Somehow I broke the stud on the vertical wall that the piston tailgate assist attaches to. As they are all essentially the same, do you know if anyone sells just the vertical wall attachment so I don't have to buy a whole new assembly? Or someone has a spare attachment that they can sell me?

I think they are talking about this :

Think they broke the ball stud off. I am pretty sure that any competent welder could fix it in 2 mins.

Not quite. The circled part goes on the tailgate. I took a photo but have been late in attaching it.

Where would I find a competent welder?

Mine broake in exactly the same place 3 months after purchase. I bought mine on Amazon from a company called Klutchtech. After several emails and a bad review from me they finally sent me a new complete kit with all the pieces. Took 2 months but I got it and they did make it right.
I now have enough pieces for a backup since I epoxied the broken piece together. I have no hope it would last long if I needed the epoxied piece but it would probably be as strong as the original piece, judging from my examination of the the broken parts.

Nope, pretty sure the image below is the tail gate (and it has the half moon cut out) the piece I circled is the part that is broken in your picture.

BTW, the the piece that you have installed is not installed exactly correctly. Notice that it is not straight up and down? Its angled too much towards the rear. If you get it welded or you get a new piece, ensure that it is straight up and down. Will prevent undue stress on the piece in the future.

You are better off just to order a new one off Amazon. They are less than 20 bucks.

WOW, I would think checking around at local automotive repair shops, etc. Especially mom/pop independent ones, drop in and ask around who locally does that. just a thought

The photo shows a bad weld. Usually a local welding shop will sneak in little repair jobs like this for beer money and you will end up with a stronger piece when you are done.

Just to clarify, the part circled in red is the proper piece to use as the upper bracket. In the photo he provided it is slightly askew and not straight up and down as required. Is this the reason for the break? I think not as that angle should not affect the strength of the weld regardless of the angle.
It is clearly the weak point on this device.
By the way, on Ebay I have found the same complete kit for $9.95. I ordered one as at that price it would give me more confidence than my epoxy fix. It also is alreasy painted black to match my blackout package.
From my evaluation they are all coming out of the same manufacturer, just marketed under different names.

It Does affect the operation, if the part is not correctly installed straight up and down. Ask me how I ruined the tailgate cable on Drivers side.

I just so happen to have an extra black painted one. I replaced the Dee Zee piston because 1. I didn't like the Dee Zee logo and 2. the piston was gurgling loudly on opening. All the pistons are basically the same, manufactured in China so I bought an inexpensive kit off Amazon and just replaced the piston. I will send it to you for the cost of shipping.

I don’t know how you managed to break it at all. The cable should have stopped the tailgate from putting that kind of load on the ball.

It didnt "break" the cable. I had said I ruined it. It just tore the rubber out sheath off. And it started to rust. It was due to me not having the tailgate latch bolt (with the TORX) tightened enough and the bracket moved; and that allowed the cable sheath to be worn away by the ball socket keeper attached to the bed.
