I own a 2025 Ford Maverick Hybrid XL. I am going on a 400 mile trip one way I start in Hurricane Utah going to Anahiem CA (yuk) Elevation from 2500 ft up tp 4200 ft and then down to 300 ft Speed will range from 75 to 55 MPH 90% highway.

My question is which would be smarter in BOTH gas and wear and tear on the truck.

I cannot speak for others, but I don't like ECO mode, particularly for freeway driving and hill climbing. You have to press the accelerator pedal more, it's just a pain for no real gain. I get the same MPG with ECO and Normal all the time anyway.

Eco will effect your HVAC for some power savings.

Other than that - it's merely how does the Go and brake pedal feel between modes.
And for a long highway trip, possibly using cruise control - probably not much to notice anyway.

You've hopefully tried the modes to feel the difference in pedals - because that's it.
Can you press the brake pedal carefully and stay in regen mode?
Then you just equaled Eco doing stronger regen.
Can you press the Go pedal carefully and stay in EV mode when it's even possible?
Then you just equaled Eco making the pedal feel softer.

For the hybrid, Eco is about helping YOU drive in a manner to benefit from more EV mode.
At highway speeds or long downhills - you won't see it.
For some down hills - the stronger regen that happens with Eco may be helpful compared to riding the brake pedal. But you'll end up exactly the same spot - the ICE is likely to be spun up to waste electrical charging the HVB can't take because it's full.
Except Eco doesn't apply the brake lights on stronger regen - so think about traffic behind you perhaps.

Won't matter no matter what you do.

Modes are most effective at slow speeds. On the highway, it's virtually equal.

Tow mode being the exception. Tow mode boosts RPM a bit at all speeds to give a little more pulling power.

Half a dozen one way, 6 the other. Seriously, not a big difference other than the "feel" as others have said.

Mavster....doesn't Sport also boost the RPM a bit at all speeds? Sure does give it that extra "punch" in the get up.

My commute is a lot of highway/interstate. I found Eco and Normal gave around the same mileage. Maybe a little better in Normal. As said the bigger difference is slower speeds (local roads, traffic, etc). I like Eco for the extra braking in traffic. Low mode is too much.

Just use normal for your trip unless you run into something out of the ordinary.

Actually, we have a cabin in the Az mountains and I'm an avid adaptive cruise control user and especially with any incline in ECO mode the truck will struggle to get back to set speed and it's more hassle then it's worth..At least in my experience

I would never use Eco mode in hills, especially in conjunction with cruise control.

Eco mode makes my 2024 AWD Ecoboost run like it needs a tune up.
I never use it anymore after extensive testing showed me no MPG Increase what so ever. BUT I’m not a flat lander.

With the intelligent cruise control of the Lariat, I find ECO will change how aggressively it returns to the speed setpoint in situations where the cruise has adapted to traffic and had to slow you down a little.. The behavior is slightly different from Normal to ECO mode. I also feel in ECO it will permit the speed to drop off from setpoint a bit more on hills than when operating in Normal mode. And of course, the aforementioned difference in behavior of the climate control and transmission shifting in the different drive modes is noticeable (e.g. less cooling, maybe a big more engine lugging on a big hill)..

Not sure you'll see much difference in fuel savings with your XL on nearly all highway driving operating in ECO as opposed to just staying in Normal.

I use ECO quite a bit. But enjoy Normal mode more .

I tried eco mode for a while then normal mode but I can't tell any difference in MPG or performance so why push the mode button three times?

I use Eco on the highway because of the less aggressive acceleration in Cruise Control. Much closer to how I drive myself. Does it save fuel? Very hard to say, probably a very small amount, difficult to measure.

For most driving I can not tell the difference, only as I said when cruise control is adjusting speed do I notice anything.

I can only speak to my experience ('24 Hybrid and I don't use cruise control)... I prefer ECO for around town and traffic; on highways (55-80mph) I prefer the SLIPPERY mode, as it allows coasting with less resistance from the regenerative system. It will also require you to use a heavier foot on the brakes, so don't be surprised...

I haven't done rigorous MPG studies but after a few months of doing it this way I do get higher highway mileage- yours may vary :)
