Try again. That is nothing more than a warning to take precautions when using poison bait. I do. Because secondary poisoning is POSSIBLE. I want proof, not fake news and scare tactics. Your link states predators are "vulnerable" to secondary poisoning. Yeah, no sht. It also states "deaths associated with secondary poisoning is not well known". Exactly, that is basically what I already said. I have 5 dogs. I have no problems. So you don't need to worry and make up sht about me killing all kinds of other animals. Why did you buy a EB? Don't you know they produce way more, like 5 times more, toxic brake dust that ends up in the waterways and kills fish? Shame on you. Go protest the damn wind power that kills millions of birds (documented) every year. I quit the Nature Conservancy over their promotion of wind power as green energy. Nothing green about it. ☮
Your replies remind me of the old saying “ignorance is bliss”. Peace out man.

To the OP: sorry you had a bad experience at your local Ford dealership. Why the reluctance to share which dealership that experience took place at? That might help "shake some peaches from the tree." At a minimum it would help others in your area from making the same mistake.

I have to say, dealerships tend to get a bad rap. Lots of that is left over from the "bad old days" of dealer "packs" and jacking prices up well beyond MSRP. Finance managers still try to sell you "extended warranties" for inflated prices and use the time-tested technique called "FUD" (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) that sales people have used for decades.

My first car purchase was over 50 years ago and all but a few of those purchases have been from dealerships. Up until the purchase of my Maverick, I still had an aversion to dealerships in general, and their sales staff in particular.

My recent experience with my local dealership - Paso Robles Ford - was simply outstanding.

I got:

1) No pressure - none, zero - from sales
2) Transparent pricing - I saw the dealer's invoice
3) No pressure or "FUD" from the Finance Manager

They have:

4) An excellent Service Department, with competitive pricing

To be fair, we have been taking my wife's Ford Edge in for service at Paso Robles Ford for many years. (One of the service writers there used to work for a trusted, local, independent mechanic who has since retired.) They have always given us top shelf service at a fair and reasonable price. The service experience was 50% of my decision to buy the Maverick. But I was sold by the sales experience, even before the employee pricing program was announced.

My point is, not all dealerships are bad or dishonest. In fact, I'd go so far as to say many dealerships - especially in a smaller community like ours - cannot afford to have a bad reputation.

Finally, as far as the OP's experience is concerned... there is a minimum amount of accountability you have as a vehicle owner. While you may choose to ignore that accountability (and responsibility) you do so at your own risk, as you found out.

Is a diagnosis for $9K appropriate? My opinion is "No." However, bringing a car in for service with a "nest" of any kind under the hood - rodent or otherwise - is, at best, embarrassing. (It would be for me.) At worst, is a conclusion by a service tech that the problem needs $9,000.00 of remediation. As the old saying goes, caveat emptor.

Good that you got the problem fixed by a mechanic you trust. Maybe save some grief next time and perform some due diligence prior to a visit for service, whether to a dealership or an independent mechanic. The problem you've described is not limited to Ford vehicles or their dealerships. There are nightmare stories about independent shops too.

Good luck getting the satisfaction you seek. Throwing the vehicle under the bus isn't the solution.

I have a 2024 Maverick, XL Hybrid, bought new (7/13/24) with just under 1 year of warranty left. A few months ago I Suddenly had start, and running problems. I see from this owners groups this is a known problem with battery issues. Mine got to the point it would hardly start, and most of the time it did start, it would then just shut off. I worried if I could drive it to the dealer to see about service, well I was scared I may loose power on the freeway, so I had it towed to the dealer I bought it from. I told them the problem. and that I had read the battery was a likely problem. My dealer, name withheld at this time, instead tried to tell me I needed a $9.000.00 wiring harness replacement due to "rodent damage" they gave me pictures to show this damage, however they were from so far away you couldn't see anything, and I do believe this was part of their scam. Anyhow there is no rodent damage to be found. I did have a bird trying to nest under the hood, and she kept dragging in straw to make her nest, but even me doing an inspection could see none of these rodent chewed wires.

