This happened today. I accidentally spilled my drink while I was driving and as I was wiping up and down the area between the two cup holders, my thumb hit the dial and I felt the truck kind of like downshift. A message appeared in the instrument cluster that said something to the effect that the gear selected was LOW. Bottom right of the message was showing the OK so I clicked on it. I looked at the dial and it was blinking on R. I thought, oh crap! I turned the knob back to D and the Maverick started running like normal again. I felt so relieved. I drove another 3 plus hours after that without a problem.
So good news! The truck does NOT slam into REVERSE if you accidentally shift to R while its running.

When you wake up tomorrow, the day resets… that’s the downshift you felt. Ford can’t recall the time-shifting eCVTs because they never get the chance to… anyone who reports it never makes it to the next day when the Ford account asks for your VIN and dealership info. You just keep looping, R, foreveR

There is no direct linkage to a transmission. It's all through the computer. The computer will not let that shift happen. For the hybrid to go in reverse the second electric motor operates in reverse. It's essentially telling you you need to stop in order to continue what you are trying to do.

Nothing wrong with it going into low as the transmission only has the planetary gear and the two motors. Low just puts your regen braking on full bore the moment you lift off the accelerator.

I've bumped it out of "gear" at 70. And a few times something heavy in my pocket fell into the L and switched it to Low but didn't affect much other than braking.

If its anything like my previous truck, a 2015 Ram 1500 with the 8 speed/Hemi combo, it will ding, flash some warning lights, call you an idiot and insult your mother but not actually shift into Reverse.

I admit to accidentally turning the shift knob when I was actually trying to turn the temp dial. It took a bit to get used to the dash mounted dial shifter.

You only make that mistake once lol

The truck will slam into reverse at very low forward speed. I’m not certain of the threshold, and don’t want to test it again......

Nice place for a shift control switch isn't it?? When I worked at a Lincoln dealership and saw the first "push button" shift switches on the dash of the MKZs years ago I thought that was bad.... I'd gladly have them there out of the way compared to these rotary shift knobs right where you spill everything.

Imagine if instead of a dial, the Maverick had something like, I dunno, a lever that couldn't be mistaken for anything else? It could be put into a different position for Park, Reverse, and Drive. You could put it in the same place as the dial, or perhaps there would be room on the steering wheel column?

Yeah I accidentally did this, if you don’t set it back to D I guess. I didn’t realize I could. So it says come to a stop, but it slammed into park at about 3 mph. Oof

I was rolling forward at about ~5 mph and my daughter's dog jumped from the back and between the front seats, scooted around and hit the shifter knob. The truck slammed to a stop and scared the pi$$ out of me until I figured out what had happened.... "R"

It mostly pisses me off but sometimes it's good our vehicles are smarter than us.

I actually have worried about this, one day i was driving and hit into N and thought I got the dreaded engine death I read about from a connection people were talking about a few months ago.

One thing I would change is the shifter, its terrifying.
