Thank you all for educating me..... without making me feel stupid. I know the technology has been out for years but I'm just ignorant on the subject.
Now to my first hybrid......
XLT Carbonized Grey with 360, floor liner, window deflector, hitch, 400w inverter. I can't decide whether to get hard trifold or hard roll up cover when I get the truck
Ordered 08/12/21.
Confirmed 08/13/21
First production date 11/22/21
Adjusted to 11/29/21
Adjusted to 12/13/21
Now IN PRODUCTION.
Very excited. It has some very big shoes to fill. It's going to replace a Toyota with 465k miles but now has a head gasket problem. I drive about 40k miles a year so I picked the hybrid for its mpg, and gas prices are just gonna keep going up.
Very excited.

Look up The Car Care Nut on youtube, he's a Toyota Master Tech, has plenty of Hybrid specific videos discussing how it all works. Don't know if Ford does, but Toyota does and the systems are extremely similar.

computer can also spin the ICE without fuel
The C-Max did that, when Hill Assist was enabled. Quite loud. The Escape switches to a resistive load (drops to 20kW once HVB is full). I expect the HF45+ will follow the Escape design. Liquid cooling makes a difference.

If you have a remote start on the fob with this always start the ICE?

Cool thanks. I'm assuming the other way too then. Hot day if the ac is on.
The A/C compressor is electric, not driven off a belt from the engine, so I believe the engine does not directly need to provide power for A/C. Of course it would just need to keep the HVB charged periodically as needed in any case.

Thanks, did not realize that. I'm hoping the remote start does something to help build oil pressure before driving. It seems like when you are in EV mode and applying throttle when the engine kicks in it's actually needed and is not just idling to build, it's revving. I would hate to have that happen dry on a cold morning.

And the main reason for me getting the lux package was to get the remote start on the fob.

As FBOV said, the 300+ volt HV battery spin starts the ICE. And here's a little more: first, it spins it much faster than a 12v crank-start could ever dream of doing, without fuel/spark. This gets the mechanical oil pump spinning and building pressure, then the fuel/spark are added in. If the HV battery has sufficient power/SOC (state of charge), the ICE will "idle" and warmup a bit before being blended in with EV side.

Interesting fact: the computer can also spin the ICE without fuel as a way to burn off excess electricity when the HV battery is full (going down a long mountain road for example). It often sounds the same as running.
As an example of this, when you have your actual/instant MPG’s displayed on the cluster and the ICE kicks in, it shows unlimited or “infinite” MPG’s because the engine is turning but no fuel is being used…..just breifly….then it displays actual MPG’s perhaps a half second layer.

When you are in EV mode the gear set through the planetary gears will let the ice run or not run at any speed and as such can run just to warm up and get ready to run under load when it's planetary gear increases the ice's required share of the load. I believe I read where the ice could start just to. Keep it's catalytic converters at optimum minimum operating temps. It should be pre oiled and not be slammed to full load while dry!

Hi Guys. Finally decided to register because I have a question.
My understanding is that the ICE does not kick in until x mph. I don't know the exact speed but when it does kick in, let's say rpm starts above 1500 i guess and on a cold start with the all the oil still at the bottom, doesn't that cause major wear and tear on the engine?
Hoping you guys could explain because I have no idea how it works.
All the oil isn't on the bottom. There's a check valve to keep the oil in the lines. Still better to let it run for a bit to normalize.

Heh. At this stage of life if I put on more than 1000 miles in a year I consider that an upward aberration from the norm.

Currently tooling around in a '94 with 55k miles on it. Used vehicle, original owner racked up the bulk of those miles.
Some of us wish we could live in Hawaii where 1000 mile road trips just aren’t a reality.

Dang I wish I could get by driving 10,000 miles a year.
Dang if you only drive 10k miles a year it will take over 20 years for fuel savings to pay for an XLT LUX unless you are coming out of an F250 diesel🤗!

Maybe the check valve is why some are complaining that when oil is changed the dip stick says there is too much oil and they check their oil in am before starting it up?