Fearing a scam I had my truck towed to my personal mechanic who I do trust. He spent some time looking for "rodent damage", and all he could find was a battery that would not hold a charge, or start the truck. The battery was replaced, and viola the "rodent damage" went away. So now I am out of pocket for over $700.00 to replace a battery still under warranty, and a lot of man hours LOOKING for rodent damage that did NOT exist. The battery was used with a jumper station, and taken out and tested by them, and their battery company, and it has been found to be dead, and unable to hold a charge. I have kept the battery, and plan to allow the media to do independent testing to verify this. After talking to local news a few of them are pretty interested in a "Can you trust your car dealer" story

I spent over $29,000.00, on a truck I have not driven 5,000 miles yet, and had to buy at MY expense a new battery, because Ford puts cheap crap in their vehicles, and their representing dealers try to invent damage that isn't there, so their service department can make a big score.

I have also called the FORD complaint line, talked to a nice young Lady, who said someone would be contacting me right away about this. I can still hear the crickets chirping. A month, and no word from FORD. I can assure you, anyone that wants to hear my FORD experience is welcome to hear it, no lies just really bad service. I wouldn't suggest anyone buy a FORD product.

Wondering if this is typical?

These are pics the Ford dealer gave me of the "RODENT DAMAGE" there are several, at least you can see wiring in the 3 that I am posting here, most of them there are no wires in the shot at all. What there is are pieces of straw from the bird.

The following pics are from my mechanic, he either circled, or put an arrow to any wiring in the shot. There are several of them, and you cannot see any "rodent damage" in any of them, plus with detailed visual inspection by 2 of his best guys, they saw no damage, but after testing the battery they did find it to be dead, and it wouldn't hold a charge. New AGM battery made the rodent damage go away, amazing. Not sure what you call that where you live, but here in Ohio we call that fraud. Invented problem to sell a big money repair.

I loved this truck, then it had a problem. Had it been addressed properly, and professionally all would have been fine. After this fraud attempt I'm not real keen on the truck, even though it appears ok for now. My issue with the truck is how many $350.00 batteries do I need to buy, how often. Seems anything you may have saved in gas with the hybrid goes up in smoke with battery cost. I know one thing FORD isn't on my Christmas card list anymore, and that dealer could fall into a fiery chasm, and I would applaud.

Regrettably it sounds like your issue is without dealer and not the vehicle. While it is a known issue, a reputable dealer should have replaced the battery under warranties. If you have a lawyer in your family or circle of friends, I would connect.with them

Ford has some control: Chronic low performance or failure to meet brand standards can lead to official contract cancellation. Contracts have been terminated. When things go wrong, speak (respectfully) to the General Manager or if possible, the local owner. Most managers/owners will remedy the situation. Negative feedback is a reflection on them.

I once took my vehicle in for recall work. They handed my vehicle back to me with fresh belt buckle scratches on the left front fender. I asked for the service manager, who promptly stated that "It didn't happen here." Without saying a word, I turned around and headed to the office area. The service manager asked "Where are you going?" I replied over my shoulder as I continued walking that I was going to speak to the general manager. "Wait a minute" he said. He got a car jockey to apply polishing compound to the area and asked me to take a look. I eyeballed for swirls and scratches - there weren't any. The whole process took around 15 minutes. I coolly and calmly looked him in the eyes, and rhetorically asked "was that so hard?" as I got into my truck. He didn't say a word. He probably had conversations with the general manager before.

A relative of mine worked at new car dealerships (GM) for over 45 years prior to retireing, in every capacity except mechanics. I will never forget how he described a new car dealership. "Look at the showroom floor", he said. "Then take a walk to the service department and notice the 40 plus bays to service and repair vehicles. ' "Not counting those areas doing body work." "WHAT A NEW CAR DEALERSHIP IS, IS A REPAIR SHOP THAT HAPPENS TO SELL NEW AND USED CARS." The service department should collect several times the volumn in sales compared to what the sales department does.

Share the service estimate. No need to share dealer or personal details.

Dealers are franchise owners, Ford has limited power in their oversight of the dealer. You have a Ford, there are many Ford dealers to choose from, go to a different dealer.
Good answer. I'll go one further. There are good dealerships that hire the wrong service manager.
I may be wrong but thought Ford got away from soy bean insulation on their wiring which encourage rodents. Still, I can't say that there was an attempt to rip you off because it could have been a tech jumping to conclusions when he saw all the organic matter in the engine bay.

12v lithium replacements are designed to work on AGM battery charging systems. How do you think they work in boats? Their have their own internal BMS that takes the AGM charging signal and uses it to charge the internal cells without requiring the host device to recognize the battery chemistry change.

