Is the parking brake mechanical, activated by an electric control, or does it electrically control the brake hydraulics?

@RyanS93 is correct. It is mechanically engaged via electric motors.

I believe there is an electric motor mounted to each rear caliper which rotates the caliper piston to engage. Like the other spin-in type rear calipers but with a motor to engage vs. a cable.
I believe this to be correct as well, however, there was some discussion a few weeks ago by someone who tried to do a parking brake spin in the snow, and was not able to do so, due to all 4 wheels engaging. So, I'm not sure what/if the EPB has to do with the front calipers, but apparently it does. I plan to investigate when I have it up for the first oil change in another month or so.

Just FYI...

That is interesting, I am pretty sure the front calipers don’t have any parking brake mechanism. Perhaps the traction/stability control engages the front brakes too?

My thoughts as well, but thought I'd look a little closer, and do some static EPB tests to confirm. It will be easy to do while I have it up for the oil change.

This^

Btw the truck does not like it if you unplug the parking brake motor if it's not in service mode.

I was happy to see the Maverick has a service mode without a scan tool so you can DIY rear brakes. Always annoying with some other brands that you can’t do rear brakes without a scan tool or a hack workaround.

so the procedures to get into electronic parking brake service mode is different on the maverick.

found this on the ford escape forums:

https://www.fordescape.org/threads/...tronic-parking-brake-maintenance-mode.117360/
I was able to go into maintenance mode the normal way but could not go back to EPB mode so for the 2020 escape you need to add another step....ignition on gas pedal to the floor brake switch up THEN PRESS BRAKE PEDAL AT LEAST 1 SEC then ignition off then back on within 5 sec then release the switch and gas pedal and it went back to EPB mode.
I am thinking that you have to do the extra step to get into and out of EBS mode on the maverick.

OK - so I bought a USB/OBD-II interface, plugged in to my laptop, bought the 12-month license for FORscan. Selected "Service Functions" and scrolled down to the "Activate EPB Maintenance Mode". The parking brake actuators retracted. Was then able to push the pistons back into the caliper, and complete the brake job as required.
I have not confirmed if we have that function in forscan for the mavericks yet either

Are not the front wheels held by a dog on the sun gear which will not allow the planets to spin?

EPB definitely has zero to do with the front brakes. No 'investigation' needed.
