Before I found the Maverick (and before used prices went CRAZY), I was looking to get a used 2019 Rav4 XSE in 2022. I figured I could find one coming off lease for a decent price. When I found the Maverick and I could get what I wanted for $10k less then the new Rav4, I was sold. I need a car by December 2022, and my biggest worry was it coming in too soon. Fast forward 6.5 months later. No build date, and with my configuration, a good chance to be pushed to a 2023 model.
So I started looking around. I'm leaning towards a Kia EV6 at the moment. I know the Rav4s are hard to get, especially in the XSE trim. The EV6s are brand new, but several dealers "think" they could have one for me within a month or 2. I'll pay MSRP or I'll walk.
I'm trying to talk my wife into getting the Kia EV6 as her commuter car. She only had a 16 mile round trip and her work has a charging station in the back where she parks. It would be great to use for our trips that average 150-200 total miles. The Maverick will be the small boat towing, mulch transporting, and trash taking vehicle.

If I was buying Lariat priced vehicles, and didn't need the truck bed but still wanted a hybrid, I'd just get a Ford Escape AWD with hybrid engine. They already exist and they will obviously drive just like the Maverick does... But without the truck bed.

I don't know why, but I don't like the interior in the Escape. Even in the Titanium trim, something just screams rental car to me... If it had the same interior storage options and center console/dash layout as the Maverick (minus the little cubby by the screen), I would definitely consider it.

I was sitting in a 2015 base Escape prior to my Maverick. So I guess I had just gotten used to it 🤣

We plug it in every day. For us it is no different than plugging in a cell phone every day. It's hard to tell how much it has changed the electric bill, but it isn't much. (Some months we are gone more than half the month, others we are home almost all month. In addition to that it gets plugged in at the employee lot at no charge). Based on our electric rates it cost under $1.50 to travel the electric range of 42 miles. So, based on your current mileage and cost of gas you can figure out how much it would be to drive your vehicle the same distance. All local driving is done in pure electric. Rarely do we use the entire 42 miles of electric range. We do drive (maybe 1 or 2 times a month) on a trip to see family (300 miles roundtrip) which obviously uses gas.

The $7,500 rebate is based on your taxes. In order to get that all back you have to have paid more than that amount in taxes for that year.

It really sounds like you don’t want a truck. If you’re fine with the cargo area of an SUV, then you definitely don’t need a truck, since many of your needs and wants can be totally satisfied by a hybrid SUV or hatchback. Since one of your main wants is keeping the dog in the cargo area then definitely don’t get a truck unless your state allows dogs to ride in the back.

I would consider the Honda CRV and Hyundai Tucson hybrids in your decision. Both are under $30K before fees and taxes. Both are considered pretty reliable vehicles and both can be found at MSRP or lower.

I was shopping for a Prius when I decided on the Maverick. The Prius is a great car. I am not a fan of the regular Rav4 or Rav4 hybrid... but I would love a Rav4 Prime. However, good luck finding any of these without a significant markup.

If you can wait, I say wait for the Maverick.

I have to admit that I was holding on hope, but that recent dealer memo kinda put the first nail in the coffin for me. The more I think about it, the more I wonder if the Maverick is the right vehicle for me.

I wanted the Maverick because it was a hybrid and for the price range ($31K Lariat), I could finally have a bit of luxury in one of my vehicles. I understand forums are a place where mainly negative grievances are shared, but all the reviews of the easily scuffed interior, paint chipping, and the overall views of ford being a rusty, cheaply built vehicle, is the Maverick really the little bit of luxury I am hoping it would be? I still have yet to be able to get up close or sit in one in my area.

A pickup truck was nice, but the more I think about it, is it really practical for my lifestyle? Mainly because I have dog that always rode in the back of my hatchback and in the Mav, she would have been all over the seats. Plus for Florida, if I wanted any cargo in the back to be relatively water tight, that's another $1,000 for a Tonneau cover.

I found myself looking at a hybrid 2022 Rav4 XSE. Factoring the in tanneau cover needed for the Mav, it's only $3k more (I have not researched dealer markups or anything yet). It has the same powertrain and near identical fuel economy, plus I understand Toyota has a pretty good reputation for good build quality and reliable vehicles. Not factoring in the loss of a pickup bed which may or may not be right for my lifestyle anyway, the only creature comforts I would be losing would be the premium audio and I understand Toyota has a less intuitive adaptive cruise technology.

Thoughts?
I bought a 2018 RAV4 hybrid XLE new…. Happy ever since. 33-34 mpg, AWD and except for oil changes and tire rotations, after the free 2 years maintenance it’s cost and worry free. I ordered the Maverick with the ecoboost because I’m never going 2 wheel drive again…. Not sure what I’ll do when/if the maverick gets built… I might lease or trade in the RAV4…. But I ordered in September and figure I’m months away from having to make the decision. BTW I’ve owned 9 new Toyota’s in the last 15 years.

Going on Sunday to look at them. Depending on how insane the markups are, I might have to consider the SE. I do love the digital dash and larger entertainment screen though on the XSE model... If it had that dash and screen, I would be more willing to drop the leather and moonroof.
There is an audio package that gives you the larger infotainment screen. Not sure about the digital dash.

Yes, you can add the audio package, which adds a bunch of other stuff, but there is no option to upgrade the dash. And then at that point anyway, you're back up to the cost of an XSE anyway.

Ok, I understand where you are coming from on not wanting to wait, but there are other hybrid Ford options

Escape Hybrid FWD or AWD, roughly 40MPG

Escape PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid), has tax rebate available, FWD only

My wife and I were looking into the PHEV Escape until she decided on the Maverick

Just an idea: https://www.corwinfordofspringfield.com/new-Springfield-2022-Ford-Escape-SE+Hybrid-1FMCU9BZ0NUA33867
I have a 2021 Escape Titanium hybrid with all gadgets including heads up display and self parking, built in nav, full up sync-3 with XM and AWD. 40+mpg and priced at 40k. Great suv and great value. My Mav is scheduled lariat, lux, 360 and while i look forward to getting it - the Escape has it beat hands down. I tested all the Hybrid SUV’s and based on price and quality it cannot be beat.

The Escape seems to have a lot going for it, but I just don't like it. A friend has a 2020 SEL with the EB engine and a sticker price of $33k. Comparing it to our rental (at the time) 2020 CX-5 GT.. the quality difference was absolutely enormous. The Mazda was so much better in every single way.

My distaste for the Escape may mean that I am a very short term Maverick owner.

I was considering the Prime but its a little out of my price range. From my understanding, the federal tax credit does not get deducted from the cost of the car, correct?

Also, how often do you plug it in and how much has your electricity bill gone up?
you get the tax credit when you claim your taxes so when you file for 2022. Do research on the plug-in rav4 though. I was considering it too but YouTube turned me off of it. Don’t know if you’re from a cold climate or not but I found a review from someone in Toronto, remote start is not reliable at all and the heat doesn’t work when the temp is below 20 degrees, something to do with the hybrid system. It gets amazing mpg numbers but there is always some sacrifices.

I'm actually from Florida and from what I hear that's prime for EVs, minus the AC. Been actually leaning more towards the prime the more I research it. Thinking about pulling out of savings and reimbursing myself when the tax credit comes in so I could put more down so it's more in our price range.