Please do some research. The way the hybrids work, constantly trying to maintain 80% SoC on the 12v system, is a prime target for lithium tech. Lead Acid has been long abandoned in most sectors for a reason.
I'm well aware of your "research", I've looked into it years ago when all the deep sleep stuff for the Maverick first started showing up back in 2022. The SLI (non AMG) that came factory in my 22 Hybrid is still working 4 years later. Do I have deep sleep? Yup, but I don't use the app so it's a non-issue. Car batteries die over time, it's part of life.

As for lithium batteries, people do all kinds of dumb stuff they don't need to do. The day I trust some cheap BMS in a Chinese made battery is the day I buy a Chinese EV as my only form of transportation. Have a good day.

FYI, I had all kind of stuff done to remidy this issue, from Ford without needing aftermarket stuff. Customer satifaction program replaced the 12v charging cable, under hood fuses replaced, software updates etc. Chances are the factory battery will last another year, which is just about right. I'll buy a new battery when I need it, and not before.

That sums up why 50% of my decision to buy a new Ford in the first place was based on our experiences at our dealership's service department. My wife came back from her first service there very happy. Since then, she feels confident that she'll be taken care of and treated fairly.

In my opinion, a good service department can make or break a dealership's reputation. The sales transaction happens once. Service transactions happen repeatedly over the life of the vehicle. Where and how those transactions take place, and how they are handled, is the responsibility of the service department.

The only time my vehicle sees a dealer is when it has warranty issues or recalls. And with the Maverick, I got to know quite a few folks and dealers. I almost invited one of the service advisors over for Thanksgiving with how often we saw each other at the service desk.

Yeah, I have bought a lot of batteries as well, but I usually buy new, and drive them till the wheels come off, or a few years and pass them along to a family member in need of a ride. Never before have I had a battery issue under warranty before, especially with less than 5K miles on it. The way I see it this is like a set of tires going bad with 5K miles, I've never heard of anything as lame before. IF this is from a bunch of systems running all the time, you have to ask? Do I need these systems running? Is this some kind of spyware? What exactly HAS to be happening to actually require this? Makes no sense to me, but I freely admit I am an old fart, and I can remember a time when the engineers were about making a safe car, not a marketing machine.

MaverickSVT AND dpequip

I would say that I would be skeptical that a bird brought all that straw into your engine bay. Unless you leave your hood open all the time, than maybe it’s possible.
I would guess seed my your pics, that the straw was not brought in by a bird.
I could easily be wrong.

Yes, you are incorrect. Kindly re-read and see the part where I was standing right there and Mommy Grackle flew into the opened hood with a mouthful of grass and straw, and that she was in constant motion during daylight hours. Being Spring, then Summertime that is a much longer day, so she had a lot of hours to make a lot of trips, and like I said, she was in constant motion. I was surprised in a such a short time between trips she could gather as much stuff. My only thought where, was from the neighbors horse barn. Though it looks rather clean, it's the only place close enough that could account for so much straw, and grasses.

Fibrepunk, In the months leading up to it's total meltdown, I either jumped it, or had AAA come to my location and jump me several times. At the end it was past jumping. At that point it was also throwing off a bunch of crap codes, a lot of stupid stuff. Battery wouldn't hold any charge, was dead.
By your own admission, you ignored the battery problem multiple times, until it became catastrophic. Did you really expect the battery to "cure" itself as it got older? Doesn't AAA offer to replace batteries when they come out for a jump start?

Good luck with your litigation.

HRG

Did you miss that the vehicle while being 2 + years old now has less than 5,000 miles on it? Plus nowhere on either the FORD invoice sticker said vehicle MUST be driven every day, nor did the salesman, or anyone at this dealership tell me I needed to drive it daily, or XYZ amount of miles a day. So I really fail to see the point you are attempting to make. I didn't ignore squat. For a long time, it was just hard starting, then it went to needing jumped for about 7 to 10 days, but none of it was the battery life I have experienced on new cars in the past. Had I actually acted sooner I still probably wouldn't have been eligible for Lemon Law which is stupidly based on time, rather than use. Big Auto $$$$$$$$$ impacted that law if they had to eat it, they wanted Vegas odds, not common sense. So yeah I'm not sure I see the point you are trying to make.

The Lawyer costs nothing, all on contingency, so if he doesn't think there is a win??? I'm not a Lawyer, but most of them don't work for free.

