Has anyone tried OpenPilot on the Maverick?

Has anyone attempted or considered using OpenPilot on the Ford Maverick? There's no official support, but there is a fork on GitHub.

https://github.com/roxasthenobody98/phoenixpilot

There's also footage of this fork on an F-150.

There's been some controversy over whether this fork does it the right way, since it uses active park assist commands, which the official devs consider as bad practice, but the fork maintainers seem to have seen that this mode does not output too much torque as the devs had feared based on their experience with other vehicles brands.

Still, considering the self steering on this truck, I'd love to see someone get OpenPilot working on the Maverick.

PS. Discussion of this fork would be on the OpenPilot community discord, rather than the comma ai discord due to the aforementioned controversy. That discord link is as follows https://discord.gg/UnmcbWvM9k

Considering that the Maverick does not have Active Park Assist available, even as an option, it would likely have to use another way of communicating for the Maverick.

This is the first I've heard of open pilot. So other than never having to grab the wheel as long as you're paying attention to the road, what are the other benefits over Ford's ACC?

ACC? Letting the system handle the minor decel/accel when you’re behind someone at cruising speeds.

Wait what? I thought that's what Adaptive Cruise Control does right now.

After looking at the Discord, it seems that there is work being done on the Maverick with a Ford fork, though I think the GitHub may be outdated. It seems that they do require you to already have ACC to use it, but they say that radar-free should be possible after the Openpilot longitudinal control is polished.

Not sure I would like to allow geeks on GitHub have at the controls of my, as yet, under a year old truck. I work with a number of the geeks on GitHub and though they are nice enough, most can barely walk and chew gum, let alone do both simultaneously. I will wait for automated drive for a few more years, let them get the corpses handled first.

This should tell you all you need to know, it is from the github thread:

"This fork also will not work with stock hardware and requires additional hardware to be used with it.

This software is development grade, and should not be used on public roads. Use at your own risk."

Okay guys, be easy on me. Use small words and type slowly.

What does "Openpilot" do? What's the end goal here?

It appears the goal is to let you drive hands free, without the reminder to put your hands back on the wheel.

Didn't someone in this forum accomplish the same thing by hanging a 1lb weight on the steering wheel?

Oh my G-d, my post intelligence white hat hacker friend, turned expert witness. Will have a field day with this.
That it’s not completely sealed, encrypted subsystem is beyond irresponsible for Ford.

Open Pilot in some builds adds Tesla like 'Autopilot' features to cars that do not have self-drive capability using commands to the braking system and drive by wire throttle and sometimes for streering via the eletrical power steering system. I tried using it on a honda CRV for adaptive cruise control (the CRV didn't come with it standard) which it worked terribly for, and I stopped using it after a couple minutes.

Truthfully it is probably a nightmare if you were ever to use it and get in an accident, and likely shouldn't be used anywhere on a closed course for research purposes.

Edit: OpenPilot is not a L3 system, it's an L2 system that is damn good. The driver must remain alert and ready to take over at any time. ESPECIALLY for a brand new port like the Maverick. I did grow very comfortable with the system on my Ioniq, but I was *more* alert driving with it than without it. I don't want to wind up a statistic like all those Muskbois.

Welcome to almost all vehicles :) And Comma has been doing an OK job breaking crypto on vehicles that have encrypted systems.

I ran it for 32 of the 33 months I owned my 2019 Ioniq. OPs lane centering is *significantly* better than Ford's.

Yeah, I feel the world is post-sealed and encrypted worry. Never really protection long enough to be useful before being hacked. So why bother.

Overall, you're definitely not wrong.

That said, BMW and MBZ are successfully encrypted and have been for years. Hyundai's new encrypted stuff isn't that encrypted (or maybe an insider leaked some critical info).
