Beware the delicate Maverick hybrid

Five weeks ago, my wife had a minor collision with an SUV that caused some cosmetic damage to my left front bumper. (It caught the right rear bumper of the SUV in a glancing blow.) No dents, no major scratches, and the no air bags deployed. It cost all of $80 to buff away some rubber residue and apply some touch up paint. Fast forward to last week, when I noticed a small puddle on the garage floor, and later that day the truck stalled and was towed to the Ford dealer. They informed me that the high voltage radiator (it cools the high voltage battery) and some grill shutters have suffered impact damage, which will cost $3,258 to repair. I'm really surprised it took a month for the damage to manifest itself. And, if I had known the hybrid was so fragile, I would have opted for the Eco-boost.

Wow. Agree, strange it didn't manifest earlier. However, the EcoBoost also has "delicate" components on the front, namely the intercooler. Hope you are back on the road soon.

I just had this same problem but from a rock apparently….. 2200 bucks for a freaking radiator that is basically unprotected!!!

That's crazy. If anything ever happened to the radiator on my Ecoboost, I could get a new one for a few hundred bucks and install it myself in under an hour.

That's just one of the many reasons I sent with the Ecoboost over the hybrid.

Crush zones protect the occupants better. Which should translate to lower medical claims.
In an auto accident, medical claims often end up costing more than property damage, though this can vary widely depending on the severity of the accident and the extent of injuries and damage. While property damage, especially to vehicles, can be substantial, the costs associated with medical treatment for injuries, including emergency care, hospitalization, rehabilitation, and long-term care, can quickly escalate into very large sums.
The crumple zones should in theory SAVE insurance companies money VS Medical Payments.

Glad I did my research and decided not to buy a hybrid. I'm hearing mechanics talk about them being rough on the gas engine, plus the added cost and weight.

Make sure you read the comments prior to yours for expanding info on what would have been damaged on the EB if it had been there. Sounds just as expensive.

My friend had a BMW X3 M Competition. One day she ran over a clump of frozen slush that had fallen off a mudguard from the car ahead. Her dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree ... broken rad, broken intercooler, broken oil coolers, etc, etc. It caused $10,000 in damages and the truck spent 3.5 months in the shop for repairs. Oh well ...

I should have explained myself better, I'm sure the EB could have been damaged as well from being hit, I was referring to what some expert mechanics are saying, they are seeing problems with the gas engine caused by the battery switching back and forth. I chose the EB for my 2024 Lariat; I don't like the idea of riding around with a large battery sitting underneath me. Just me, we are individuals and have different likes and opinions, Right?

I chose the EB for my 2024 Lariat; I don't like the idea of riding around with a large battery sitting underneath me. Just me, we are individuals and have different likes and opinions, Right?

The hybrid drivetrain is just a bigger newer Prius, and those have been fine for decades.
EDIT: I wouldn't go off-roading the hybrid without some serious rock shield for the battery pack.

Horse and buggy people couldn't believe that folks wanted to drive around with a large tank of flammable/explosive gasoline.
Especially when it was mounted right under the bench seat. As shown below.
I guess it the same with batteries now.

That's just one of the many reasons I sent with the Ecoboost over the hybrid.

I would expect it would be a few hundred to have software checked out after you installed the new radiator. What about the bolts that had to be removed to replace. Were any of them one time use? When my 22 hybrid had driver's side rear fender was replaced the gas filler had to be removed to be installed in new fender. The bolts are one timmers and Ford does not sell them individually so body shop had to purchase the "Assembly" which was something like $250-$300 don't remember. It also cost $125 to check the rim to see if it was still in specs. The initial insurance estimate was $5800.00. after all the unseen the total was $12,722.28. plus 7 weeks car rental. Plus $2140.00 from at fault drivers insurance for Diminished value. Something was bent and had to be welded which required bedliner to be resprayed = flatbed tow both ways to approved sprayer $750.00 which included body shop markup plus $695 for the respray.

Do you have any links for articles where mechanics are seeing problems with the 2.5? That engine has been around for decades and is extremely reliable.

Bunch of articles on the 2.0 EB and direct injection causing the carbon build up on the back of the intake valves, as well as turbo failure, fuel dilution and coolant leaks - and that doesn't even touch the 8F35!

As far as the battery goes? It's very small - smaller than a suit case...

I've never seen a car or truck with the gas tank mounted underneath the seat. You are aware of Tesla batteries catching on fire? I guess I can't have an opinion without starting a firestorm?

Same with the post I made about oil change frequencies, I get my info from experts that know what they are talking about. One I trust is Lake Speed Jr, he and his father worked for Henrick Motor Sports for decades. On YouTube, he's the (Motor Oil Geek}. Anybody serious about the most important maintenance for your engine should look him up.

I'm sure they were talking about the hybrid motor attached to the engine, or is it? The starting and stopping as needed. Same with the auto stop on the other vehicles. I hate it on mine, I hit the off button every time.

My 2022 hybrid lariat is one of the vin numbers that has the 10 year/150k miles warranty on long block replacement due to the possibility of defective parts. There are several threads here.
