Ok, I will let my idea out and see what you guys think about it. I do not have a Mav yet, but here is what I am thinking.
Easy
just a spring loaded cover that you have to lift up to change the transmission.
Harder
a spring loaded collar that you would be pushed down as you grab the dial.

This happened today. I accidentally spilled my drink while I was driving and as I was wiping up and down the area between the two cup holders, my thumb hit the dial and I felt the truck kind of like downshift. A message appeared in the instrument cluster that said something to the effect that the gear selected was LOW. Bottom right of the message was showing the OK so I clicked on it. I looked at the dial and it was blinking on R. I thought, oh crap! I turned the knob back to D and the Maverick started running like normal again. I felt so relieved. I drove another 3 plus hours after that without a problem.
So good news! The truck does NOT slam into REVERSE if you accidentally shift to R while its running.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS, THIS IS GREAT NEWS!

Yep it this sorta happen to me. Day 2 of owning the Mav after a 16 month wait, driving down the Hwy to home the car just stopped all vibration, did not react to the gas pedal. Needless to say after hearing about all the recalls, etc. a lot was going through my mind. I was still rolling down the hwy and was able to pull into a parking lot. It turned out my son's dog had turned the dial with his paw and moved it from D to N as he stretched out in the front passenger's seat. I was surprised how easy it just moved. Well I moved the pup's paw, he put it back, twice! (he is an ole timer and a bit stubborn.)So I moved him to the back seat. Needless to say I purchased a large cup holder and placed it in the spot before the dial. I was trying to brain bash a 3D type of wall to stop this from being possible - can't wait to see what folks come up with.

Good to know. I was wondering about accidental screw ups with that thing

Nice place for a shift control switch isn't it?? When I worked at a Lincoln dealership and saw the first "push button" shift switches on the dash of the MKZs years ago I thought that was bad.... I'd gladly have them there out of the way compared to these rotary shift knobs right where you spill everything.
I had a dodge or Plymouth with push button selectors pushing one in would push the in button out. Problem was when I went to sell it 20 years later the test driving dingbat reached up and pulled the one in out by the roots. Was hell to put it back in place.

The truck is pretty cool in that the shifter isn’t mechanical but everything is electronic. I discovered you don’t need to put it into park when you park. It will put itself into park once you turn it off. The key won’t go all the way to the lock position right away. Once it goes into park, just a second, you can turn to lock and remove the key.
I imagine some programmer at Ford figured it would be a good idea to lock out reverse if the truck is going forward. Great idea!

Always glad to hear a computerized system has solid protections against their biggest predator... The driver! Haha! I'm glad someone accidentally found the answer for all of us.

This reminds me of another fellow owner who discovered shifting to neutral and shutting off the vehicle while parking downhill for ultimate efficiency results in an abrupt shift to park... Even at 10ish mph speeds! Yikes! Good to know!

Nonetheless I wanted to comment since I didn't see anyone mention that the E-CVT actually doesn't even have a reverse gear to begin with. The #2 electric motor linked to the final drive is simply driven backwards to achieve reverse. Even if it did attempt to do that, I think the result would be cooked inverter rather than shredded gears, at least if I understand it correctly. I'll be the first to admit I'm not an expert.

The E-CVT is an absolutely beautiful creation. I'm glad the engineers on the software side are (for the most part) treating it well.

Seems like a good place to ask this...is there any way to manually shift my Maverick??
Can it be shifted into a lower gear manually while going down the road??

I like your spring loaded collar idea.

I don't like the current design that spins like a roulette wheel; stopping at Park and Drive would be my preference. This would be in addition to the spring loaded collar.

Imagine if instead of a dial, the Maverick had something like, I dunno, a lever that couldn't be mistaken for anything else? It could be put into a different position for Park, Reverse, and Drive. You could put it in the same place as the dial, or perhaps there would be room on the steering wheel column?
You should patent that idea before someone steals it.

Yes, in hybrid you can push the "L" button at any speed and any mode. It will maximize Regen braking and start ice to slow down with engine braking if HVB gets to reported 72% (+/-) SOC. Appears to be good way to add juice to HVB in last 2-3 miles from home or to get up to 100% Regen capture without possibly engaging hydraulic. Is designed for downhill driving per manual but works great on flat or uphill even. If traffic allows I will use "L" to slow to make a left turn on way home from 65mph.

My Bronco Sport only had the four positions and would stop at Park and Drive. Much better than the eternal spin my Mav has. You could also put it in reverse at highway speeds to check the rear view camera and then flip it back to drive.
