What if the light does absolutely nothing but make you feel like it is in eco
Then the truck's driving characteristics wouldn't change. But they do, most noticeably with regenerative braking when letting up on the accelerator.

I've noticed now that I've ECO and SPORT my Auto start/stop NEVER stops the engine. So maybe that's the way to disable it.
See manual page 170. Emissions control and fuel saving requires engine. There is a list of things that can require engine to stay on. Max heat or max cool or defrost on. Driver's door is open. I think sport requires engine on among other things to provide enhanced braking. In any drive mode with the Low button pushed the engine will stay on for braking assistance. If HVB is above a certain SOS (I believe 70-75%) engine will stay on to allow for adequate braking which could include engine braking since Regen braking is reduced because the high amperage would heat the HVB too much. Good mpg requires running engine when needed and off as much as possible.

Apparently, you need to add a set of timers to get the Maverick drive mode to start in anything other than normal mode. There are a few different references I have found about this and some YouTube videos that all say the same thing. The one common theme is that the drive mode will only default to normal mode and it is only overridden with an external timing circuit.
Yep, and the relay/switch makes an audible "click" when done unfortunately.

Hey, that could be a plus = An audible "DoinK" everytime it "pushes" the button. I want it mounted in the dash cubby with a drive mode selector knob which could be set to the mode the driver wants the truck to wind up in.

The one I have seen requires that it be installed under the center console - spliced in. I will look for the video I found on it.

NOT ForScan but rather a hardware work-around:

It could be reproduced with solid state components. For something off the shelf I think two of these could replace having the different sequencer/delay modules, but sounds like they're kind of fiddly to setup.

It's been a few months-- has there been any movement on default drive mode selection? Or is hardware modification still the only option at this point?

Yeah, I was surprised one day when I first used the ECO. I know the power was cut, and you needed to push the gas pedal more to accelerate, but the biggest surprise was the Regen brakes. I've been used to the strong regen on my wife's BEV, and to my surprise, the ECO has a lot stronger regen at a higher speed than the Normal mode. At low speeds, they seem to be the same.

The less sensitive gas pedal is a good thing when trying to maximize the use of the battery-only range. Combined with the EV coach, I can ride the pedal more toward full battery output without worrying about accidentally going into hybrid mode. And it can still speed up if you really step on it in ECO mode.

This is frequently requested and often discussed. Alas, the answer is no. There isn't a way to set a default drive mode.
Sadly my wifes Escape will default to Eco
