So looks like I am moving from Cali back to my home state of New Jersey. My girlfriend will be driving cross country with me. She has a mid sized SUV. We were planning to drive separately in a short caravan. Someone mentioned that I could tow her car. This seems like a lot for the baby Maverick. Any suggestions?

Do you have the 4k tow package?
What SUV are we talking about?

If you're planning on towing the girlfriends car with the Maverick, I wouldn't attempt to tow it that far. I looked into using my Maverick to tow my step-daughter's car to the mechanic when it was having issues and decided against it. And that was a little Ford Fiesta hatchback.

A vehicle trailer is going to be well over the weight rating of the Maverick. If you're using a tow dolly, you're not going to have trailer brakes and most SUVs+ the dolly are going to be over the weight rating. Its going to be very dangerous towing something that heavy without trailer brakes.

I saw Maverick go by me towing a minivan on a dolly at 70, looked fine.

I know it’s old but in case someone else is curious. It’s fine. I haul my car all over in my 16’ enclosed trailer with all my track gear.

I wonder how well it can panic stop all that mass with no trailer braking? Real men of genius,... Here's to you, Mr. I Can Tow Anything. You successfully overloaded your tiny truck with almost twice its weight and have no safety margin nor trailer brakes.

Personally, I had to be educated via the School of Hard Knocks with a major in Murphy's Law.

My initial reaction is no. Even with a tow dolly you need to remember you can't back up very far because you have little to no control if or which direction the towed vehicle wants to go. Hint, gas stations, hotel parking lots, restaurants, etc. Tow dollies have no brakes so what about a panic stop? Two axle car trailer with brake and SUV will be over the tow capacity of the Maverick. As someone mentioned maybe tow the Maverick but......... see above and what SUV are you talking about?

I’d not do it even with the 4k,
Towing the Mav, not with a midsized SUV, Full size maybe.

According to U-Haul, most of their tow dolleys are equipped with surge brakes. And I believe they require the tow vehicle to be at least 750 lbs (???) heavier than the vehicle being towed.

Ok we can do this all day. For one up until recently which the maverick does not apply we had no standard rating for towing. This recommendations not absolutes.
Safety is only about the driver and choices.
How safe is it to turn over a 1ton pickup and let someone roll at 75mph hauling 32k lbs regardless of the persons experience or ability?
Oh wait but that is probably ok in your world because the truck is rated for 35k.
I can tell you for fact. I own a 1ton rated for that. Towing my 22k lbs bulldozer behind that well under the max is still much more dangerous and stops much much slower than my maverick loaded with 8k.
So here to you Mr safety guy. Glad the world has people like you to let people know what’s safe.
for every person like me we have a person that thinks just because the truck is rated for 30k they can go full speed in the highway and nothing bad can happen cause you know it’s rated to stop that much weight.

I wouldn't do it. The Maverick doesn't weigh a lot and almost any vehicle you put behind it will pushing it around. I flat towed our Mini Cooper (<3000 lb) with my Bronco which weighs more than the Maverick, and it was not a fun pull.

Weight of tow vehicle is much less important than the suspension and the length. If it was about weight we would all want an old school dodge ram. Those weigh a ton.
