Since XLT Hybrid no Lux or 360, has warned me of turning cars it's confused by when I don't brake, here's what the manual says. on these systems.
Not optional - sounds like they all get them now.
Good to know since I'm sure this feels different and no good way to test it like ABS in snow.

WHAT IS PRE-COLLISION ASSIST

Pre-collision assist detects and warns of approaching hazards in the roadway. If your vehicle is rapidly approaching another stationary vehicle, a vehicle traveling in the same direction as yours, or a pedestrian within your driving path, the system provides multiple levels of assistance to help avoid a collision.

HOW DOES PRE-COLLISION ASSIST WORK

The system warns the driver of potential hazards by providing three levels of assistance.

If your vehicle is rapidly approaching potential hazards, the system provides the following levels of functionality:

1. Alert.
2. Brake Support.
3. Automatic Emergency Braking.

Alert: When active, a flashing visual warning appears and an audible warning tone sounds.
Brake Support: The system is designed to help reduce the impact speed by preparing the brakes for rapid braking. The system does not automatically apply the brakes. If you press the brake pedal, the system could apply additional braking up to maximum braking force, even if you lightly press the brake pedal.
Automatic Emergency Braking: This may activate if the system determines that a collision is imminent.
Note: If you perceive the pre-collision assist alerts as being too frequent or disturbing, then you can reduce the alert sensitivity. Setting the low sensitivity would result in fewer and later warnings of a potential forward collision. The manufacturer recommends using the high sensitivity setting where possible.
Note: Automatic emergency braking performance is not affected by the sensitivity setting.
Each system has various levels of detection capabilities. See Pre-Collision Assist Limitations.

WHAT IS AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING

Automatic emergency braking may activate if the system determines that a collision is imminent. The system may help to reduce impact damage or completely avoid the crash.

SWITCHING AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING ON AND OFF

To switch the system on or off, use the instrument cluster display:

1. Select Settings.
2. Select Driver Assistance.
3. Select Pre-Collision Assist.
4. Switch Active braking on or off.

WHAT IS EVASIVE STEERING ASSIST

If your vehicle is rapidly approaching a road user, evasive steering assist helps you steer around the road user.
After you turn the steering wheel in an attempt to avoid a crash with the road user, the system applies additional steering torque to help you steer around the road user. After you pass the road user, the system applies steering torque when you turn the steering wheel to steer back into the lane. The system deactivates after you fully pass the road user.
Note: Road users are defined as another stationary vehicle in the same lane, a vehicle traveling in the same lane in the same direction as yours, a cyclist traveling in the same direction as yours or a pedestrian within your driving path. See Pre-Collision Assist Precautions.

PRE-COLLISION ASSIST PRECAUTIONS

WARNING: You are responsible for controlling your vehicle at all times. The system is designed to be an aid and does not relieve you of your responsibility to drive with due care and attention. Failure to follow this instruction could result in the loss of control of your vehicle, personal injury or death. WARNING: The system does not detect vehicles moving in a different direction or animals. Apply the brakes when necessary. Failure to follow this instruction could result in the loss of control of your vehicle, personal injury or death. WARNING: The system does not operate during hard acceleration or steering. Failure to take care may lead to a crash or personal injury. WARNING: The system may operate with reduced function during cold and inclement weather conditions. Snow, ice, rain, spray and fog can adversely affect the system. Keep the front camera and radar free of snow and ice. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the loss of control of your vehicle, serious personal injury or death. WARNING: Take additional care if your vehicle is heavily loaded or you are towing a trailer. These conditions could result in reduced performance of this system. Failure to follow this instruction could result in the loss of control of your vehicle, personal injury or death. WARNING: The system may not function properly if your vehicle is fitted with a replacement windshield not approved by us. WARNING: Do not perform windshield repairs around the rear-view mirror. Failure to take care may result in the loss of control of your vehicle, serious personal injury or death.

Note: Automatic emergency braking may activate when a collision is imminent. The system cannot prevent all crashes, but may reduce crash severity. Do not test automatic emergency braking or forward collision warning. Testing this system must only be conducted by authorized test facilities using specialized equipment. Do not use automatic emergency braking to replace normal braking for any reason. Relying on automatic emergency braking to stop your vehicle may cause an unexpected accident which could lead to serious injury or death.

PRE-COLLISION ASSIST LIMITATIONS

Pre-collision assist depends on the detection ability of its camera and sensors. Any obstructions or damage to these areas can limit detection or prevent the system from functioning. See Locating the Pre-Collision Assist Sensors.
The system is active at 3 mph (5 km/h) and above.
Note: Brake support and automatic emergency braking are active at speeds up to 75 mph (120 km/h). If your vehicle has a radar sensor included with adaptive cruise control, then brake support and automatic emergency braking are active up to the maximum speed of the vehicle.
Pedestrian Detection Limitations
Pedestrian detection is active at speeds up to 50 mph (80 km/h).
Pedestrian detection operates optimally when detected hazards are clearly identifiable. System performance may reduce in situations where pedestrians are running, partly obscured, have a complex background, or cannot be distinguished from a group.

All this talk about brake assist and pre collision is fine at moderate speeds however it cannot overpower the forces of physics. If excessive speed was involved then the risk of collision is almost certain. However there are very few details from the news media at this time what might have caused this accident or who was at fault. In any case it was a tragedy an individual lost there life.

I see XLT wheels on that Maverick which leads me to believe it did not have Adaptive Cruise Control and it may or may not have copilot 360.

If it doesn't have CP360, no automatic emergency braking (AEB).

if it has CP360 but not ACC, it only uses the forward facing camera (that's also used for lane keeping assist) and it needs visual cues to trigger AEB. it can trigger on vehicles or pedestrians.

if it has CP360 and ACC, it would use radar and the forward facing camera both to use visual cues and radar distance & approach speed to trigger AEB.

AEB can be disabled in the driver's instrument panel menu.

My ‘23 XL does not have Copilot 360 and I assure you it does have AEB.

I have it set to “high” and I’ve had no phantom braking but it did alert (a startling buzzer and the dash display turned red) twice. Both times when side street traffic simultaneous with an oncoming left turn, both vehicles had intruded some into my lane, and left me in a thread the needle kind of situation.

You are right about the base XL being camera only with no radar.

Absolutely, we avoid I-35 like the plague when going to SA.
I-10 isn’t much better if any better.

I am very confused about the capabilities of different trim models. I have an XL with cp360, it definitely has assist, where it flashes red, but I don’t think it has auto emergency braking. I’ve tested it out by playing chicken with stopped cars before and it never brakes, I always give in last second and slam on my brakes myself.. I definitly don’t have ACC and I think the system needs ACC to be able to emergency brake and emergency swerve maneuver. Is this true ?

I'm sorry to whoever this was who lost their life. Whatever led to the crash, be it a medical or mechanical issue, distracted or impaired driving, it doesn't really matter. All that does, is that someone lost their life. I'm truly sorry about that. Travel on fellow maverick owner, onto hopefully better and brighter things.

One last thing, if you’ve driven the highways in South Texas you will notice that speed limit signs are mostly ignored. Traffic enforcement is stretched thin and the speeds people travel is crazy sometimes.
State troopers are not as common because of their assignments in the far south of the state.

Same here in CA. Those limits are for other drivers is the mindset. It's this flagrant violation that starts legislators to consider speed governors. Apparently, it never occurred to them that reducing law enforcement would have consequences.

No, regarding AEB.
Depends on what you mean by emergency swerve - it ain't doing it for ya. Not yet.

Actually - a big cardboard box in a parking lot going 5 mph should work - car height.
Confirm that option is not disabled.
