In before the lock.

Are we going to repeal traction control, airbags, seat belts, crumple zones, etc next? All those make cars expensive.

That darn gov't can't mandate my safety.
Don't tread on me, bro.
Gov't mandates are lame. I sure love how much mpg my EB ICE Mav gets, though.
I'm not a hypocrite, you are.
etc, etc
i'm glad they got rid of "air pumps" and the stupid lines that ran into the exhaust manifolds in the early 70's Dumb idea to try and save the planet that didn't work and maintenance headache just getting spark plugs out! If I had a dollar for every one of those pumps that I "fixed" (or deleted) I could own a 747 flying me around the world. The scientists/engineers/ smart guys many times get it wrong. I have many more examples of government stupid, but it would require about 500 trilllion gigabytes to write it all out!

You know it's an unpopular feature when questions about it are primarily how to disable it.
The other clue is its acronym:
ASS.
Normally not descriptive of something intelligent. ;)

Anytime you are stopped when you won't be moving at a long light or a railroad crossing, etc., it's pretty easy to turn the car off and restart it. I've been doing that for years.

It seems insane to me to expect an ICE powered vehicle to immediately start and go in an intersection without ever having a problem. Seems like a T-Bone waiting to happen.
Sometimes it does.

Not a feature I would miss for an ICE powered vehicle, but it works flawlessly in a hybrid.

My 2022 Escape had that, but since it only got used a couple times of a week, vampire current kept the battery low enough that Start/Stop would disable itself. I didn't complain, though it's sooooooo seamless on my hybrid Mav that if it's actually in hybrid mode instead of battery at a stop I'm irritated.

We have long stop light intervals.
Effective system cycle lengths in Las Vegas are typically 120 to 180 seconds in length.
In extremely hot weather 110°+ 🏜our air conditioner compressor does not stop running when the engine stops. It keeps on running as normal getting power from the traction battery.

Auto S/S was not mandated, but was encouraged by emissions and fuel economy standards. So nothing has really changed unless we're rolling back environmental regs which, IMHO, is not a win. I do understand the frustrations with the system in pure ICE vehicles as it can be jarring. With my hybrid, the ASS is a feature, not a bug 😄

I seem to recall an article in one of the major car magazines years ago that stated after you consider the cost/emissions to build a 2nd starter motor and battery, a typical ice vehicle would need to ”stop” at a light for 18,000 hours to save enough emissions from the tailpipe to make this a break even for the environment. If the vehicle would require a 3rd starter motor and battery, add another 18,000 hours of sitting at a stop to break even.. Another case of politicians making laws thinking they were saving the planet without actually researching the actual effect of the stop/start feature.

I heard someone call it, "getting an environmental participation trophy" by mandating this. It helps very little environmentally and to me, it is as annoying as hell when I feel my car basically shut down while I'm at a light. And there's no one going to convince me that turning my car off and on 50 times during one trip is good for the car. I get in, put on my seatbelt, and hit the A in the circle button. It is better know to me as the A-hole button. :ROFLMAO:

I never understood why people dislike this feature.
I don't like it because it introduces a safety concern - over 50 years I've had three accidents where the idiot behind me didn't stop - even attempt to - when I was in front of them at a light or sign. After the 3rd incident I always check my rear view mirror when stopped. I've also avoided 2 what would have been sure accidents by being able to evade the oncoming idiots by quickly and safely either going thru the light/sign or making a quick move 'over there'. The start/stop introduces a lag time, time that delays car response, even though it's only a short duration it's enough so that my quick maneuvers would have been delayed likely resulting in me getting run into again.

So as I understand it, this "feature" was developed and implemented not as a result of a mandate but rather as an engineering solution to improving overall fleet level standardized emissions tests where the engines sit at idle for some period of time as part of the test. It created a way for manufacturers to make overall measurable decreases in CO2 emissions in order to stay in line with the targets.

I think it's fair to say that it was essentially designed to game the tests but, perhaps on a bigger scale, may have provided some secondary benefits like overall reduced emissions or fuel savings.

On a personal note, I have never cared for it and even though I gave it a go with my Maverick, I didn't see any noticeable fuel impacts. So, yes, I used Forscan to disable it.

On my 25 Maverick, I have disabled the auto S/S using ForScan.

But, couldn't you accomplish the same thing by limiting the vehicles top speed? Most interstate speed limits are 70. So why can certain vehicles go over 100?

What if I need to evade a bad situation? I don't want to be limited to 80 MPH.

🤷‍♂️

I have 2 cars with it and hit the defeat button as soon as I get in the car. It can be abrupt if you are stopped and engine is off and you go too fast from break to gas in traffic for example. You end up on the gas before the engine starts, and when it does start, it is then very abrupt and assuredly not good for the drivetrain. Savings in fuel is largely negligible and not even measurable based on my experience when first using it.. The folks who pushed for this should give up a home or two, the yacht, and drive a hybrid, and we would make out much better. Leave the peasants alone and practice what they preach.
I have never had this happen........... Of course, I often have the auto hold on so my foot is not even on the break, oops brake!!! Even without the auto hold I have never had it surge forward. I am going to have to try to get it to surge forward tomorrow; I am not sure that is possible.......

Love the feature; just seems to make sense to me, but maybe that is just me............. At least after yesterday, I now know that it really does not help the environment!! ;):crazy: Just another govt reg treading all over my personal freedom.............

when stopping at a stop sine immediately release the breaks then reapply and your engine will stay running.

The one thing it does do is make owners eventually buy new batteries or starters, or both. The most nagging issue is drivers who don’t want ASS have to switch it off each time get in, start their vehicles. Of course there are kits to nullify this function, but an added expense here.
