I changed my ATF for the first time at 10K miles. It was starting to get dark, but it was nowhere near as dirty as @mavhopefull showed in his video at 30K miles.

My understanding is that the total fluid capacity of the 8F35 transmission including external lines is about 11 quarts, and I would think it might be slightly more than that for those of us that have the supplemental transmission cooler (FX4, Tremor, Lobo). If that is accurate, the drain and fill procedure only replaces about 1/3 of the fluid. Since we're only "diluting" the used fluid with fresh fluid by replacing 1/3 of it, some Ford transmission techs have suggested doing the drain & fill procedure 3 times instead of just once.

Of course use your own judgement. I think I will probably just do one drain & fill per year. I run about 10-12K miles per year on my Maverick and I've stocked up on a couple of the $25 5-quart jugs of ULV from RockAuto.

Good point. I just completed another transmission fluid service at 60k, and the fluid was just as dark as it was at 30k. With the amount of towing I do, the ATF is clearly breaking down more quickly under load. I’m considering moving to a 15k service interval to keep the fluid in better condition and reduce heat related wear.

One tip I read here was that the air filter housing doesn’t need to be removed to access the fill vent hole. That’s true, but when I tried it, the fluid struggled to flow in since it couldn’t vent properly and air bubbles built up. If anyone has found a better workaround, I’d appreciate the input. It saves some effort not having to pull extra parts, but the fill process was far from smooth.

Removal of the air box is fairly painless when the alternative is leaving it in place and messing with all kinds of weird angles to get the clamp off, imo.

I agree with @bgn. The air box is so easy to remove from the Mav, I'm just going to keep removing it. Twice that is, once for filling and another for topping off as needed after heating up the fluid. I use an OBD reader to ensure it's up to temperature before reading the level, and it takes quite long drive to get to the 185 degrees minimum required for checking.

I do skip one step you showed--removing the top of the air box. I just loosen the clamp, unhook the sensor and its clip, pull the two clips for the snorkel, pull out the snorkel and yank the box.

Just did my 1st Drain & Fill on my 2024 at 23,337 miles when I changed my oil as well. Took 4.5 qts of Mercon ULV, process wasn't too bad.

Just wish there was a transmission dipstick, vs having to remove the ds wheel to check proper level. I purchased a 1 gallon container of Mercon ulv transmission fluid from partsgeek for 47.00 shipped.

I plan to do it again around 40-45k miles.

Any reason to not replace the drain plug with a magnetic plug ?
