I have only used premium in mine. Mine is a 23 hybrid. I know the argument that you are throwing money away using higher octane gas than what it says in the manual, however I have also been told that running premium gas does help with keeping the vehicle running better long-term. A mechanic told me years ago you should at the very least use premium from time to time as the gas is usually "cleaner". Not sure if this is true, but I have a 97 z3 that I have only put premium in too and have never had issues with fuel injectors building up gunk or needing a fuel line clean out. Again, take it for what you will, I am a believer that using premium gas in general is better for the engine, and no I don't mean from an increased HP standpoint (been told that it does not help in that department going higher octane than what is recommended). Just that it keeps fuel line cleaner than the low grade stuff.

I’ve been told a lot of stuff years ago too, 20-30 years ago about how to and what to, 2025, times have changed. Thank God!

91 - 93 Premium only '24 Eco Boost. Switched out the Conti's for Defender 2"s and recent trip went from 31+ MPG to 35+ MPG. That was on the Mav's computer read out.

why spend the extra money on fuel that the vehicle was not engineered to use? Placebo effect of making you think you're getting better mpg or the engine has "more power" or will "last longer"?
But it IS engineered to perform better on 91 octane. The engine has knock sensors that compensate when the octane is lower, and it does cause the engine to produce less power.

I run my 22 non hybrid on 87 reg fuel. Hearing people get more horsepower and better for engine to run on high test. Any opinions?
I just use Top Tier 87 gas. No problems.

From the 1/4 mile 93 vs. 87 Lobo thread we already know the truck has run a faster 1/4 on 87 in the same conditions:

Unless octane is preventing ignition timing or boost being pulled back, it does nothing. The EB 2.0 in the Maverick is already detuned vs. other 2.0 installs, probably to help the 8F35 survive and why octane increase did bupkis on those 1/4 runs. If you tune your engine, results will vary once you increase your cylinder temps and pressures.
Dragy runs under uncontrolled conditions is hardly proof of anything... "Same conditions" weeks apart?

Compared to a complete lack of evidence to the contrary I have nothing more compelling to view. Where's the beef? As they say.

I guess neither of us have compelling evidence then, and certainly no "proof". Because I can't provide data to the contrary doesn't make yours accurate. Dyno pull data under controlled conditions would be compelling, and proof if repeatable.

Anything is more compelling than nothing, I'd say. Dragy is used a lot, and I'll take accelerometer data over hot air 10/10 times. I greatly appreciate a member providing that kind of data personally.

It's interesting data provided by a member, but it's hardly conclusive, and that's the only point I'm expressing.

Do we have all of the data points showing the same conditions to go along with the times? And what data is included? Are the conditions so close that we can assume the variance in results is due solely to differences in octane?

Hot air is fine as long as it's controlled to be the same for each run.

No need to spend the extra money.
The book says 87 so that's what I use.
Never had problems with any vehicle using the recommended octane.
I run strictly 87. Never had any pinging. Tried 89. But couldn’t tell any difference in performance. It eats Teslas on 85 oct

Nothing but Costco regular for me. My hybrid seems very happy.
