Ford Maverick Has anyone tried OpenPilot on the Maverick? PXL_20230402_145758142

It works. Need ACC or lux copilot 360 with a CCM added. You need to run the ford-devel branch for now and need an angle adapter since the windshield is too far upright. It's nice for long drives on the freeway.

What's the difference between ACC on the freeway and Open pilot?

I can't speak for the branch that the poster is using, but a goal of open pilot is to have speed control on cornering. That's something I believe bluecruise intends to do but not something ACC will ever do (because you can't determine speed requirements with radar alone). It'll also have different algorithms for predicting traffic/ merge/ lane change control. Likely going to be more refined and continue to receive updates on the OP official branch. These are just some examples but I haven't been able to do a side by side comparison myself yet so this isn't a complete/ definitive list.

Overall, you're definitely not wrong.

That said, BMW and MBZ are successfully encrypted and have been for years. Hyundai's new encrypted stuff isn't that encrypted (or maybe an insider leaked some critical info).
You don't have to as long as it is a 1 way system. You make it so they have to physically gain access to inject commands into the system. Case and sprint booster and being able to inject commands into the drive by wire throttle response using it remotely. You can encrypt commands all you want but it can't stop an overcomplicated pot voltage switch

Comma has struggled, to say the least, with injecting into vehicles that use encryption. But they're working the problem.

The Maverick is not one of those vehicles and OP runs great on it.

It appears the goal is to let you drive hands free, without the reminder to put your hands back on the wheel.

Didn't someone in this forum accomplish the same thing by hanging a 1lb weight on the steering wheel?
Yes I Did 100% - you will have to take over when it disengages like when the lines disappear in city driving. On the interstate it went for an hour or more without a problem.

What does comma add over having lane centering? I’m really not clear on the advantage.

OP has *vastly* better lane centering than stock. That's about it currently

Thanks. Something to think about I guess. It would be nice to try one out without shelling out approx $2k first. Wonder what possible future uses there might be.

In some vehicles (some Toyotas and Hyundais, and more but I don't know them off hand) it can do ACC and stoplight/sign detection. I believe the latest code for the Maverick has support for stoplight/sign detection but I am running slightly older code (January) modified to let me use the stock mount, which means I see a lot of hood in my camera view.

I finally got a new mount printed last week and VHB will be here with my mail today so I can install the new mount tomorrow, and try out the latest software this weekend.

If you're in Western WA or NW OR (I'm in NW WA and Seattle a lot, as well as PDX) I'd be happy to meet up and give you a ride.

Let me know how your new mount works out. I am clear across the country in SC. Wish I was closer, I’d love to see comma in action.

do you know if this works on hybrid models? Do you mind posting pics of your comma mounted and the file for the 3D printed bracket? That would be greatly appreciated!!!

You need to run the Ford-dashcam branch for it to work on hybrids and need an 8 degree mount for it to see properly. It works out if the box with the angle mount on eco boosts. You can 3d print one or buy one. If you're adventures, sunny pilot fork works with some slight coding changes for hybrid to work and that will slow down for turns and do all sorts of cool stuff you can tune. Sick with Ford-dashcam if you aren't wanting to get creative. Also adding ACC to a car without it isn't terrible but it's definitely a weekend project and about $700. One day to put the hardware in and one to mess around with forscan. I'm in SE Michigan and can give you a test ride if you're that way.

Comma does not work on the Hybrid. Hold on now. Their website says it is compatible with the Maverick. As such it should be a plug and play affair. It does not specify hybrid or non-hybrid. Rest assured it does not work with the hybrid out of the box, plug and and play, easy peasy, Bob's your Uncle. It doesn't as of this writing.

Some say they have it working in the hybrids. I do not doubt that they do. They're not using the stock plug and play Open Pilot software. Good for them to figure out Discord and GitHub and finding these "branches" that are said to work. I can't. Both Discord and Github are a garbled mess to me.

Since Comma and Open Pilot 0.9.4 is not compatible with the '22 hybrid I am returning my device. I'll keep an eye on the Comma website for official support for the hybrid.

For those that are curious, what the heck is a branch? Near as I can tell it is just a customized version of the open pilot software. When installing a Comma, you connect it to the Internet and enter in the https address openpilot.comma.ai (this is a "branch"). The device reaches out and installs the stock OP software. To use non stock OP software you type in a different web address (a "branch") to get the software. Good luck finding this custom software. This bit is just a little over my head.

Questions questions questions.
  1. ACC is just a fancier cruise control. Nothing more nothing less.
  2. LC or lane centering (don't confuse this with lane keeping) is just the ability of the vehicle to steer itself to keep it in the center of the lane. Simple eh? LC is hands on the wheel. It is not hands-free. You can't not have LC without ACC.
  3. Open Pilot and BlueCruise both add the capability of hands-free. To use either you must have ACC and LC.
  4. BlueCruise is just software that tells lane centering it is permissible to operate hands-free. That's it. Nothing more. The magic of hands-free driving is in lane centering. LC uses cameras to see the road. If it can see the road it works. If it can't it doesn't.
  5. Open Pilot bypasses the stock LC and uses it's own decision making algorithm. It uses its own camera, not the OEM camera. At its core though, it is constantly determining if it can see the road and steers or doesn't steer accordingly.
  6. Open Pilot is hands-free or nothing. Open Pilot with steers your car hands-free or it doesn't steer your car at all.
  7. BlueCruise hands-free requires being on a major road. Basically an interstate highway or a limited access highway. If your not, LC will still work but in hands-on mode.
