Do y'all remember vans? The original stealth campers.

Here’s my little 1-person micro camper—just enough space for me, my bike, and a bit of gear. This version’s kind of a prototype since it ended up heavier than I’d like, but I’m still pulling 35 mpg with the Hybrid Maverick.

The interior’s not finished yet. I built it mostly from leftover materials from a camper van project, and down the road I’ll build a lighter, more dialed-in version.

For now, it’s perfect for stealth solo camping and quick road trips!

Weight may not be the biggest reason for the minimal reduction in fuel mileage, could be the aerodynamics more than weight. Higher speeds and any aero disruption (dirty air) makes it worse.

Was thinking the same but that is still better mpg than most cars/trucks. I WOULD like a simple lower profile popup foamie version of this, maybe even a kammback for air flow

definitely aerodynamics.

he has no backup camera, no bed. I am mystified as to why is this a better solution than just sleeping in the back of any hybrid midsize suv, or obviously there are many compact trailers that offer better comfort and the truck is still a truck especially when not towing.

I have an "Origami kammback to hightop topper" project in scale model development stages. I wasn't really thinking of it as a camper, but it goes about as high as a truck tent, and you could get "squatting on crates" seating height at the tall end.

Sticking point now is that I ended up with a trifold tonneau so there's not much justifying proceeding to full scale this year. (As far as wifey would see it, next year I might have the "mad money" replenished and do it. )

Well... I have a Maverick—not an SUV. The camper comes on and off in about 15 minutes, so the truck is still a truck 90% of the time. I wanted something I could customize—add shelves, hang hooks, maybe even install a heater—without worrying about wrecking the interior like I would in an SUV. I also didn’t want the hassle of towing a camper just for solo bike trips. Once the inside’s finished, I think I’ll sleep just fine—and that was the real goal. I just can’t get decent sleep in a tent.

Hahaha! I thought about getting locked in by some jokester. The "skylight" opens up so I could crawl out in an emergency.
It could totally be made lighter. 2" foam board with PMF? But, I like being able to screw things into the side. Or maybe an aluminum frame like you mentioned? I'm thinking of this one as my "proof of concept". Work all the bugs out before I make a financial investment on a better one.
Use these to screw into "PVC cardboard style panels. Or 5mm underlayment sandwiching 1/2" foam board. Etc.

It's 90% the aero drag and 10% about the weight. Ask me how I know.

There's a guy near me living in a dog catcher truck. That's stealth.

Not his. Just a stock photo. But one like this dude gets to camp anywhere he wants but pretty sure that's all he owns too so kind of sad.
