So how do we think the Hybrid 2025 Maverick is going to do towing 4k lbs?

It's got plenty of torque. I wouldn't worry about towing 4K, I'd worry about stopping it.

Should be fine. The only reason it couldn't do it before was the same reason the FWD Ecoboost couldn't.

Torque is for getting rolling.
The hybrid has more than enough torque at low speeds.

Horsepower is for accelerating.
The hybrid battery pack will provide the HP boost here.

You'll need only 100 - 120 HP towing up the steepest interstates in the country, and 50-60 HP towing over flat terrain and the gas engine has it.

The Ford pricing site says this is what is included in the 4K package

Ford Maverick So how do we think the Hybrid 2025 Maverick is going to do towing 4k lbs? 1722526783584-tx

Notice it says the EB gets the higher capacity radiator.
But that implies the 4K Hybrid will get:
  • transmission fluid cooler
  • upgraded radiator fan

The standard hybrid (probably all hybrids) require 16.3 quarts of coolant in total. 11.6 just for the engine.

The EcoBoost requires 9.2 quarts of coolant.

I 'think' past models of 4k EcoBoosts took 9.5 quarts of coolant. But I'm not 100% sure. Going off memory.

Edit: Ford Service Dept. Website (dated 2022) said:

2.0 EcoBoost 8.7 quarts
2.0 EcoBoost 9.2 quarts with tow package

🤷🏻‍♂️

Anyone have solid info on if there is a different coolant capacity between 2k and 4k EB? There probably will be no difference in the Hybrids, which have separate loops for engine and electronics. But yet to be seen.

flat ground going 65 and under, no problem.

I would bet that it can't do hold 65 going up 7% grade at high altitude. but how many people tow 4k in those conditions?

YTers will definitely be testing this. look for those videos over the coming months. Might as well order now, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain in terms of getting one with a reasonable wait time.

The horsepower numbers Real Mavrick's has measured with a ScanGauge seem in the right ballpark. But speed and the trailer's aerodynamics are big factors.

We can calculate that it takes 64 HP at the wheels to move 8000 lbs (truck and trailer) up a 5% grade at 60 mph without wind or rolling resistance. This is close to the difference between his level ground and hill HP numbers although we don’t know his speed.

So using the 120 HP number, that is 74% of the Hybrid’s engine 162 HP capacity ( on long hills the battery will not help ). So it’s getting up there in the engine capacity.

I have not seen a HP curve for the 2.5 engine but we can calculate from the max torque spec that it puts out 118 HP at the engine at 4000 RPMs. There will be some small losses between the engine and the wheels.

This means you would be running 4000+ RPMs up hills at highway speeds.

For some people this is very annoying and they would rather either slow down or just go to an 4K EB.

The actual highway speed you want to go is very important because the aerodynamic drag goes up with the cube ( ^3 ) of the speed. So it takes twice as much HP to overcome the aerodynamic drag at 63 mph as it does at 50 mph.

Thoughts?
It will tow it like crap. It barley tows 2k pounds without issue. It vastly struggles with little trailers. Doubling the weight will be worse.

I'm sorry you got a sad little Maverick.

I've towed with mine in the most demanding conditions North America can throw at it and I have been nothing but impressed.

Maybe your expectations are abnormally high.

It's also about knowing what you have, and how to use it.

If you have limited gasoline, and are in the middle of a desert, are you going to drive 80 mph to try and get out of the desert quickly because it's getting hot outside, but risk running short?

Or do you drive at 45 mph and guarantee, short of meteor strike, you make it out of the desert alive?

I tow not quite 4k over the Rockies with a FWD 2022 Hybrid at 45 mph and make it every time with no stress, no fuss. Then get 53 MPG the rest of the time while not towing. Hard to beat this arrangement with a single vehicle.

People who say "The Maverick is not the greatest tow vehicle" are right and wrong at the same time.

It all depends on your perspective.
