Hello Gang, long time listener and first time request for advice caller. I'm looking at a 2025 model of the Maverick (AWD) and can't figure out which engine/transmission combo to go for? For reference, I have an older Subaru Crosstrek with a CVT thats now giving me issues. To fix it, I'm staring down a rather expensive repair bill and this brings me to the transmission/engine combo question. Basically I like the gas milage of the Maverick with the Hybrid motor but am leery of the CVT verse the potential of long term reliability verse the standard transmission in the Non-Hybrid model. Which would you pick, 2.0 (8speed) or 2.5 (CVT)???

Thank you for your time and info.

The eCVT that uses mechanically linked gears in Ford Hybrids is nothing like the belt driven CVT in your Subaru, totally different technology. Same technology Toyota uses in their hybrids, it is very reliable. Just so you know.

anyone recommending the hybrid is going on faith at this point as there hasn't even been a review/road test on one yet

I just bought a 2024 EcoBoost AWD instead of ordering a 2025. Because there are several dealerships within a 30 mile radius, I was able to test drive the 2024 EcoBoost AWD and 2024 Hybrid FWD (both Lariat models) back to back. After driving the EcoBoost (250 hp), the Hybrid (191 hp) seemed seriously underpowered. Considering the added weight of the AWD and no added power for the 2025 Hybrid model, I am concerned that the problem is going to be even worse in the new model. I can’t even imagine adding the 4k tow package to that. It’s also a serious eyebrow raiser that they chose to lower the hp in the 2.0L EcoBoost for 2025 as well.

For these reasons (along with several others), when a 2024 EcoBoost AWD with 4k tow in the color and with the exact options I wanted showed up at a local dealership, I pounced. I’ve had it for a month now and have a little over 1700 miles on it. I’m on my fourth tank of gas, and the first three tanks averaged 34.7, 33.1, and 33.2 mpg. Yes, that’s for the 2.0L EcoBoost AWD with a mixture of about 2/3 highway miles to 1/3 city miles. All that to say, the gas mileage is going to be great whichever model you choose. It just comes down to whether you want to sacrifice a LOT of power for a few more mpg. Good luck! Whichever model you choose, you can’t go wrong…it’s a Maverick!

I think it would depend on several issues. One is how much city driving vs highway. Next how many miles on average you drive a year. Also how long do you plan on keeping the truck depending on what you have kept vehicles in the past. Yes the ECVT is different but still doesn't have the longevity that a transmission has from what I have read. Still there is always exceptions to the rule. Lastly do you like having the confidence if needing zip to pass, get on the freeway or merge into traffic? If you can answer these questions you will know which combination you want or need.

Two other things to consider if your off roading and needing lockers the tremor only offers the 2.0 ecoboost. Also if you do light off roading the FX4 package also requires the 2.0 ecoboost. Both offers off road display, hill descent or trail control (tremor), upgraded drive modes mud n ruts and sand, front tow hooks, skid plate, all terrain tires, different suspension on both the FX4 and the Tremor. There is difference such as the tremor has a one inch lift, larger tires, softer suspension but lower payload capacity and not available with the 4k tow package.

Sorry to hear about your Subaru it can happen to any vehicle. I think you will really like the Maverick. I also suggest driving both if you can find them on a lot. Yeah no 25's but the 24 has hybrid and Ecoboost. As long as your state doesn't have same or similar restrictions as California the ecoboost in 25 should be the same as the 24 model year.

While not recommending which direction you should go, you are already familiar with a vehicle that has rather limited power and an AWD system. While they are apples and oranges, the hp and torque figures sort of complicate the process. More is generally more satisfying, but it really boils down to how you intend to use it. I too have a 13 year old Forester with a four speed auto and plain vanilla 2.5 N/A engine. It's primary duty is as a winter car and I have never found it lacking for power during that season. My hybrid Maverick has more hp and torque than the Forester and it seems adequate for my use, but I am sure it would lose a shootout to the Ecoboost. It is really "horses for courses". Best of luck

Hybrid unless you want off road capability then i would go tremor Ecoboost. Towing 4k I would also go Ecoboost.

I voted for the 2.0 AWD because I have a 23 Tremor and its as close to perfect for me as it gets. I don't put a ton of miles on it and have a super duty for towing which obviously weighs on my vote! For information I do mostly rural driving have had it since Dec 23 with just under 7k miles and it hovers around 30mpg with 91 octane non-ethanol. I think you'll be happy whichever way you go!

read your post and voted hybrid.

I own an awd ecoboost Maverick with 4k towing. I would buy another, but for you a hybrid seems sufficient. if you frequently tow you can add the 4k towing package to a hybrid now, or just buy an ecoboost, which will still get better gas mileage than any other compact or midsize truck.

there are no issues with Ford's e-cvt. you can research that further if you like.

It depends on what you’re looking for from your choice. If you want maximum savings then go hybrid. If you want fun and performance then the Ecoboost is your choice. I have the AWD Ecoboost '23 and am very pleased with it. It's a blast to drive while still getting 25 mpg. That’s much better than any of my previous 2 trucks which were V8s and not as much fun. The hybrid will give you smiles at the pump up until you have to replace the battery or as it ages the mpg starts to decrease. It won’t be fun to drive like the Ecoboost.
