Hi all, here is the bike rack that I made.
Materials:
1. 1-1/4 in. x 5 ft. Green Furniture Grade Schedule 40 PVC Pipe (2-Pack)
2. End caps
3. Tee connectors
4. Nylon rivets

Every joint is secured with a rivet. I decided not to glue anything in case I need to replace a piece in the future.

The rivets are facing down (except for a few places that touch the floor, those are facing front), so the are not visible when you look at the rack from any angle.

Another solution to carrying bikes…..
I installed the front molle panel and using ratchet tiedowns secured each side of handlebar to the molle panel. For long trips I also put a strap through back of frame or tire. This leaves most of the bed open, does not interfere with covers when not in use, and is very easy to get bikes out and on the road. I added a piece of PVC sliced lengthwise to make it easier to line up the bike but it is not necessary.

Both of you guys have some nice ideas in this thread! Where's you get these panels? I think they might be a perfect solution for putting in bikes or keeping kayaks from sliding out of the bed

Have you tried it with the tailgate closed & the rear wheels resting on top? That would keep the rearview camera functional

Does the cross traffic alert still work with the tailgate down?

Thank you, no, I haven't tried it - first, I don't think it's safe, and secondly, it might be pretty tricky loading bikes with the tailgate closed.
And the cross-traffic alert does not work with the tailgate lowered.

I bought my molle panel from AMAZON. It is the Szyang brand but there are a couple of other brands that are almost identical.(All run about $180) It bolts down and feels very secure. I wish it was aluminum but seems well coated. I have used it for my bikes, tying down a tiller, and securing gas cans so they don’t slide around. It has been more useful than I had imagined.

I had the same question. I went the $99, near zero effort route. I was just wondering if there was some benefit I wasn’t aware of.

I feel like the closed tailgate makes a really strong guarantee that my $4,500, 58 lb, full suspension, cross-over eMTB isnt going to come flying out. It has Velcro straps over the top tube and head tube. It doesn’t move around at freeway speeds or cornering hard. For long trips, I’ve always added lightweight ratchet straps to the bed tie downs.

Thank you, it's not my invention, there have been quite a few of those made before mine. I just made a few design modifications.

I really like the Bike Rack you made, I have been thinking about how I want to secure my bike in the bed and I may follow you except I only need it for 1 bike. I personally don't want my bike on a rack in my hitch and I don't want to throw it over the Tailgate. You have any dimensions? Thanks and It looks really nice

Thank you, I'll try to find time today and add dimensions to the picture.
Keep in mind that this particular design is for trucks with a trifold tonneau cover, as you can see in the picture the bikes cannot move all the way to the frond of the bed. If you don't have that, you probably want a shorter version.

Nicely done OP!!! (I have a Pipeline Rack kit that I'm fitting. Very similar to yours.)

I just have to finish securing it to the bed. (Building something out of 2x4's.)
