While setting at a light with foot on the brake i tried turning the wheel to check the effort with the engine off. To my surprise the engine restarted. Tried a couple more times with same results. Only took a couple degrees of movement of the wheel and moderate force. No idea why its setvup this way or what sensor would be triggering the restart. Found no mention of this behavior in the user manual. Another Maverick puzzle.

Yes, there are various conditions under which the engine will restart. The most obvious of those include:

  • Throttle application
  • Needed to maintain climate settings
  • Torque to the steering wheel
As you noticed, the steering wheel locked up when the engine was off. That's because power steering requires the engine to run. When the system detects you're trying to turn the wheel, it'll kick the engine back on so you can do what you need to do.

Both powertrains use electronic power assist so the engine doesn't strictly need to be running to provide power steering like old hydraulic assist systems.

Then why is there no power steering until the engine kicks back on?

Electric power steering is a high power load. You would not want to run it off the battery for any period of time. It's also safe to assume that if you're moving the steering wheel, you want to go somewhere.

I have noticed something similar but it seems to be the accessory motor turns on but the ready to drive mode is not active.

Engine actually starts when you let off of the brake in anticipation you will be apply the gas soon.

That sounds like a hybrid thing. I have the EB.

Sure, if you don't use Auto Hold, releasing the brake pedal does the same thing as pressing the accelerator pedal. :)

The auto start / stop is also tied to the power steering control module. You can disable that trigger via forscan.

From the service manual. I am paraphrasing here.

During normal operation the auto start stop system may not stop the engine under the following conditions:

The A/C, heat or defrost settings are ON
The battery has a low state of charge or is below approximately 5°C (41°F) or above 60°C (140°F)
The maximum engine off time is exceeded
The engine operating temperature is less than 60°C (140°F)
The gear selector is in the PARK, REVERSE, NEUTRAL or SECOND GEAR position
Initial vehicle speed of greater than 4 km/h (2.5 MPH) and less than 2 seconds has elapsed
The vehicle is on a steep road grade
Elevation is above 12,000 feet (3,657 meters) approximately
The CPP sensor indicates the clutch pedal is not fully released

On other Ford vehicles the road grade feature for auto start / stop is tied into the PSCM modules. It should be under the following address in the PSCM module.
PSCM
730-03-01
xxxx-xxxx-**xx
** = 01 = start / stop enabled and road grade enabled.
The other values should be
** = 02 = start / stop enabled and road grade disabled
** = 00 = disabled

I have noticed this in the fast food drive through, steering wheel straight engine turns off, if it's turned at all engine stays running.

It probably thinks you're going to be making a turn and will need a faster response time. At least that's the rationale I've seen in other threads.
