Happened twice today with mine. Key start, not remote start, so we can rule out the ford pass being an issue. Both times the coolant temp stuck at COLD for 30 minute drive and the out side temp stayed at -11 degrees – 0 degrees when it was 27 degrees out.

Maybe it’s thermostat related

The ambient temp sensor on my Mav had to be re-wired by the dealership. They worked with Ford to make that happen. Not sure if it's the fix for this issue, but the sensor reporting the wrong temperature was what was happening with mine.

Interesting. Mine shows way colder and yours showed hotter. Maybe it’s because of the wind hitting the sensor and the engine being cold from not running much?

I take it that you had heat turned on in the cab?
If so what was the temperature set to?

On your 30 minute drive was the ICE engine running continuous?
Did the cab warm up to what you were asking for or did the cab stay cold?

Don’t think I saw anyone mention this so I thought I’d through it out there. Since this seems to be a replicable problem with more than a few owners affected. It could be worth reporting to NHTSA as well as Ford. The more reports NHTSA receives the more likely they are to put pressure on Ford to find the problem and even issue a recall. Just a thought.

This guy shows how he can reproduce this problem easily.

Surging, stinking, burning...

Maybe a batch of bad ambient temp sensors.

Different vehicle but on my wife's van the temp sensor connector got water in it so it wasn't reading ambient correct and doing some funky stuff because of it

My Mav is still sitting at the Ford serv dept after 3 weeks. They told me on Friday I can pick it up and drive it. Yet, it was only AFTER I told the serv manager that I wasn’t going to use FordPass or let that car warm up that she added to not let it idle in park… in February… in upstate NY.

Anyhow, Ford had sent a field tech to check out my car— they came up with zilch. Word from my service manager is that Ford is going to be issuing a TSB… apparently Ford in Dearborn knows it’s a problem with more than just my Maverick; she had no idea when that TSB was coming.

For my part— I’m not picking up my car. It’s not fixed and it’s not fully functional as far as I’m concerned. I’ve begun the last stage of negotiations with Ford to make it right and then some, but I’ve been given the runaround from the word “go.” Maybe “runaround” isn’t the right term… “brush off” seems more appropriate.

This would have been my family’s 7th Ford. My 3rd, personally, and my first brand new vehicle. I’ve been told nothing about the problem, offered nothing (not even a loaner, even after asking), and this car is not financed— I bought that thing outright, AND a Ford Protect plan. I own this car; not the bank. Doesn’t seem to matter to Ford regardless.

I’m thinking of all the people who have no idea what’s going on with their vehicles. Or maybe they’ll be ambushed the first time they use FordPass in the cold or let their car warm up on a frigid winter morning and burn up their cat, or worse. I guess I know less about cars than I thought, because Ford doesn’t seem to agree that this is a potential fire hazard. Glowing hot molten orange cat and manifold at idle while spewing sulphur dioxide doesnt seem to warrant enough concern to keep my vehicle off the road.

Can’t say I agree with that assessment. And I’m not gonna wait for Ford to do me wrong.

I’m strongly considering selling to Carvana… who’s already made a VERY generous offer.

Food for thought, friends.

I’m glad to say my videos of this problem in action now have over 4,000 views on Youtube. Keep spreading the not-so-good word until Ford gets their act together. They should have every chance to redeem themselves, but unfortunately it often takes many squeaky wheels to get the grease.

I do intend to file a complaint with the NHTSA. I’m inspired by those who already have.

Thanks for bringing us up to speed.
Sorry your truck didn't receive a miracle cure. The field tech came up with zilch means he/she couldn't repeat the problem or couldn't determine the cause of the problem or that molten auto parts are not a problem? Wish Ford was taking better care of you. 😔

Has happened twice now. Seems to be below 10 degrees when this happens.

Noticed mine just got an over the air update today. Haven't checked to see if there were any changelogs or notes that came with it. However, it did disable remote start until I physically get in the truck and turn it on for the first time. I don't know if this is infotainment related only or if this could be an update to "solve" the remote start/cold idea problem.

Grateful for your ear.

Unfortunately I was told nothing by the service department about what the tech learned, what the explanation might be, or receive any reassurance that collateral damage did not occur.

It’s to my understanding the field tech, who travelled a long way to investigate my car, wasn’t able to replicate the problem. The serv manager told me they were waiting for a cold enough day, but the tech had already left.

I appreciate the concern about the way this is shaking out. It would be my joy to have some positive news to report—

Thankfully it looks like Carvana is gonna bail me out. I wish it were Ford, but what can ya do?

My truck dropped offline then as well after displaying this symptom this morning at 0 degrees F.
