I still have a problem when Toyota has a truck named Tacoma, where the first 4 letters spells “taco” and the last 4 letters spells “coma”. The only food coma I want is turkey coma at Thanksgiving!
You could also ad T-R-D behind that, whoever put those letters together wasn't thinking.

I'd consider hopping over to toyota if they have good fuel economy and awd at a reasonable price.

As far as the Toyota pickup speculation goes. I'm weird, but if they did a small, very simple retro-ish truck I would have to get one. Old Toyota pickups are pretty much the only Toyotas I have ever liked.
True on older Toyotas. I’m still driving a ‘95 Hilux with 365k and won’t quit! 25 mpg, too.

Whenever the Tacoma faithful calls their rigs “Taco”, I get hungry. 🤤

Now some fun facts. I live in the Seattle-Tacoma metro area. City of Tacoma has this rep for smelling like “rotten eggs” or sulfur due to the paper mill that was present in the area. We called it “Aroma of Tacoma”.

Also, Tacoma is named after Mt. Rainier and it was known by the local Salish tribe as Tahoma.

If they can put in AWD Hybrid for $28k-$30k, drives well, nicer interior and look like a mini Tacoma/Hilux and not a “RAV-4 with a pickup bed” monstrosity, I may seriously consider it in the future. However I won’t expect this truck to be out for another few years (if they haven’t already started R&D on it) and we’d want a new truck as soon as next year. For Toyota it’s a no-brainer and they’ll sell every one they can make.

People only know what they want right now, not three years from now when product development is done. For example, I am still kicking myself that I didn't buy a BMW i3 EV w/ generator with I believe it was 22K miles on it for $13K when oil was trading negative and gas prices were dirt cheap and there were a TON of them collecting dust on lots as nobody wanted them, and yet now a similar 18K mile one is selling for over $30K per Autotrader, more than double and people are all about the EVs with crazy gas prices that probably won't end until the next election cycle. I said it would be a no-brainer as we could just sell it later at no loss as it could only go up, but oh well, water under the bridge.

I just hope the RAV4 chassis is beefy enough for it, as Hyundai said that the reason they didn't put their Santa Cruz into production on the last generation Tucson platform was that they tested it and it wasn't strong enough, so they intentionally designed the next gen from the ground up to be able to serve double-duty.

While I like Toyota quality, I've never been very impressed with their designs. I have a feeling Ram will beat them to market and has a reputation as a truck brand, so supposedly will bring a Dakota which will basically just be a on-road focused version of the existing Jeep Gladiator for the midsize category that would compete with the new Ranger, and recently refreshed Fiat Toro that's already for sale in Brazil might be made in Mexico or the US marked as a Ram 1000. I'm already familiar with their new 1.3T engine and would be happy with that since its peppy enough for such a small/light vehicle and so much better than the crappy 2.0 Tigershark they put in the Compass, and I like the interior layout already since I've long been an advocate of portrait style infotainment and digital clusters:
Loving our 2015 I/3 Rex - bought in 2020 - So fun to drive. Just terrified of anything breaking out of warranty. BMW - Bring More Wallet -

the last "mini truck" i owned was a 90 toyota i bought new.

(and a booming alpine cassette deck!)
after that the trucks got big and i was out and never looked back until the maverick

My guess is there will be an awd hybrid maverick before toyota releases a competitor. The toyota will be nice but definitely more in line with Santa Cruz pricing.

Toyota will release as awd. I'm also willing to bet the Maverick will be plug in hybrid by that time and maybe even an ev option. Not sure toyota will be plug in or ev when released.

Toyota has a solid platform with the hybrid Rav4/Venza and its even AWD.
Only question would be payload and towing; it would have to match or beat the Mav.

While those vehicles aren't on dealer lots, Toyota is making sure the dealer allocations are going to customers without ADM.
I know because my daughter is getting a Venza for sticker + tax + doc fees. Straight up deal.

Now that I've had a chance to test drive the Tacoma on numerous occasions, I have this to say about it: If Toyota is going to bring us a future mini-truck, the interior (in terms of seating position) needs to be similar to that of the Maverick. The seating position of the Tacoma is what killed all the joy for me. Felt like I was riding with my knees up to my chin, and the 4 cylinder at 159hp needs some ass behind it like the Maverick (loving my EcoBoost at 250hp. It's been a nice change.) Considered the new Corolla Cross but feared the slow engine, and with lack of availability couldn't test drive. Starting to see a few Crosses on the road now, and while the ride height seems similar to that of the Maverick, it already looks "old" for being a 2022 model. Not digging the body style which is trying too hard to emulate the RAV4.

How about a small truck with a long bed, no double cab or extended cab? I'd get rid of my Maverick for that, the Maverick I don't have yet after waiting almost a year.
