This is partially inaccurate advice, starting interval is too long and a few minutes will not keep the battery charged.If you are letting your car sit long enough that a bird can build a nest in it, you are going to have battery problems in any car. Since you don't drive it a lot, I would recommend starting the truck up every couple of weeks and let it idle for a few minutes. This will help keep the battery charged. Else, you could get a trickle charger to keep the 12V battery charged.
I know this doesn't resolve any past issues, but it might help prevent future issues.
You are correct that a trickle charge will eliminate the problem.
