Rather than using a heavier 2x4, I used a 1 inch board and wood glued a small piece of the same board at each end so it fills the same space in the slot as a 2x4. I have 3/4” more of bed space on the side with the spacers. If the glue does not hold up, I will use wood screws.

I did the same with PVC boards. I sprayed Berliner on it and used hinges to make it easy for removal and storage

I did the same thing, I used 1x10 glued and screwed end strips to take up the space and painted it flat Black. Much easier to lift out if I need the full bed than 2x6. Also added 2 cheap draw pulls on top edge to pull it out when need .

As long as we are on this subject, how many of you are cutting a custom "height" to match the top of the wheelwells, to provide support if carrying 4x8 sheets? With my bed mat in, I need a 6-1/2" tall board.

I did the same thing, I used a piece of shelfing 1'" by 10" and 2 strips of fir strip on ends to take up space its half the weight of a 2x6. A little flat black paint and a couple of cabinet handles on the ends and its a breeze to remove when I need the whole bed. I used screws and glue on the ends.

I attempted that but found it was impossible with my BAK tonneau cover. The rails require me to "swivel" the divider into place. 2"X10" is the highest I could go. Also I had to go 54 1/8" length. Made the swivelling into position easier. Could also be because of my box liner.
