So, I was cleaning the Mav up, and you know how water gets in the fuel door all the time, so I usually blow that out with a leaf blower. I press the fuel door button and I get this message ...

Please wait for the fuel door to open....

and then it never does open. I try it multiple times. Some with holding the button the whole time, some with just a push. I decide to turn the Mav on and off and on again, and sit in the vehicle like I just pulled up to the pump. It finally opened. Now I'm wondering what is the backup plan if the door doesn't open?

I can just imagine pulling up to the pump and not being able to open the door. Something else to ask my dealer about next time.

Why is an automatic fuel door even needed? Is it really that hard to pop it out manually? Just more stuff to break.
The hybrid has a pressurized tank. Pushing the button in the cab allows some time for it to release the pressure by the time you get back to the filler location so that you don't spray yourself with gas. In theory.

The Ecoboost does not have a pressurized gas tank.

I had the auto open one and loved it, but IIRC it can't be pushed in to open like the ones on the EB's, right? Strange that it's only one or the other with this design. There has to be a better way. Also, if you so much as look at mine wrong, it'll pop open lol. It's a tactic.

I've noticed mine sticking lately too. It opens, but it doesn't pop all the way up on my 2023 XLT Hybrid. I'm starting to wonder if the plastic is deteriorating or if dirt is affecting the mechanism. I bought a replacement for the factory one but haven't installed it yet. I'll probably wait until it stops opening altogether before I make the switch, haha.

You have to wait for the pressure inside the fuel tank to be released. You don't want a gas fume phardt contaminating the world.

Hybrid vehicles have pressurized fuel tanks, because their internal combustion engines put a lot of pressure on the fuel system. This pressure is necessary for the fuel system to function properly.
Hybrids also have bladder fuel tanks, which are smaller than regular tanks and expand and contract as fuel is added or removed. This design reduces the amount of room for fuel to evaporate and the amount of vapor emissions released into the air.
Another reason hybrids may pressurize their fuel tanks is to keep vapor from filling the charcoal canister when the engine is not running. Without the engine running, the vapor can't be purged, so the pressure inside the tank is increased to prevent it from filling.

My Chevy Volt had a button to depressurize the tank and release the gas flap.

Our 2011 Prius had a warning in the owner's manual not to run the tank [bladder] empty. The bladder collapses as fuel is used and an empty bladder required air pressure to expand the collasped bladder. Otherwise you couldn't get fuel in.

Does the Mav hybrid tank/bladder have the same characteristics?

Great bit of knowledge! You should change your handle to Encyclopedia Glen. I say that in admiration and gratitude.

Thank you.
I had no idea, why hybrids had pressurized gas tanks. I had one my Volt and now my Maverick. I decided to find out why.
It is all research. I love research.
The side benefit is that I learn new stuff or even old stuff that has been updated.

Take care,
GB
