High temps mean high MPG

2023 XLT hybrid w/ comma.ai box

170 mile highway drive @ 68.5 avg speed with a 95% adjustment already added to reduce truck calculated/displayed mpg.

Atkinson engine really performs in hot temps, a/c ran the whole time at 2 amps running (give or take). Compare that to my wintertime temps, below freezing, and I get 28-29 mpg on the same drive!

Tire psi was set to 45.

Is that 45 PSI cold? That pressure is a bit high but surely is helping your MPG as well. Great numbers all around though.

EDIT: You should lower your tire pressure to the stated 35 PSI cold and see what kind of mileage you get in those temps. If it's the same or negligible, then leave it at the lower pressure for better ride quality.

Your not comparing apples to apples, run your MVERICK IN 60-70 degrees and then run it at 95 like it gets in South Carolina all summer and it will drop 2-3 mpg.

I'm actually in central NC. When temps go up mpg does up. Last week temps in 70's, same exact drive and speed, got 38 mpg.

Outside temp was mid-90's on this drive.

Yeah 45 in my garage. I notice it goes up a little on the drive. Max cold is 51 on the factory tires.

I agree, it would make an interesting test. Near as I can tell at most I'm getting a +5%-7% gain, it would be closer to 10% at 50 psi but I don't want to go that high.

It's more for experimentation than $ savings, efficiency has always interested me.

Max cold 51psi on factory tires is so that they don't get flat spots during storage and shipping.

Oh yeah, interesting to experiment for sure! I just wouldn't drive around full-time on 45 cold

Hmm - I could probably reach that mpg too as long as that speed wasn't up a decent incline the whole way.

We only drive short trips 3-5 miles and according to AI running your air conditioning at high levels (like in Columbia, SC) in the summertime gives you worse gas mileage. So going back to my previous statement I’ll expand, we don’t get much if any freezing temperatures and do so a decline for 2-3 months but we get the same decline June-August when its 95-100 everyday.

Interesting tidbit, under inflation is actually the leading cause of failures as tires get overheated and fail.

I personally have no issue with up to max sidewall pressure since tires go on any vehicle, 35 is what Ford uses to maximize ride comfort, braking distance, and efficiency. Many years ago they used to have a comfort and efficiency psi that you could choose from, at least my 30+ year old vehicle has that.

Your avg speed was 21.9 mph, super easy to get high MPGs are low speeds.

If you do the math on mine, I actually averaged 68.5 mph which means I was going real highway speeds the entire time.
