I spent some time in the Ford booth at the Northeast Auto Expo today. The show itself wasn't all that much but I did get to have an interesting conversation with a Ford representative whose Ford name badge identified him as a Display Manager.

The first topic of conversation was the lack of a Maverick in the display area, since pretty much all other models were present. He told me he still can't get a Maverick for the shows unless a local dealer has a refused order on hand. So, some level of scarcity continues even at the corporate level.

The next thing we talked about was the upcoming refresh. It sounded like it's primarily a cosmetic refresh for strengthening the brand family appearance across the various truck models. However, he did seem optimistic that it could include AWD for the hybrid models. No definitive statement, of course, just an apparent optimism.

Finally, I mentioned my interest in any of the truck manufacturers producing a standard cab, longer-bed version of their small truck models. I expected him to say (as did the reps of other brands) "good luck with that". But he didn't. He told me that he gets that comment a lot and that "there's talk" about it at the corporate level. He also noted that, if such a thing were to happen, it would be unlikely to be a true standard cab and more likely to be an extended cab. He seemed to think that an extended cab version with a 5' bed is conceivable for both Maverick and Ranger. Again, it was a mostly speculative conversation but it was interesting that the idea wasn't met with immediate rejection. Hope springs eternal.

In the recent spy photos, it looks like the headlights have been moved to the top of the housing by the bottom of the hood, rather than the bottom of the housing near the bumper. I think I saw a projector also.

Spy photos seem to indicate the next Maverick will have 360 cameras on the top trim.

I just want to know who came up with the idea for the vinyls they wrap on while they are testing lol.

Little images of skiers, sufers, skaters, hikers...

Not conspicuous at all either.

An extended cab Maverick would be nice, but if I'm giving up a usable back seat I'd want more than 6 additional inches of bed length.

The current double-cab configuration would be perfect if I had a mid-gate that let me carry longer loads on occasion.

I think Ford hit it right on design. No reason for different cab options or bed lengths. Niche market was hit. Maybe a different manufacturer will come out with a single cab long bed. I'm sure they would shut it down after a year. No way would it get the following the Maverick has at its current design.

True, but it hides most redesigns fairly well if done right. Paparazzi sit outside these plants and wait for testings to be done anyways, so anything they do will get reported and stand out like a sore thumb.

If Ford can't build all the Maverick orders it has now, there is little point for more model options.
If they can catch up and dealers have plenty of stock no more long waits for orders, then we may see more options.

Like TOMCATFIGHTER said in his comment, I think Ford hit it on the design of the Maverick. There's no reason to make a drastic change. They should pull a Toyota and keep the design for the next ten-fifteen years before doing a drastic overhaul. Definitely add some features/mid-cycle refreshes along the way of course. But overall, keep the basic design. That's one of the many reasons I chose this over the Hyundai Santa Cruz because it looks like a truck. Clean and not over styled.

Side note, for the upcoming refresh, I just hope they don't give it a massive, gaping grille like most manufacturers are gearing towards. Don't pull a BMW or Lexus on us Ford! Keep the refresh simple!

Consider how many of the old Rangers were sold with an extended cab or standard cab. There's a market there, but I agree it's not the primary market.

As a retiree whose kids are off on their own, I'd rather have more bed length than a perpetually empty back seat.

Jeep did a concept of this configuration based on the JL platform but never put it in production in spite of vocal demand from the Jeep community. Had they done so, I'd be driving one today because they would have beat Ford to the market. But there's no way I'd buy a Gladiator.

I remedied the lack of need for a backseat somewhat by removing the backseat (well, the bottom part) and putting in a plywood floor. I wish those bins with frame pieces weren't in the way, though. :( Definitely would consider an extended or standard cab version if one is released and has a shorter overall length. Maneuverability and tight turning radius are priorities.

Got mine in 4 months ... and the dealership has 10 Mavericks and a boatload of Broncos on the lot. I think they're caught up ... except for maybe the fleet XL versions.
