Unfortunately, my family and I are in South Florida bracing for impact for the storm that approaches us. I guess on the bright side, we're on the east coast as oppose to the west. But we're still going to get devastating impacts such as damaging winds, power outages and potential storm surge. According to the latest forecast, it is slated to strike as a category 2 hurricane when it makes its way through central and eastern Florida. As if the west hasn't had enough to deal with after experiencing Helene less than two weeks ago. It's like 2004 all over again with these back-to-back storms. For safe measure, we're parking our vehicles on the side of the house which has a high elevation which will keep the cars away from potential flooding. Crossing my fingers for the best.

They're evacuating the Gulf coast, not the Atlantic coast. I'm stuck in the middle here in Orlando. No storm surge here. :)

Edit: Now I hear they're evacuating the Atlantic coast in Volusia County, but that's not in the south part of the state.

As crazy as it sounds, I have seen photos of people buying thick plastic sheeting, driving onto it, and then bunching it up in a bow with rope or zip ties. Making a "plastic wrapped vehicle" that will probably float away before it lets any water in. Just an idea. Would also do a TINY bit of protection from flying debris. At least the small stuff.

Please, everyone in this wicked path stay as safe as you can, it’s not a tiny twister like we get here in Canada! Thinking of you all! 🇺🇸 🇨🇦

People are trying to evacuate. Problem is when you evacuate, you are buying things to survive for a few days and filling up your vehicles with gasoline. When thousands of people are trying to do that at the same time, gas stations run out of gas, stores run out of supplies and roads become clogged for days. As a result, some opt to try and stay put.

When living in an area like this especially during hurricane season your fuel tank should always be full & two 5 or 6 gallon cans full in the garage, it can put you a couple hours ahead in an evacuation.

Yes, good luck and hope you get all your needed supplies.
Here in Greenville S.C. we were without power for 10 days and we're only a 15 minute drive from downtown Greenville.

Be prepared, and don't assume you can just get what you need afterwards. I had a small Harbor Freight 700w generator that was just big enough to run the fridge but was not designed to run a week non-stop. Fortunately we didn't lose cell coverage so after a few days I ordered a bigger Honda generator from Amazon which showed up the day after my HF generator died. Had to walk to the end of the street to meet FedEx as we still had trees blocking the road 5 days after the storm.

attached is a pic of the storm at it's peak, when a neighbor's tree fell across both our driveways, and my Maverick toting 12 gallons of gas. The truck did everything I need and more when there were 2 hour lines at the gas station and I had topped my tank off before the storm. All that gas was just for the generator.

Same neighbor lost his house to a tree that came thru his bedroom and crushed the bed he had been laying in 15 minutes before.

Dr Levi is the BEST !
This channel is my second stop after checking NHC. I am so thankful for the non-hyperbolic discussion that focuses on facts and models. Those of us who have lived in Florida for a long time know the dangers of hurricanes, so we don't need the clickbait warnings that dominate the media. We wants the facts and possibilities so we can be prepared the best we can. Thank you.
I would want Dr Levi to be my professor if this was the genre I was studying

If you are in a vulnerable area and there is a large parking structure nearby - move your vehicle to a high floor of the parking structure toward the middle of the parking structure and it will likely save your vehicle from damage / flooding
