Hi,

Here in Canada, we'll be switching from snow to summer tires in a couple of weeks.
I would like to use that opportunity to change the brake fluid.
Has anyone done it by themselves?
Any pits and falls one should be aware of?
Is the technique any different than pouring in new fluid while a buddy pumps the brakes until the old fluid is fully purged?

Cheers!

Invest in a quality vacuum bleeder (pump or air compressor attachment) and do it unassisted, and have a quality tool for life...

Good luck

I get the value of good tools but I have a quality friend : we like to do basic car maintenance together on our cars.
So, will the classic pump & purge technique work on the Hybrid Mav break lines?

At 3.5 years and 60,000 miles my fluid is clear as water. What color is yours?

Hybrid is a totally different animal as its brake by wire
To bleed it properly you need a pressure bleeder & FDRS to initiate the procedure
Last one I did I went through about 4 liters of fluid after a HCU replacement

Nope. Hybrid is completely different. The long and the short of it is, you need a scan tool with bidirectional communication and brake bleed function capability. The Maverick may have a maintenance mode that can be activated without a scan tool but I am not sure.

The reason for that is the hybrid's brakes are electronically actuated (with a mechanical failsafe, which will only activate the front brakes), so pressing the brake pedal won't automatically force fluid out. This is because the vehicle decides how much regen braking versus mechanical braking to actuate with a brake pedal press.

The good news is it basically is a one-person job. When I do brake bleeds on Priuses or other Toyota hybrids, it's basically...attach a jumper pack to the 12v battery, key-on-engine-off, set scan tool to brake bleed, and it just tells you which wheel to go to. When ready to bleed, hit "bleed" and it commands the various pumps and solenoids to activate as needed, and cracking the brake caliper bleeder causes fluid to pump out; no brake pedal pressing necessary.

The fluid can be changed from the reservoir through wheel cylinders with a vacuum bleeder, like normal. You just won't be swapping out the fluid in the electric brake booster. Remove the neg. battery cable to ensure the brakes don't actuate, and pump the pedal before hooking it back up.

Cheers.

Humm Anyone have a service manual for hybrid? I have the 22 eco boost pdf one BUT not hybrid version,. . I normally use the vacuum brake bleed kit I have and just suck the fluid out at rear calipers then front. BUT since hybrid mav uses some electric pump setup might not work?? I wonder.

I might have to buy the service manual for hybrid at 3 year point as that is when I ALWAYS flush brake fluid. YOu crazy after 3 years as that is considered the longest you want to wait.

ANYONE have the service manual for hybrid??? I here a lot of OPINIONS here but would like what Ford says to do. Maybe that one guy who is a Ford tech can reply. I don't remember his name

For sure some misunderstandings in these comments.
Perhaps the end result is correct - but still.
I'll try to remember to look up in the service manual the hybrid.

If you are NOT moving, as would hopefully be the case doing a brake job - there is no regen.
There is brake pressure to each caliper brake line.
Yes this is in Acc key position to get a reading from the OBD, but you can watch the calipers move with key Off also, all four corners with brake press. True, very little, so maybe I was seeing things, but I don't think so.

Well that doesn't help much That is all it shows? I have the service manual for the 22 ecoboost and it shows a few ways to bleed the brakes.

This is Scan tool needed. I hope not I don't even own the forscan thing either. I wonder if it could be done with forscan which I still would need to get then .

Forscan Lite for iOS or Android has it in their list of services also.
OBD adapter (recommended one), and $7.
Can use adapter in other cars - with other apps to scan them to some degree too.

Thats it from the manual, the instructions are in FDRS as to when to open & close each bleed screw on a specific caliper.
During the procedure it will cycle the pump & all the dump & isolation valves in the ABS unit.
Its final test is to see if it can ramp up pressure in a specific amount of time.
If it doesnt like the pressure rise time there is air still in the system & it starts all over again
You dont pump the pedal at all, the ABS unit does everything
The pedal is similar to the gas pedal...accelerate by wire & brake by wire