Since having 2 cats that I liked killed this way I have looked around the net, and seen a number of terms for it. The vet called it Rodenticide Toxicity, and said usually it kills the kidneys, and this in turn kills the cat. I think further mortality is seen in birds of prey, and A type predators. Of domesticated animals Cats seem to be most impacted.

In terms of what people want to believe, there are many who deny that millions of Jews were killed during WWII in German death camps, or that anyone even got sick from Covid, much less died. You can't argue with that, you just can't.

tiktokbrainrot

The simplest solution to the hybrids battery issues is a lithium swap. Boat guys long moved to 12v lithium alternatives, they work much better with infrequent charging.

I am definitely not a battery eggspurt, but you would think FORD should have one on staff if they are going to make rides that run on batteries. My mechanic also denies being a battery pro, but he said he did understand what FORD was expecting the lead acid POS battery they were using to do, and he thought it was "asking a lot out of a turd" His words.

MikeS1942 and tiktokbrainrot Yes a fraudulent dealership, who at least I will not trust, and FORD seemingly has their back. My hope is to illuminate this to the point one of them actually does something about this, but I don't have a good feeling about anything FORD at this point. I will willingly allow any 3rd party to look at either the truck, or the old battery, but it will be a cold day in the Netherworld before anything I own goes to any FORD place. BTDTGTTS

DWV

Sorry, I don't think I was taken. I told him, go over it with a fine tooth comb, have 2 guys look so a second set of eyes will maybe see what someone else missed. I wanted to know if there actually were any chewed wires, that I didn't see. I took it to him because I do trust him to do what needs to be done, and do it correctly. He has saved me thousands of $$$$$$ over the years, not fixing things that were ok. He is a rarity in todays world, and I am glad he's available to me.

icegradner

Ok, so this is educational. I am not a battery eggspurt. I just know I have never had a dead battery on a car under warranty, and this would have been new car number 43 for me, and my wife. My mechanic said he thought that battery was asking a lot out of a turd, so I took that to mean he thought it was a POS. He deals with all cars and trucks, new and used. So this entire era of AGM battery vehicles to put up with increased demands, whether they be real or invented, and to put so much on this battery he thought it was a bad look, cost savings for sure.

BK007

Isn't that the truth. I like butter and light salt.

MavStangVa

I only used AAA when I wasn't home, and got stranded by a dead non functional battery on a ride with less than 5,000 miles on it. All of which occurred over a period of a week, maybe 10 days. Make it sound like I ignored it isn't close to reality, but believe what you want. Note the answer where I talked about peoples beliefs, does it look familiar to you?

James K

Good answer. I agree the tech did jump to conclusions, and made the further jump off the bridge when he told the service writer he found evidence of rodent damage to the wiring, at which time one or both of them determined the rodent damage was so spectacular the only remedy was a total replacement of the complete wiring harness, no sireee can't just fix what is chewed got to do it all. It's at that point when they went from stupid, to lying, and then trying to make money off of it which is called fraud.

To any thinking I completely neglected this truck, this isn't the truth. I have said now several times that I was standing next to the truck with the hood up and Mommy Grackle flew in with a mouthful of straw and grass, and she was on a nonstop run. I couldn't keep up with her determination, I do have a life to live, and this nest was her life. If you think that isn't true, I cannot help you, but I will hope you get to experience the same, that would probably change your mind.

I had hard starting, and sometimes (1 out of 10 starts) it would start, to promptly shut off on it's own. It wasn't until the last 7 to 10 days that I needed to jump it, and most of that time it did jump. I will admit it pissed me off to be jumping a vehicle with less than 5K miles on it, and I still think this entire battery thing is cost saving BS FORD putting cheap crap in a vehicle to sell lower, or make more $$$$ but not to build a safer, or better vehicle. Putting junk in a product is to build a junk product.

Makes no sense to me, but I freely admit I am an old fart, and I can remember a time when the engineers were about making a safe car, not a marketing machine.

By your own admission, you ignored the battery problem multiple times, until it became catastrophic. Did you really expect the battery to "cure" itself as it got older? Doesn't AAA offer to replace batteries when they come out for a jump start?

Good luck with your litigation.

