In defense.
Some of the news reports state that the crash disconnected the trailer. Others news outlets stated. The driver recognize the danger when the trailer caught fire and disconnected the tractor from the trailer.

Its the access road, the highway is usually shut down to 1 lane from 9pm to 6am m-f. Most people haul ass down the access roads or at least try to and they are the ones that cause wrecks. This particular access road has a speed limit of 40 mph. I see it every night on my way back into our yard.
So to most SA drivers that means 80 (posted speed x 2).
I friggen retired 1-1/2 years ago mainly because I was tired of the bullshit on
I-10. 35 years back and forth (90 miles) down that highway and it’s worse than ever. Interstate 35 may be worse, this is what happens when you have minimal enforcement and maximum idiots.

It's definitely worse now. Too many idiots moving here combined with construction everywhere.

All the crash protection or "crumple zone" is in the front half of the vehicle, forward of the firewall. It really appears that the front of the truck missed most of the impact. The damage looks to be mostly to the windshield and the top. Basically, the driver has zero chance of surviving that. Unfortunately, the hood of most normal-height vehicles fits neatly underneath the back of a tractor trailer.
You're right. The front end was barely touched. I see that now after looking again at the picture. The safety bar on the rear of the trailer wasn't low enough for the Maverick. Driver had no chance.

Isn't that the truth. Seems as though we have a virus of stupid drivers lately.

So I originally thought a fuel rail must have broken spraying fuel on the hot exhaust. Maybe the hood caved in enough to contact a fuel line or high pressure GDI pump?
Forgive me if it’s been addressed earlier but was it a hybrid or Ecoboost?
Terrible way to go, you never know what the future holds.

Lot's of possibilities. I'm sure since a death was involved they're doing a full investigation on what happened. You're right, a terrible way to go. Let's hope the fire occurred postmortem.

I was behind an 18 wheeler yesterday in traffic and was thinking about this story. The ride height of our trucks and many SUVs on the road align the hood just beneath the height of the trailer. In a collision, if the trailer bumper gives out, then there is nothing to protect the cab. A horrible situation. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims family.

For that kind of damage, the driver must have been traveling at a high rate of speed. It looks like the Maverick would have protected the driver from the initial crash and except for the fire, he might have survived.
The back of the Semi Trailer Ripped through all the way to the drivers seat. Slamming your head and chest into that at 80MPH is not survivable.

That's correct. After reviewing the video, it's clear the Maverick slid under the crash bar rather than engaging the front end which is designed to absorb a crash force. Sad situation all around.

Semi truck bumpers need a redesign.
