiwear, and extreme pressure additives to provide gear protection and smooth clutch operation
  • Use only in Ford Disconnect Rear Drive Units
  • Do not use conventional high-offset hypoid gear axles where SAE 75W-85, 75W-90, 80W-90, or 75W-140 is recommended.
.........................

OP, are the motorcraft p/n XY-75W85-QL & XY-75W-QL you listed are ones that came in/with the mavericks, or are they premium versions?

I'm not OP, but they are the right spec for the Mavericks and what they came with. Unlike oil, there's generally not really a good/better/best situation like with conventional/synthetic blend/synthetic oil. I believe it's the same spec as other Ford vehicles with similar AWD systems like the Bronco Sport and Escape.

I guess anyone can answer, lol.

If they came with the mavericks, why are most people using them again rather than fill it to the top? If it's only good for 5k miles wouldn't putting it back in last another (of the same) 5k?

Those are the manufacture recommended. And what I filled with.
