Where you buy gas is irrelevant. The computer which keeps track of your driving habits and milage determines the miles to empty reading. That varies constantly because you are not driving on a flat road at a constant speed. What matters is the reading for total miles driven MPG, not how much gas you are filling your tank with at various times. I know from my Hybrid that getting 46.5 MPG is not easy. I start from start slowly, if no one is behind me, and coast as far as I can before stopping. I use the "L" on the dial shifter to help slow down and generate more battery power. I use the "Power Flow" app on the center screen to help me keep as much "electric" driving as possible as well as the "drive coach" on the left side screen. There is a setting that uses a horizontal bar to show which driving mode the truck is in, Electric, Charging or Hybrid. I use the bar all the time. If you can moderate the gas paddle to keep the "electric" driving in that bar, you will max milage. The issue is with the Hybrid that I have noticed is the battery that powers the driving motor isn't powerful enough to get up to speed, say 45 mph, if you have to keep up with traffic. the engine will always kick in. But if you headed down a hill or slight decline, you can max the electric driving until the battery has to be recharged again by the engine. From my experience it will be a challenge to get to 50MPG in my area North of Atlanta. It's hilly here and not many flat surface roads. I'm one of those guys that tries my level best to max the MPG, you have to be totally focused using your driving skills without getting in the way of drivers behind you.
Found your post interesting.i had a 82 rabbit. 4spd gas engine, that I could break 50 mpg.also has an 04 Saturn, which also was a 4 SPD that I could break 50 mpg. You'd think 40 years later vehicles could exceed not just match those mpg numbers. I do realize the rabbit was a lot lighter and primitive however the Saturn was heavier and more modern.

So how did I have 400 miles to empty now getting 313 miles to empty it's not consistent miles from full to empty
The miles to empty is computerized on your average mpg driven.

Ok option 1 sounds more likely just need to find one that has a slower or more even gas flow to maximize the distance to empty
You will also somehow have to guarantee you travel the same speed for every second of that tank, and make the same amount of stops, and drive in the same grade of surface…..you would have to also somehow guarantee SO MANY factors in order to keep those reading the same. Your truck is always analyzing and adjusting based on statistics. The only way would be to control every single variable and that is literally impossible. This was very fun to read though 😂

What I'm gathering from this is he's checking the Miles To Empty right after fueling. At Walmart the reading is lower. He's assuming the tank is full in both cases. My guess is the Walmart pump is shutting off sooner than the other.
Look at how much gas is being pumped in each case, not miles to empty.

Well, it could be a number of things:
1. Most likely: you didn't actually fill your tank as full on your "313" fill up versus your "400" fill up. Perhaps the flow rate was faster at the "313" gas station, and the nozzle clicked off earlier than it did at the "400" gas station.
2. You were driving more aggressively after your "313" fill up versus your "400" fill up.
Seriously, the "miles to empty" number is an estimate, based on your current driving conditions. One might even call it a "guesstimate." Bottom line: The brand of gas you buy has no effect whatsoever on the "miles to empty" number that the car's display shows you. Zero. You might notice a very slight difference by using gas with different octane ratings. But where you buy your gas has no effect on "Miles to Empty." Really!
Give the guy a break folks…

I think #1 is what is happening here—The manual instructs to stop fueling on first shutoff and not “top up”. There must be a difference on when the fuel shutoff occurs between the different stations.

Try using the second setting that more slowly fills the tank, instead of the faster fill.

In year 2000 I had a Honda Insight that would get 72 MPG. 80+ MPG if I was gentle.

Comforts and perhaps automotive safety has gotten better over the years. MPG is kind of stagnant.

As many have have mentioned "your mileage may vary". I was a manufacturers district manager for 15 years and met with many customers and some dealer personnel who didn't really understand how the miles to empty computer calculation worked. It is just an estimate based on the fuel in the tank, current speed and driving style....and is never very accurate when you just have filled the tank.

Also, many customers did not understand that although the owners manual stated their car had an 18 gallon fuel tank, they could only get 16.5 gallons in the tank. That is due to the air space needed for fuel expansion and contraction due to temperature changes, emission control parts as well as fuel displacement from the in tank fuel pump. No amount of explanation would convince some people that if the owners manual states it holds 18 gallons they should be able to get 18 gallons of fuel in the tank!!

And don't get me stated about automatic climate control LOL!
Good luck with your Maverick

It is strange owner's manuals don't just print "nominal fill volume". Wait. Maverick does.

13.8 is the Hybrid nominal fill volume.
The actual tank size is 16.5 gallons.

EB has a 16.5 gallon nominal fill volume and an 18.5 to 19 gallon tank size.

MPG. Check that, too. The calculation will take that into consideration and total range per tank will vary.

Exactly! And to those of you who will swear up and down that Brand X gas is better than Brand Y gas, I spent a good part of my youth working at a national brand gas station (which I will leave nameless), and we would sometimes get gas delivered from that brand's tanker trucks. Other times we'd get deliveries from a local ag business' trucks. Bottom line: You're not always going to get what you think you're going to get. Caveat emptor!
This is correct most gas comes from the same distributor that then delver it to XYZ gas stations . Examples (Motiva) delivers to 76,shell, Mobil, Texaco and a few others -- same distributor - different gas stations

When I fill my Hybrid at my local WalMart it usually says I have between 480 and 525 mile to empty but it changes rapidly depending on how I drive. If I hit the highway it will drop to under 350 and if I just stay in town, it goes over 400. I think it's just the way to generalize your overall mileage related to your driving.

As said, a lot depends on IF you let the nozzle click of and stop there. Because of the speed of flow the faster flows will get the nozzle to click off before the slower flow. IF I fill my tank and want to get it the same amount of full each time, AFTER the nozzle clicks off I manually slow the rate of flow and listen to what the gas "sounds" like as it is getting full and try to make it "sound" that way each time I fill up.
