Hood Struts

Recently ordered hood struts from Amazon, the TOYCIDFG. Okay, not name brand, and I cannot recommend these struts. Here is the deal. The hood bracket pivot point (where strut attaches) is to far forward, the struts are way to stiff, when you pull down on hood to close, the metal on underside flexes at the crease just forward of the hinge attachment. I considered that I installed the bracket incorrectly. After trial and failure I determine that you cannot install the brackets and move the pivot point. With the hood closed the strut breaks over center and pushes the hood closed. To open the hood you must overcome this tension on the closed hood, which flexes the crease in opposite direction. I determined that the flexing would eventually break the underside metal of the hood. I returned the struts. Be aware of this flexing if you have installed hood struts that the metal may be placed in a bind. Other struts may not have this issue but I highly recommend that you watch for flexing when plling the hood down. I will not be using hood struts. It sounds like a good idea, but the hood is just not that heavy.

I think, I'll keep using the prop rod.

Simple and cheap works for me.

Splurge another $20 on the Redline Tuning hood struts. No problems for me yet.

My F-150s and F-250s had OEM hood struts and I never cared for them. I didn't remove them, but it's not something I'd be willing to pay extra for. Instead I prefer the good ole Lisle hood prop. Can prop the hood lower if I need to, I dunno, check if the dome lights go off, or I can prop the hood as high as it'll go if I am working near or on the firewall.

Yes, I second that regarding MRT. Well designed. I painted the black brackets myself to match the paint color.

However, in retrospect, I open [and hopefully never during the time I own my Mav need to open] the hood so seldom that, except for "vanity", hood struts are not needed.

Don't forget hood, and tailgate are aluminum.

I am quite happy with Klutchtech struts ($40 on Amazon). They include a coil spring to pop the hood after the double pull on the hood release lever.

Does not matter if the brackets are well designed. MRT's utilize holes that already exist in the hood hinge area and in the double-wall thickness of the inner fenders.

I don't yet need help raising the hood a dozen times a year to fluids . Rear tailgate I use gravity to open and closing isn't a problem yet . I am always into keep it simple imo . Both easier than my old F150 .
