And in 2005, 10 years after the national speed limit was repealed and many states had reverted to speed limits of 70-75+ mph, the Ford F-150 4.6L made a whopping 231 hp and yet still was rated to tow up to almost 7000 lbs. Even the 202 hp V6 managed to rate 5700 lbs.
hmm, could it possibly be because of the torque of each of those compared to the 2.5 hybrid?

People today are so horsepower spoiled. A F250 in 1980 with a 351 CID (5.8L) engine had 158 HP.
That represented a very dismal time in US automotive history. The muscle cars of the late 60s and early 70s were "regulated" out of existence, replaced by anemic engines and a very lame national speed limit.

One of those anemic engines was the 400 cubic inch 2 barrel engine in my parent's Ford LTD - only 172 HP, though it had over 300 lb-ft of torque at around 1600 RPM. Definitely some towing capability there, despite no high end.

But now with even more stringent regs your average Honda Civic will beat 95% of the cars from the 60's with giant V8s and I say this as a guy who took an entire drivetrain out of a 68 GTO and put it in a 1970 LeMans

The 4.2L topped out at 260 ft/lbs. Know what also makes 267 ft/lbs peak torque?
but how long can it do that under sustained heavy load? because of the conservation of energy, I believe it cannot do it continuously, I think only until the HV battery drains, and then you get a lot less output while it recharges and/or uses ICE only.

I'm looking forward to finding out when TFL and other channels tests Maverick hybrid 4k towing.

edit: and I'm aware that gpsman/TheRealMaverick asserts loudly and often that it can produce the combined peak ICE and traction motor torque at the same time indefinitely. I do not believe him for many reasons.

Ford 4.6L with 4R75W transmission regularly towing all kinds of stuff.

I'll be honest though, even with a better final drive ratio you really don't want to be trying to pull more than 4k with the 4.6L. The trans can handle it but the cooling capacity for the engine really cannot. I have taken this rig through several states and mountain passes without issues....That said I'm planning to upgrade to a 25 AWD Hybrid.

To add, anyone know how the new hybrid is magically able to tow 4000 pounds? The actual total power has not changed at all (same drive train/engine) and adding AWD doesn't increase power available. There are some minor suspension changes in the rear, but outside that, it looks like total power available wasn't the stopping block that limits the 22-24 hybrids to 2k.
there are major suspension changes to the rear and radiator

plus a new transmission.
