Yes..this really happened!!

Was away from my second set of keys. I opened the door to pick something off the ground when the wind blew the door shut with my phone on the charger still in the truck.

Had to go to a neighbor’s house and borrow her phone to call a locksmith to come unlock my truck that was sitting in the driveway running.

I do not care for the truck auto locking with the key inside the truck on my XLT.

I have since made a rule. Note to self. Never get out of the vehicle unless I have the key, the phone, or both in my pocket.

Well, that stinks. I have the keypad on mine. You could have it installed at your dealership and never have to worry again. I think a good number of us have had this happen, including myself. It's probably cheaper than 1 visit from a locksmith. Something to consider 🤔

"JDodson",
Ford did not offer
"Walkaway Auto-Locking" on 24 XLT's or any model Maverick that I am aware of.
Please,
If you can safely replicate and video it. There would be something to actually show Ford that it happens.
Example of your scenario
Showing the driver's door is unlocked the truck is running and then close your door and wait for it to Auto-Lock.
Audio on the video should be able to pick it up the click of the doors locking.

Here is Ford's response and technical service bulletin.

When I was younger I kept a basic key in my wallet. Helped out a few times. Also, back when hide-a-key boxes were a thing, those worked well also.
Have a locksmith cut a cheap metal "test key" for you.
You can still get a Hide-a-Key box. Put the metal key in that and hide it on the truck. Or stick it in your wallet.

That's why Ford should have never taken away the keypad on the drivers side door pillar!

Might be good to turn auto-unlock back on.
Drivers door opens, all doors unlock.
Because it's likely you hit the lock button yourself - you should test it.
Unlock with handle pull, but push open with other part of door.

ETA: I guess the scenario of going down driveway, stopping to pickup mail for instance, wouldn't work.

AUTOUNLOCK REQUIREMENTS

Autounlock unlocks all the doors after:
  1. The vehicle speed exceeds 12 mph (20 km/h).
  1. Your vehicle comes to a stop.
  1. You open the driver door.
Note: Autounlock operates for only 10 minutes after the ignition is switched off.

I think you meant LOCK instead of unlock.
Why would it UNLOCK the doors when the speed exceeds 12 miles an hour or 20 km/h

I ve told this story few times on this channel. I jumped out of my truck to get a hot dog at a stand, I left truck running only 10 ft from HD stand it was HOT and my dog was in truck so ac could run for dog all of sudden I hear [click] doors were locked!! vehicle was running my phone in the truck and forgot the code to keypad I never used, my dog in the truck nice and cool me outside, lucky a friend saw me and pulled over to get a hot dog he's a skinny guy am a big guy had the RR window half open my dog likes to stick his head out my buddy was able to get door open. So never leave your truck running without leaving a window open and don't forget your phone in the truck, I reset my key code with something I couldn't forget. Never leave your truck running with windows closed, and never leave your phone in truck, and never forget your code if you have one.

The keypad was an under valued item. Too many people did not see it as important. I am sad to see it go.

I have not been locked out of my Maverick it only seams to auto lock when you start to drive but I have been locked out on other cars. And I have made the mistake of bumping the lock button as i was getting out but was not locked out as someone else was still in the car.

Ford pass would help for some people using a phone to get back in. I would suggest everyone for every car have a back up plan to get in. A mini spare key in your wallet, a hidden key somewhere on the truck, or if you don't tow but have the hitch there is a locking hitch safe.

Thank you. I had no idea there was even such a thing as a hitch safe.

For my backup plan I've got the keypad. I don't use it a lot but, I appreciate it when I do.
