"Real trucks" like the F-150s that start at 30k and top out well over double that?

So why are so many folks spending money on the Lariat, Platinum, or King Ranch when all they need is a "real truck" in the plain ole XL?
As someone who believes you can have all the car/truck you would ever need for no more than $40K, I honestly do not know. I've seen F350s listed for as much as $120K. No one needs that but the demand is there.

So this all boils down to what you need vs what you want. None of us need anything but the base XL. But we have certain things we want and so there are the trims and the add on packages. Each person has to decide what is value added for them. The sweet spot is getting what the heck you want and not worrying about what anyone else thinks. :)

Then I got to see a Lariat in person when my dealer had a trainer on the lot, and it completely changed my mind. It looked really slick in person and the seats were really comfortable. I don’t really know why but it just seemed to click once I got in it.
Same here. I’ve had many compliments on the interior. I really like it, it really comes together when you see it in real life.

I have two hybrid orders in different dealerships. One is for a Lariat and one for an XLT. My XLT is likely to be scheduled and produced first, but I’m really liking the interior look of the Lariat better. My internal debate now is: is the Lariat worth the $3K extra? Do any of you have insight on why you chose Lariat over XLT or Lariat over XLT?

Also, if I upgrade the trim of my XLT, has it been anyone’s experience that doing this will delay the build? I have no constraints on my build as it stands, outside the hybrid engine of course.
Ultimately it's a personal decision. For me, it was absolutely worth it, because of the additional features and refinements to the interior. I got to see an XLT before my Lariat arrived and I'm glad the jump exists between these two trim levels, because the XLT interior really left me wanting. The colors, seat material, etc. all felt very budget and appeared a bit short for life. The Lariat on the other hand feels more substantial and feels like a complete and modern vehicle. Additionally, I'm coming from a car that was 6.5 years old with leather, power moon-roof, heated seats, heated mirrors, powered seats, push-button start and included Apple CarPlay/Android Auto using Sync 3 so I wasn't going to take a step back in time. Had Ford not offered a Lariat level trim like this, I'd have probably found myself in a Santa Cruz.

There are companies out there that will install cruise on most modern vehicles for far less than $1000. Check around...
I get the cruise, just not the adaptive that my wife's explorer has, not sure that can be added that easy.

IMO, it comes down to your philosophy on how you value and spend money.

That $3,000 upgrade will cost me an additional $198 in tax.

If I pay cash, I lose another $291 in lost revenue the first year and $1,737 over 5 years since I will pull the $3,198 out of my Schwab account.

If I finance $3,198 for 5 years at 1.99%, I pay an additional $164 finance charge.

Another $3,000 will actually cost me $3,362 financed or $4,935 cash.

Not worth it to me.

The XLT trim level is the sweet spot for the Maverick. It's a good compromise for an inexpensive truck.
Having said that, I went with a Lariat.
I'm 70 and decided to, for the first time, buy a vehicle with all the bells and whistles.
Usually, I prefer a cloth interior, but I like the lariat's leather interior/colors more than the XLT interior.
I also went with the Lariat. I just sold my 2018 F150 XLT, and ordered the hybrid Maverick. I just retired this summer and 'wanted' the bells and whistles. Being 6'4", I did not get the sunroof, but since my truck will be sitting outside in the hot South Carolina sun, won't have to worry about any future potential leaking issues. Sync3, push button start, intelligent entry and power rear slider are all important to me. Can't wait for the Mav to get built and arrive!

It’s a tough decision. Kind of minor difference between trims and major packages, but always that one or 2 things that make it compelling.

I haven’t ordered yet as I am not a 1st year beta tester on ground up new model kinda person, though I have the big itch to on this one. Ideally I’d go for an XL if they had something like the 101a in the F150 world adding basic stuff like normal wheels, cruise, etc…but on maverick, that’s the basic XLT…but then there’s those orange accents, and after you add some worthwhile options (like the lux), you’re pretty much at basic Lariat price. Would rather have cloth but that copper is loads better than the orange, and the (fake)leather vs cloth isn’t THAT big a deal to me. Also currently having a 150 Lariat, the push button/proximity entry is a definite plus. Not a must have at all cost, but def worth a little extra for. So for me personally, what started with ideally an XL has gone to probably getting a lariat when I bite. I think if they turn out to be as modular as the 150’s are and FACTORY cruise can be added to the XL via some part add/swaps and programming asbuilt, then I’ll prob be back to XL with the intention of doing that and swapping the steelies with a set of takeoffs if they are as prolific in classifieds as 150 takeoffs are.

I don't think XLT or Lariat worth it but I view the Maverick as an economy truck DD and find great value in the $23,500 price tag. Running it up over $30k doesn't make sense to me because that's not what the Maverick is about - at least to me.

I would have liked the adaptive cruise control and the bigger instrument screen on the Lariat but I ordered an XLT because I didn't like the Lariat interior in the pictures and the rear window was a negative for me.

The other Lariat stuff like the wheels and push button start I am indifferent on.

Multiple people said the Lariat interior is better in person than the pictures but I am overseas so I can't look at one in person and ordered based on the pictures.

I like 70's vinyl and miss it.

I sat in a Lariat at the dealer, the seats were nice but not nice enough for me to cough up the extra cash.

I am going to put Rough Country neoprene seat covers on my XLT anyway. I have had them on my F150s and like the look, feel and protection they offer.

I'm sure people have addressed this, but since this comes up so often, and I did a lot of research into my decision, here you go -

A Maverick XLT (with XLT Lux Pkg), including FX4 pkg, was $31,900.

Maverick Lariat (with Lariat Lux), different wheels ($795) and no FX4 came to $36,100.

$4,200 difference, which breaks down this way (my personal thoughts in parentheses) -

Lariat adds:
  • Acoustic Windshield (quieter interior)
  • Dual Zone Climate Control (meh, 90% of the time I'm the only occupant, but nice to have)
  • Intelligent Access (fancy, me like)
  • Signature Lighting [LED]
  • 18” Wheels
  • Push Button Start (awesome in winter, no need to dig in pockets for key)
  • Power Sliding Rear Window (meh, probably won't use much)
  • Cargo bed LED [part of upper tail light]
Lariat Luxury adds:
  • 400W inverter [also part of XLT Lux] (probably won't use much, but nice to have)
  • B&O 8 speaker audio (hopefully decent upgrade over base)
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (not sure how often I'd use)
  • Wireless Charging (since you need to plug in to use phone music/navigation this one is kind of wasted)
  • Sync3 + 8” center display (as others say, hopefully you can upgrade later)
  • Evasive Steering
  • Electric Brake Boost on non-hybrid
  • Rear parking sensors
Those last three are good safety features, and might help with an insurance discount.

Honestly, the XLT Luxury is a GREAT deal.. and unless you really want some of the "ultra luxury" stuff you'll probably be happy sticking with XLT. If I had other vehicles I'd probably go with XLT to save money, but I only own one car so I'd like it to be as nice/comfortable as it can be.

The other thing not discussed often is resale value. I don't tend to hold onto vehicles for "life"; in fact my current Subaru I've had since 2015 and that's the longest I've ever had the same car. 🤪 So if I keep my Maverick for 7-10 years I want the most trade-in I could get. Higher trims help you there, though no one can truly predict by how much. (Who knew 2 years ago that used prices would approach or even surpass new vehicle prices?!!)

Can someone that has a lariat in hand confirm: does the sliding rear window open all the way or stop just short of creating a full opening? Haven’t seen a video of it completely open and thought that was weird.
