I agree, my hypothesis is that the ECO mode offers little to no value at highway speeds. Just having a little fun with data collection.
Also, that drive is EXTREMELY boring, so I need something to occupy my brain besides music, podcasts, or recorded books :). I make that R/T drive every two months.
Try Sport Mode next time you get bored.

Agree with the highway vs city driving comments. At highway speeds, the vehicle is constantly maintaining speed and needs hybrid mode.

I regularly use the energy coach feature in my Maverick just to see what exactly happens with various road conditions. With the help of the coach, I can boost my trip mpg from upper 30s up to 45 or more just by reacting to the the road via the accelerator to keep the mode in electric.
I filled it up yesterday and then drove about 50 miles in a mixture of 10% highway at 55 and 90% stop and go, in Normal mode. I am one of those that prefers coasting to a stop whether its at a light or in traffic. To my delight, I ended the day at 51.4 mpg. But even better, watching the rear view mirror at those driving bigass tanks, frantically flipping me the bird and cursing me out....PRICELESS!

Last time I did a 4 hour straight highway drive at 75mph, I got about 37mpg, it’s less than my 50mpg in town driving, but I’m not mad at 37 either
Yeah, when I get depressed about *only* getting 36-37 mpgs @ 75 mph instead of my usual 45-50 mpgs around town, I remember my Outback 2.5 only got 27 mpgs on the highway at 75 mph. So I'll take it....

The best way to improve mileage on my 2024 Maverick Lariat eco-boost is to turn off the air conditioner when it’s 100° but I’m going to pass on that

And I just did the same 4 hour drive yesterday, recorded it for this thread

It can degrade your AC - but if already at temp - nothing to improve.

It can improve regaining speed in cruise control calmly - but if not happening much - nothing to improve.

Otherwise it's changing the brake and Go pedal mappings to make it easier for YOU to drive more economically.

Therefore at set speed on CC - there will be little to no improvement since YOU aren't doing any input.

And since you can drive exactly the same way without the pedal mappings in Normal mode - you can make even that match.

I am like the other guy, 34 at 75 but 37 at 65. Since published hwy is 36 I would think this normal but maybe things like Lariat larger wheels and low boy bed racks hurt me a tad.

Let me be the first of many to say normal does. (At 81 MPH and under I have seen. Anyone observe engine shut off at any speed higher than 81?)

As a general rule, sport and tow mode do not shut off the engine from spinning while coasting (but often fuel is cut off).
I tested this on a road trip yesterday and can confirm my ICE stays on when I let off the accelerator pedal at highway speeds on normal mode, and it goes into electric in ECO mode.
I took a quick video but can't figure out how to post it, I'll try it again tomorrow.
Can you also try the same to see if your actually goes into EV mode?
I wonder if there's some other setting or something I'm missing to allow it to go into electric mode, or maybe something on your side?

Eco does seem to shorten the lag time to go ahead and go into EV.

Same idea can be seen at slower speeds.

In any mode you could just totally letup the Go pedal & bounce to Regen briefly, and easy back on the Go pedal and bam - into EV mode.

In Eco mode you can lighten up on the Go pedal not to regen, and if you dipped in to the blue rectangle (pre-25MY) it'll grab EV mode quickly.

Same thing in Normal mode seems to have a lag time - like are you really staying at this power request to allow the ICE to turn off. Then it'll do it.

So that's interesting it does it in coasting scenarios at high speeds too.
But in the scheme of things - is that extra 2 second difference going to change observable MPG enough?

Now if it changed the speed limit it could occur at, might allow more chunks of road it happens on - but sounds like up to 81 mph already in Normal.

I've seen going into EV only blue at 70 just a few days ago on just the right down slope - still some power applied up to 10% to overcome air resistance. I actually was surprised because usually that's about's 63 mph.

What value does driving in ECO mode actually provide? Sometimes I forget to turn ECO mode on, and I wonder how much MPG I lost during the drive.

This very small data set says that there is no difference between ECO on and off: On=34.4mpg vs Off=34.4mpg (average) . But the data set is too small to make this claim with confidence! I'll repeat this experiment next week on the same drive for a much longer distance and report back.

Edit: I forgot to say I have the 2.5L Hybrid with AWD

I have a 2022 hybrid and I use ECO mode most all of the time. I detect zero difference in acceleration. The only change is that the regen. braking when you let off the throttle is about 3 or 4 times as much as it is in normal mode. When driving on highway, you would not be likely to see any difference because it is steady speed. and the fact you saw no difference would support that the ECO does not reduce power. I average 41 mpg driving here in Tampa bay where most roads are 45 mph with long red lights. I accelerate briskly after the red light changes (in eco mode), and 1/4 throttle is enough to put me well ahead of all other traffic. I get up to about 5mph over the speed limit and then i let off the gas completely. That puts it into electric mode, and then if you are gentle on the throttle, I ride on battery power for a long time until I need to accelerate faster or until the next light. If I do real short trips, the mileage is worse because the engine will stay running more until it warms up. I have had up to almost 50mph when I avoid short trips and no big highway running. Local trips like 5 to 10 miles can get the best mileage. I love the Mav and the mileage it gets!

I think HeyBales summed it up.

Eco may drop to EV about 2-3 seconds sooner. But Normal will. Want to speed up Normal Mode dropping to EV? Tap the brake barely enough to light the brake lamps without really slowing you down.

The first takes longer.
I agree the truck is kinda asking "Are you sure?". Additional attempts subjectively seem quicker.

Any experiment to compare ECO on/off must maintain minimal variation in all the other driving conditions, which isn't easy to do.

Last week I drove between Detroit and Montreal, along the 401 through Canada. 10 hours. The highway is practically straight and flat the whole way. Point east and drive. Traffic is really bad when I hit Toronto, but very light for hundreds of miles (or kilometers) before and after Toronto.

So I took data for a 150-mile segment that was extremely straight and flat. 50 miles with no ECO, then 50 miles with ECO, then 50 miles with no ECO. I had my adaptive cruise set to 75 mph, and avoided lane changes unless I absolutely had to. A/C was on, fan set at speed 2. With only three 50 mile segments, my data set is limited. I'll make this drive again in a few weeks, and I plan to take data for a much longer segment, and then run a paired t-test to see if ECO makes a statistical difference.

My preliminary data is below. With only (3) 50-mile segments, and attempting to keep all conditions as consistent as I could, the best MPG was with ECO OFF. However, that was also the segment with the least traffic (low adaptive braking) and no rain.

This very small data set says that there is no difference between ECO on and off: On=34.4mpg vs Off=34.4mpg (average) . But the data set is too small to make this claim with confidence! I'll repeat this experiment next week on the same drive for a much longer distance and report back.

I drove to/from s/e VA to bowling green KY last week. while I didn't make a record of Econ on/off, I really didn't notice any difference. mostly highway miles and quite a few hills.
