Purchase a buyback/lemon Maverick?

Hi everyone,

I've been eyeing the Maverick since before they were produced. It's a vehicle that fits my lifestyle and my budget. I have an opportunity to get a loaded '22 Lariat at $25-27k with 30k miles. I'm handy and have rebuilt multiple engines (*old* Ford, Jeep, Honda, and Toyota) as well as done various DIY repairs on random stuff on everything.

This Maverick - see attached file for repair history - looks to me like it may have been bought back from a customer that was sick of the now-known recall issues with Mavericks. Nothing stands out as a serious, unknown issue, but that's why I'm here.

Using the attached report, is there anything glaringly risky to purchase? I'm going to test drive and take to my mechanic. I plan on owning for 10 years at least, or rather not worried about resale value with a branded title. Would I be buying someone else's gremlins, or is this a good deal on a Maverick with growing pains?

My Mav was a lemon at 13,000 miles, but I did not accept the buyback and got it fixed. It has been trouble free since.

Seems like some of that is recalls, and some of that is regular maintenance - but I am not sure I would buy a Maverick hybrid with no warranty. I'm with you on being handy, but I have to admit that navigating the HV battery system and all the software is probably not the same as rebuilding an old small block.

Technically, knowing what I know, I would not have bought my Ecoboost without a warranty, either. I am positive many of the Hybrids are problem-free, but going for one with no safety net seems like a thrill-seeking move.

It's an inanimate object without feelings and biases. Sounds like you would be fine.

We here at MTC do have a bias, however. I don't know how "she" drove the car. Sounds like she drove the shit out of it. Such an early build date too. That's just a pass for me. Many of us are driving our own builds so we're not going to settle for anything else. Long haul truckers, so to speak.

No way of knowing if services performed were effective. My guess is not. I wouldn't touch a modern high tech lemon return unless I understood exactly what the problem was and if it can be resolved. With no warranty that price is way too high IMO.

You say you don't know if it was a lemon. Ask the dealer if they can Gold certify it and you want the 10/100k or 10/150k what every warranty you need to feel safe with.

Edit to Add if the dealer or Ford will not Gold certify and cover with the PremiumCare ESP stay far away.

Thanks for the replies, folks. I haven't had a chance to talk in depth to the dealer, but that and a test drive are my next steps.

The truck is for sale from a local, high volume Ford dealer. It comes advertised with a 12 month/12k warranty, which is definitely not enough for me. If the factory warranty still applies ... maybe. I might take this as nothing more than an opportunity to test drive and talk to the dealer about purchasing one new or used with a clean title.

IMHO, the asking price is way too high for a 30,000 mile Maverick. I'd pass for sure.

They sell cars for a living and their quite good at it. I just "think" I'm a badass negotiator and can walk away, but it's not the case. I'll probably get sold on that vehicle and it will be tough to walk away. That's the reason I ordered new.

From the report some may be user error or bad installed aftermarket stuff?
Is your peace of mind and potential for thousands in repairs worth the money you'd save on this one vs a truck with Warranty?

If it had been driven a few years after all these issues, I wouldn't worrry about it. But I wouldn't buy this one.

If you purchase a vehicle that was branded a lemon, ask if your insurance company has any limitations as to insurability.

How much time do you have for all the fuckery that dealers create? Unless you are a tech and have the knowledge, skills and ability to solve problems, like engine shutting down, drive train/CV joint shake, ALL the things the dealer and FoMoCo tried before they bought it back as a lemon, I would not spend that kind of money. The odds are not in your favor that you can turn a lemon into lemonade.

I wonder if we’ll start seeing more of these with multiple recalls and the used prices still sky high that Ford might recoup a lot off of this scheme (they call it the RAV program). If this buyback thing were a trend with similar history, I might be more confident. As it is, I am going to pass on this one and check out some other options they have new and used with clean title. Thanks again forums.

I think getting a new truck is the right move. If you don't get too fancy, you can keep the price under $30k and be sporting a brand new Mav.
