Alto Blue Maverick delivered January 22. Just hit 30,000 miles.

I've got numerous paint chips on my front fenders (none on the plastic bumper) and one on my fender behind my drivers side back door. Also one above the windshield. I also have a weird huge paint flake on the inside area that is hidden when the tailgate it closed and I sure as heck didn't hit it with anything there to cause that.

I'm driving the same roads/commute that I drove for 10 years in my Honda Element and the Honda when I sold it had less paint chips than my 1.5 year old Ford. Additionally the big difference is that on this car the paint is FLAKING off. On most cars if you get a rock chip/ding it has a small contact point where the paint is effected and may even cause a small dent. These don't look like typical rock chips. I feel like the paint on this truck is having some issue where even hitting a bee is causing it to flake off.

I have a oil change appointment tomorrow and I'm going to bitch about it along with a couple of other issues BUT I wanted to see if anyone else is having these issues. I know on Facebook other people have posted up about this problem and then all the fan boys with only 3,000 miles post up and say no problem and the other guys say "that's what you get for buying a $20K truck", or this is a problem with newer types of paint, BUT I've done a lot of looking around recently and not a single car in my family, my friends family, or in my entire work parking lot has these types of paint chips or as many of them on their vehicles. Most of the vehicles I looked at are older than mine as well and their paint looks so much better.

I've owned a ton of vehicles and Ford's and I can say none of them ever looked as bad as this for rock chips and especially not after 30K miles. If I make it to 100K my Ford is going to look like it's been shot with a 100 BB's.

I don't drive behind trucks. I don't tailgate. I don't live on a gravel road. I don't go off road.

I do commute 50 miles every day. I do take road trips. I do take good care of my vehicles.

SO - anyone else having issues and is this related to -

  • Build date - are earlier models having more paint chips?
  • Color - Is Alto Blue just having issues?
Interested to hear feedback from anyone else. Here are some photos of some of the worst ones - and it's not all of them. The big ones are visible from many feet away and I get sad everytime I walk up towards the truck now. I feel like with chips like this you'd hear a rock hitting the vehicle, etc. Every month I see more. I'm going to be making a video to upload to my Ford Maverick YouTube channel that shows all of them as well as comparisons to some other cars.

My Cactus Gray I've had since Sept '21 has plenty, most developing very early on. Hood, A pillar, rear quarter and similarly odd places inside the tailgate.

I've had the dealer evaluate it multiple times and they've refused to cover it every time. Mostly they just cite that they are caused by road impacts (rocks, debris) even in spots where that would mean things are taking trajectories that would seem to defy basic physics. I bought touch up paint and largely gave up caring at this point.

Cactus Gray here, XLT/FX4. Took Delivery last November, commute is FWY 30 miles each way, no serious off roading as of yet....I have numerous chips just like yours. Still need to get some touch up paint or wait for enough to have a touch-up detailer hit them all.

Are either of you considering PPF after getting the chips touched up?

im think I might get them repaired and then get ppf on the fenders. I just can’t image what it’s going to look like in 5 years.

Got my carbonized grey 22 xl mid November ‘22. Only chips I have are on my tailgate from driving with it down when my atv is in the bed. They’re not really flaking off like yours is where you can see the primer underneath, just very small “dents”. Considering ppf. I also only have 2200 miles.

I own a PPF business and see chips like that on high end cars still on their first tank of gas so I don't think its a cheap paint issue.

Some would say climate change is making rocks harder and the edges sharper. I blame the climate change activists for forcing automakers to switch to water based paint instead of acrylic.

If you plan to get it repainted and protective film applied, you will need to wait for the paint to cure first or will have out gassing bubbles under the film. Usually 30 days is enough but you will need to ask the body shop their paint needs.

I have factory ppf and the paint chips on the edges that don't get covered by the film - probably .06 or less around edges of the panels ... Talking hood edge , around headlight edges and front wheel eyebrows .... Counted about 12 chips after 13,000 miles. . considering those areas have ppf already I could not imagine what it would be like without it. Still love my Truck ....

I have an Alto Blue built in Sept 2022. Over 9k miles. One small chip on right front fender. Highway and city driving. Chip looks nothing like yours. Paint on this chip did not flake as yours did. Actually, chip is hard to see unless I look for it.

I believe this has more to do with the water based paint (on most newer vehicles) as well as the aerodynamic design of the maverick in general. I don’t think any dealer or Ford itself would consider this a warranty issue. I myself have shadow black w/49k miles and live in Michigan (continuous road construction & salt in the winter) have plenty of “touch up’s” on my frontal areas same (a-pillar/hood/fender edges). But most all of my vehicles have suffered the same chip damages throughout my 80+ daily commute over the years.

This 100%. I have an acquaintance who also owns a very high end PPF shop in the Mainline Philadelphia area (BIG MONEY). He routinely does exotics on top of Teslas and Rivians (even recently did a Koenigsegg Regera 🤯) He said what you said. It's the fact that manufacturers are using water based paints and that they are so thin and don't hold up to much in terms of projectile impacts. He owns a few cars and one being a Tesla M3. He said he wrapped it in a different color only to help keep the chips down as he said Tesla paint is FAR WORSE in terms of durability than most. So the moral? Seriously look into PPF if you don't want your truck to have lots of small paint chips.

Wow, I would be upset too. I ordered an Alto Blue Mav that was just built yesterday. I figured the extra $500 cost for that color would give you a better paint job. I also ordered the $355 coating on the hood edge and lower body.

Water Based Paint is most significant factor of less durable paint.

I too have an alto blue 22 XLT Hybrid. Took delivery in January. I have chips as well. I also reported an incident whereas I pulled the wipers off windshield, turned the key to listen to the radio and the wipers auto returned and peeled the paint of the edge of hood. No sharp edge on the wiper arm.