BTDTGTTS

In your own words "what a MAROON"! Any vehicle that sits the battery will drain. I have a 2005 Mustang, 20k miles, I bought it 3 years ago with a 1 year old battery in it. Last spring it was dead, took it out had it charged and tested at NAPA. Bad cells. Bought a new battery and a tender for it. Your tire analogy actually works against you. Yes tires with only 5k miles on them could be bad due to age, dry rot. Also why in HE double hockey sticks did you leave the hood open all summer and watch birds trying to build nests in the engine bay? Had you ever read ANYTHING about Maverick hybrids prior to buying 1 you would have known about the 12v battery being charged poorly via the hvb NOT an old fashioned alternator. Sorry you had a bad dealer experience but it is NOT the truck's fault. You previously said you had been jumping it or using AAA over a period of months.

To all who talked about which dealer, my attorney suggested I not say who. Actually after all of this has happened I have spent some time trying to discern if there is a FORD dealer anywhere close to me, that is worth trying to deal with, and so far I have not been thrilled by any of them, and I live in the country, but it's between Dayton, and Cincinnati Ohio, which has quite a few dealers. I will say they are East of Dayton Ohio, and the dealers location used to be a Honda dealer. I had dealt with them, and they were first rate, but when it went to FORD they have a new business name involved, and they suk. Actually were just adequate through the buy, it was service that they started showing themselves to be not so good.

Techcar, I have called FORD, also told the dealer what I thought of their fraud business, so they are both informed. At this point I just want to put my story out there to hopefully keep other working folks from getting the same fate I had buying a FORD product.

Fibrepunk, In the months leading up to it's total meltdown, I either jumped it, or had AAA come to my location and jump me several times. At the end it was past jumping. 1929, I don't have a paper that I can put into a file and mount here. It's a text message, and I haven't a clue how to even get it off my phone, a Samsung if anyone knows, I'd be happy to share it. Same stupid service writer still thinks I am going to pay them 9K for work that doesn't need to be done.

Dave O, NO. I would consider driving it up the rectal area of FORDS CEO though.

Glen Baker LLC, Got it, the WOKE companies are trying to use materials that are junk, but also "GREEEN" so they get votes from the prissy party. Thing is there would need to be rodents to eat the wire, and the herd of cats all eat more than we feed them, so it's like putting out rodent be gone. Plus I saw the bird putting the junk up in the engine compartment.

BK007 Love the pic

Chops, we are out in the country. Rodents aren't a secret. They are everywhere, but we have a tribe of barn cats, and anywhere around where we are, the rodents are pretty thin, they don't last too long.

zen_ I did take it to my regular mechanic, he checked it out looking at it as a definite safety issue, he spent some time at my request to find if it was safe to drive, or not. Once it had a good battery all of the warning lights, and goofy codes went away. He's a good mechanic, and the most important thing is I trust him. The pics with circles, and arrows are his.

jkennedy293, It really wasn't a long time thing. I could be standing with the hood up and this dumb Grackle Mommy would fly right in with me standing there. Mouthful of straw and grass. She was non stop during daylight hours. I had considered getting the shotgun out and treat her like a clay bird. I didn't before, she comes back around doing that stuff, she's dusted.

ExpoGuy I don't know the answer to that question

bgn, best suggestion yet, didn't think about Attorney Generals office, thanks

Fcnrwy why don't you HRG and jerry go on a date, and bite each other. YES maroons, searches about my problem did lead me here. Does that mean I won't come back? Maybe it will be true if members posses your lack of any human decency.

ricwan, They texted me the response to what was going on with my truck, telling me they FOUND rodent damage, but there is no rodent damage to be found by certified mechanics working at the shop I usually go to. This is where they dropped the $9,000.00 bomb, but I still have the text, just no idea how I could send it to this forum?

gjallen, we have lost 2 cats to a neighbor who used a lot of poisons for rodents. I won't use it because of this truth, but a lot of folks don't have, or like cats, so a popular choice sadly for the animals that go after them wobbling around

Fibrepunk, Absolutely, was total for several hours of "looking" by 2 mechanics. Battery was somewhere around 250 IIRC.
I take back what I said. You sound like a huge headache, dealer probably trying to get you to take a hike. 🤣

At the time this was playing in my mind

Yeah, I have bought a lot of batteries as well, but I usually buy new, and drive them till the wheels come off, or a few years and pass them along to a family member in need of a ride. Never before have I had a battery issue under warranty before, especially with less than 5K miles on it. The way I see it this is like a set of tires going bad with 5K miles, I've never heard of anything as lame before. IF this is from a bunch of systems running all the time, you have to ask?
