On the Maverick Hybrid, you press the accelerator pedal down after turning the key to start the engine. This is done in instances when you want to warm the engine quicker. In my case, to warm the vehicle a little quicker before heading to work.

Sorry you guys thought I was that ignorant to actually think I needed to pump the pedal to start a hybrid.......too funny!

And to further clarify, it was early, I was tired and I am used to starting my 1973 Mach 1 with a cranky 351 Cleveland that likes lots of pedal pumping before starting.
Who told you to pump the pedal for whatever the reason? Push the button and it starts.

I mean, turn the key. His truck starts with a key. It's right in there.

After the vehicle has started. Again, you said you were hitting the gas pedal while starting the truck, not after starting the truck.

Correct. However it will help warm up the engine faster after you get into motion.

Switch to sport mode. By the time you get onto the highway the engine will be warmed up enough.

This is a fuel injected engine, stop treating it like you have a carb.

It's a Hybrid. You're only going to change the oil once a year. Twice a year if you drive a lot. Your original post doesn't mention oil changes at all, nor would it be a "regular" thing since, again, you're doing that every 10k miles with the Hybrid. Why did you even bring that up?
"Switch to sport mode. By the time you get onto the highway the engine will be warmed up enough". How o you know how long it takes to get to the highway, maybe some people live right off the highway. Also, Ford recommends not revving the engine up right away on new vehicles during break in. What do you guys have against letting the engine run for a minute before taking off?

Every way out of my neighborhood is up a hill.
If I leave in EV mode the engine will be brought on within 20 seconds or less - under load, no matter what.
I've usually landed the night before with HVB at low end of SOC%.
I Start, press Go pedal to start ICE, put on seat belt, radio good, scan around neighborhood to confirm nothing seems out of place (any high idle has usually just dropped by this point 15-25 sec), and gently get going. Oh yeah, stupid Ok presses to clear the screen.
By the time I've gotten to top if hill stop sign under 2 min, ICE is off unless cold. Gotta accelerate for busy street left turn so back on - but it got it's warm up.

But last 3-4 cars got me out of habit of pressing gas pedal BEFORE the start - all had auto-chokes.

OP you probably just hit a sequence that is intended for mechanics. At least you didn't go in to some special mode NOT meant for driving.

Why would you pump the gas pedal?
This isn't a knock on the OP, but for some reason the scene of someone pumping a pedal that just a position sensor these days, trying to start a semi-electric vehicle that turns on the ICE on when it feels like it made me chuckle.

The part that you highlighted press the accelerator pedal is done after the engine is started.
Well - after the truck in ON.
As the whole section is about the notice the engine may not be running, so not started yet.

Thanks for your well thought out response. Makes perfect sense to me.

Let me clarify a few things since some of the posters on here are confused.

Hitting the pedal like I did was an accident. I have been driving my old Mach 1 for the last several weeks. It starts totally different than the Maverick (obviously).

Some of the responses were of the nature, why would you push the accelerator? So I got off tangent and explained plausible reasons. Probably a mistake on my part as some then made an argument as to why you dont need to start the ICE.

I posted so that if this were to happen to someone else, they can see that waiting a while will clear up the issue and it will start.

Did you have heat rotary temp control set to maximum (Hi)? I find that rotating temperature control to High will kick on the engine after a few seconds automatically even if it's not that cold outside (relatively), because the engine temp sensor shows it's a cold engine, it knows it's not going to be able to pump out any heat to reach that max temp.

I think this was brought up in that thread you linked so you probably already know all that but just wanted to note that just in case. I can't recall the exact lag time before the engine kicks in automatically, so I can see the desire to hit the gas and get it going immediately when you're shiverin' your timbers.

EDIT: Are you warming the engine for its own benefit, not for the A/C heating benefits? If that's the case, why not just drive?
