" Panics the wife somewhat. "

Is there enough upside to make it worthwhile?

Has anyone else had the collision assist come with not a car in sight? I was approaching a well lit intersection, while the highway was dark and pretty empty of traffic. I have 2024 XLT hybrid. It scared the you know what out of me! lol!
I had a driver slam on their brakes and my collision assist came on.

Not yet - pretty sure I put it on Med sensitivity after the 1st alert, which was someone doing a hard brake and turn, but they were already into the turn when it went off.

Not sure why so many people can speed & weave & bob but can't seem to go thru a corner at decent speed. I don't mean in general, I've watched the same drivers do that.

Simple, because they're assholes.

Mine has alarmed several times, but not with nothing in front of me.
Leaving it active though...
During a recent trip from upstate NY to FL, I was in SC at night (around 11pm) on I-95. White pickup passed me and changed back into the driving lane. Suddenly swerved hard to the left. There was a dark sedan with one dim tail light going about 10mph in a 70 zone.
Detection system alarmed and braked leaving me enough control to jump into the left lane and avoid him. If not for that detection and braking, it would have been a much closer near-miss if I had been able to miss him.
Needless to say, stopped at the next rest area to address a slight wardrobe malfunction.

I'll let it scream when it wants. It works.

You mean the "Hey lookout! You're driving in Pittsburgh and facing the sun!" alarm? Yes.

No idea how the blasted thing works, but I drive a lot of winding roads, and it seems to think cars in driveways are heading straight for me, especially whenever I'm facing into the sun. So about 1/4 of the time on my "fun" work commute route (over the hills for 17 minutes, as opposed to driving along the river 15 minutes), and occasionally in the various hillside neighborhoods in and surrounding my city. Panics the wife somewhat.
I drive a slightly winding road to get out of my neighborhood and yeah sometimes if there is a car parked along the side the collision warning will go off.

I have had my maverick for three years, so far it activated for:
A deer that jumped on front of me
A piece of large cardboard that blew into the highway
Random cars braking too hard at intersections

I am ok with letting it's do it's purpose in all the above scenarios. Combined with lane center/assist and the co-pilot package, it's pretty good.

So it actually really does work for pedestrians?
Not 100% sure about that. The brakes didn't apply, but the warning went on momentarily. Perhaps the chap was in just the right spot for the camera.

In my opinion, all these features are worth every extra penny.

You can adjust the sensitivity

On my 2023 hybrid with 34K miles I just had this happen as I was closing in on a vehicle still over 1/8 miles ahead at dusk somewhat foggy. Scared me because thought maybe a deer or other hazard. Don't think I would have reached the other vehicle for several seconds.

When I’m on a multilane or a curved mountain road and it sees a car in the other lane but it’s directly in front of me because the road curved it panics.
I dialed it down because of this.

Then there’s the other thing. It see’s the multiverse. So when you see nothing it’s braking for a Dragon or a Ghosty Apparition. :’P

You can set the sensitivity to low medium or high. I have mine set to low and when I’m driving somewhat aggressively I will get it to trigger. I’m going to see if there’s a way to actually disable it such as by putting something in front of the camera etc. etc. just the scare when this goes off alone can cause an accident he should not be legal. Yes I’m entitled to my opinion I do not feel that these have proven themselves nearly as valuable as seatbelt and antilock brakes and perhaps airbags. If someone has some hard scientific data on this please share.

The collision avoidance system definitely needs to be disabled when going through any automatic carwash that uses a drag chain or conveyor belt system - your collision avoidance system will activate locking up the wheels on your vehicle causing possible damage to the conveyor system including snapping the drag chain or belt inside the automatic cash wash.

This is not a concern for automatic car washes that you pull in and place your vehicle in park and the wash equipment travels back and forth over your vehicle being your vehicle is already in a stationary position and not moving.
