The amount of cracked windshields is absurd.

Ive been driving 25 years and in the 2 years I’ve had my maverick I’ve had more windshield cracks then the previous 23 years. I’m on my 2nd windshield but the first one had 2 repairs before I replaced it. I finally had to replace it because I got another crack on a road trip and couldn’t get it repaired in time before it spread. Now on my 2nd windshield I have 2 repairs which luckily I was able to repair before they spread.
I even bought the hood deflector which hasn’t done anything to help.
What is it about this vehicle that attracts rocks?
I feel the same about the windshield. 4 chips and replacement in 5 months. Drove a Lincoln for 4 years not one chip. They are building these Mavericks and cheap as possible and convinced they are installing cheaper things windshields than on more expensive trucks and cars. Same thing with the paint it is thin coat and chips are numerous on my Cheaply made Maverick

You need to distinguish between design affecting probability of a crack/chip and bad luck. Unfortunately, a sample size of two cracked windshields is way too small to draw any inference.
While I’ve “only” had to replace my windshield twice the first one had 3 repaired chips and my current one has 2 repaired chips. My 200,000 mile Corolla had one chip since I bought it.
I am gonna go with design over bad luck.

I had my windshield replaced @4k, (ford glass) now at 13k and I've had 2 chips repaired. I've also noticed the glass is looking badly etched already in bright sunlight. I had a Jetta from FL with 250k, and the windshield was about the same. In over 30 years of driving, I've had one other chip repair. The sandblasted look is what is really upsetting. At this rate it will look frosted by the time I hit 60k. I fully believe there was at least a production run of bad glass. It's the same angle and height as any other SUV around, and I've got 3 smart cars in the shop now all with steeper glass lower to the ground and none of them have ever been replaced, chip repaired or look like they've been sandblasted.

What kind of heat did you have.
Were you hotter than 120°?
And we weren't as hot as Phoenix
There is still some ventilation at the top where it goes around the mirror.

I also believe that your sun shade is a material that you can twist down into a circle as pictured for storage? It's purpose is to block the UV rays. The material will breathe.
I realize you're trying to justify the crack in your windshield due to the sun shade. But, I don't think it had anything to do with it.
Windshield mounting is different than it was in the old days where there was a big black rubber gasket.
Today's windshield adhesives do Flex to compensate for expansion and contraction of the glass.
If you're looking for a professional opinion stop at Safelite or an auto glass business and ask an installer for their opinion.
I would think that the reflection of the infra red light causing the heat would prevent the build up of heat by being absorbed? In any case consider getting clear (or less than 5%) ceramic tint with 99+% infra red reflection. About $100-$140.

It's industry wide, not just Ford. I order 10x the glass now than I used to 10 years ago. Worst place for the manufacturers to try and save vehicle weight. You can really tell when you get a glass for a newer car over an older one. About a 10-15 pound difference.

...tangental to this, XL and XLT owners might consider requesting the acoustic windshield used in the Lariat when replacing their windshield.

[Lariat owners might want to confirm that the shop will replace a cracked acoustic windshield with a like item and not cheap out on a single layer version.]

I'm not saying this b/c it will survive rocks any better, but because it does offer reduced noise.

If you replace your windshield using insurance, you may need to pay the upcharge if you request the acoustic glass.

I have had insurance replace my windshield when the etching glare restricts safe vision. In Texas usually happens in 6 to 8 years.
Edit to add: I have noticed in my maverick very late in day driving into Sun it appears that very fine dust or dandruff in the textured dash can be reflected in the windshield just like a mirror. Place something on dash to check this possibility. I had VA dermatologist prescribe medicated shampoo.

Why?
I would never invest $100-$140 in a windshield that already has a chip that Safelite filled.
I've used the folding silver windshield shades for over 30 years out here in the desert never had a windshield crack from one. It's so dusty most of the time, the windows are rolled up tight. It can get to 150° inside the truck around 4-5 pm.

To help with the maximum temp gain. I had ceramic tint with IR 99+% installed on all windows except windshield in August and noticed I ran MAX cool for less time without silver veil, It did not feel as hot but I did not measure. Instead of getting silver shade out I will park with windshield facing away from sun or put silver shade up. In Texas it's only necessary for 10-14 weeks. As far as justification of $100 expense since I'm an old guy who learned $$$ value at $0.75/hr, I pull a $100 bill out, call it a $20 and base my decision on that. When I started work I was planning on SS being about $180-$200/month and it's over 12x that but I still need some of my 401 MRD. Also I am not worried about a repaired crack maybe because I've never had one fail but am concerned more about the next rock, pig, deer, etc.

I only had one and it was a bar fight that I won. Don’t body slam anyone into the windshield as it won’t hold up.
You threw a person onto your windshield in a bar fight? 1) How old was this person and what were they doing in a bar? 2) What was your Maverick doing in a bar?

I have driven my Maverick for almost 3 years and no cracks in my windshield!
Just jinxed yourself with that statement ;)

I've had 1 replacement and 2 fixes to my 24. I haven't been following dump trucks and have tried to avoid trucks with big tires. Always happens on the freeway and seems to come from a fair distance (not always the car/truck directly in front of me).

I notice twice in 30k miles my front tire has thrown a small rock forward which was caught by the wind before touching pavement and curved upwards and I drove right into them. Maybe a vote for a larger air dam in front of front wheels.
🤓 Thank you, I needed a good laugh this morning.
